Red Letter Media |OT| of Movies, Murderers, and Pizza Rolls

100%.

There's a very well done video on youtube that's an analysis of the editing done in Suicide Squad and went into a lot of detail about how the terrible editing contributed hugely to how awful that movie is.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDclQowcE9I

The main focus on Suicide Squad starts at around the 7:25 mark in the video. He starts off talking about other movies and SS's trouble development beforehand.

Thanks.

That shit was pretty annoying. At this point I just regret contributing to the inevitable circlejerk those threads wind up in.

Also, Ron Paul 2012.

Aiii

So not worth it
I've never been this happy a thread I've made was locked. Geez Louise what a pile of steaming crap, it didn't even break new ground either.

Don't get the people in that thread at all. If you find RLMs output unfunny or offensive, don't support them by watching them. It's better to use your energy to support the people you like instead of opposing the people you dislike.

Anyway, can't wait for the review.

If anything we should've gotten them to hatewatch the Plinkett review. RLM gets more ad revenue, and everybody wins.

Intentional on RLM's part or not, they're probably going to get a slight bump in the initial engagement of tomorrow's video due to the visibility the haters generated. Such is the way of the internet.

Mr. Plinkett lives in Camden, NJ. lol

According to the internet, Plinkett said in his Star Trek the Star Trek review that a certain bothersome police officer from Teaneck NJ was looking to try and collect evidence to try and put together a case against him (although Plinkett was confident that he's never left enough evidence for a case to stick), and then in his Revenge of the Sith review he said that he experienced an uncontrollable fecal release in a theater in Teaneck NJ, and that they were very cool about it (when he apologized, they thought he was apologizing for RotS).

He also spends a lot of time in Atlantic City NJ (at one point listing the casino as his mailing address), where his great granddaughter works as a stripper, and where he met one of his murdered wives (a waitress).

One person complained about that joke that Spiderman Homecoming had "more diversity then a college advertisement". How is that evidence of some sort of ulterior right-wing motive? I mean, multiple characters who are traditionally white in Spiderman comics and movies were cast to PoC (NOT a bad thing), it'd be weird if they didn't comment on that.

Being the guy who wrote that, I don't see any argument for why it's valid criticism of them to even bring it up as a sardonic joke.

The joke was "look, extreme diversity in a movie". I don't see anything insightful, satirical or altruistic about this sentiment.

I'm gonna quote myself again, as a disclaimer:
I'm a huge fan of them. I donate 15$ on Patreon a month, as well listen to their stuff when falling asleep, but they've definitely dabbled and dog whistled with the alt right crowd recently.

To summarize:
- I watch/listen to their stuff every day.
- I've watched every Pre-Rec stream.
- I've donated 15$ per month to them ever since they started on Patreon.
- I've bought Gorilla Interrupted, RLM Archive, Feeding Frenzy, Space Cop and one t-shirt.
- I've written several emails to them, detailing how their content has helped me through so many tough periods in my life.

And this is why, I find it so disheartening to see them with increasing frequency, make flippant and possibly destructive comments about diversity and progressivism.

I don't agree with most of the dissenters in the thread, in that I don't take everything offensive or "problematic" that they bring up at face value. But it saddens me, to hear them name drop "virtue signalling" and downplaying how awesome it is that girls now have a female superhero to look up to, as it just comes off as regressive, pointless cynicism with no benefits.

I don't expect the world of them, but they've held up such a fantastic standard for years, so seeing them change without being able to critique them without being bombarded by their fans, is making me less and less of a fan.

So please, before all of you continue writing "OT is just crazy", please take a moment to listen to someone like me, who's been a fanatic of them for years, and try to see it from my point of view. That there is some validity in criticizing them for some of the stuff they've recently done.

Thank you.

This is like the first time in my life i was sitting here waiting for a review to drop like some big announcement.

I feel like its gonna break new ground.

They had rape jokes, suicide jokes and all sorts of edgy jokes in old HiTB, so why did you let those slide until now?

i'm not saying it's ok, but i'm saying maybe you changed and want them to adapt to what you now believe in, and you're wrongfully thinking they suddenly changed

Context is everything.

Jokes involving rape =/= thinking rape is funny.

Their humor has always been self deprecating and at the expense of themselves. Their jokes are usually akin to Louis CK's jokes, where the punch-line is "I'm so horrible that I'm actually making this joke".

The examples I've seen recently, have not been at the expense of themselves. They were "Lol, diversity", "Lol, progressivism" or "Lol, being sensitive to certain things (completely missing that different groups of people will react differently)".

I still laugh like hell watching the Plinkett reviews, with some of my most favorite jokes being the most offensive ones.

I guess we just don't get the same vibe from those "lol diversity" jokes, that's alright

This is pretty much my point. I think the first joke in the Phantom Menace Plinkett review is about suicide, so I kind of had a pretty good idea what to expect after that.

Why were jokes about abusing the elderly, rape, gay panic, suicide, etc. not only acceptable to you but clearly something you enjoyed, however the subjects they have joked about in a couple of reviews lately are something you believe should untouchable?

I still feel that the their critique isn't about inclusive/progressiveness but the studio commodification of it. To them the Ghostbusters/Wonder Woman marketing reads the same as that Pepsi Police commercial because they have a way more cynical view of Hollywood than most. There might be some tone deafness that comes off as dismissing the genuine reactions of marginalized people but I they have never been actively malicious.

The review hasn't even come out yet and people are hating on it already.

You can't accept certain types of jokes and find others offensive.

i agree that there's that element of it. rich said in a stream that he thinks the argument is false, and that we have to rebuild the glass ceiling in order to break through it again (okay asshole). it got worse though when he later said something to the effect of, does that mean we need to stop getting spider-man films so we can have more films with female superheroes?

to jack's credit, he called rich out on the spot and said it was dumb. rich had no response. jack also said that hey, maybe people don't think the glass ceiling's been broken yet, which is why people see it as a big deal. this dude's the dad of a couple of girls. he's probably one of the more progressive ones of the group due to how that would shape his worldview.

if anything though, the problem i see with rlm is that they have a pretty big level of influence now and i don't think they're acting responsibly with it. if they want to take gb:atc apart on the merits of being a film, and maybe how the studio structure, the chasing for a movie universe affects that, how reboots work in general - fine. but it's the same deal that james rolfe faced a year ago. the work/opinion is going to be co-opted by pretty nasty groups. why give them a louder voice?

I don't agree that's the punchline or a fair explanation for an offensive Louis joke.

I think what basically allows Louis to say what he has to say is there's an understanding between him and the audience that he doesn't ultimately think rape is funny in the real world, so even if the joke is about rape, and one that I subjectively don't believe is funny I know Louis isn't personally advocating for rape or whatever. This holds for jokes about progressive issues as well. If Louis imitates a gay man acting weird, it can be funny without him or the audience being personally invested in it, the joke is in the clever way he presents it or his crafty imitation.

Same principle I think applies for RLM. If you watch RLM that much, even if they haven't reached perfect progressivism I think it's a stretch to say they have a real problem with the diversity in Spiderman, the joke is the comparison with college advertisements and maybe with Spiderman not being the place you'd find the most diversity, and even if you don't find it funny it doesn't necessarily mean they have a problem with the diversity.

FYI Jack only has 2 sons

I remember gaffers saying james rolfe was sexist because he didn't think the ghostbusters reboot looked very good and wasn't going to watch it and thats all he had to say on the matter

so if you think its some sort of 'personal thing' because rlm keeps covering it, the same people shitting on them in that thread were doing the same thing to him when all he said was he didnt think it looked good and didnt want to see it

God, I remember that. What an embarrassing shit show. Everything surrounding that movie's release was a shit show. Hopefully enough time's past that some people can be more open to criticism.

why Beyond? It was good.

Into Darkness is what needs to be torn apart.

edit: totally forgot he did a short one.
He also liked 2009.

In the HitB for Beyond, Mike said he wanted to do more with it, and I think there are enough people that say Beyond is the worst of the three for some breakdown of that movie to make sense.

So yeah, that thread yesterday went about as well as a fart in church
At least a mod came in and said that if you want to be part of the discussion in the thread once the video releases that you need to watch the video.

Maybe that'll stop some of the people who came in with no intention of watching any more redlettermedia to shit on the discussion. I don't mind having critical discussions but I'm sure that if Mike makes one edgy/offensive joke it'll turn into a shit show.

Which is why I'm also hoping they opt to do a serious breakdown of the issues with the movie and leave those jokes as throwaway lines.

The person with the most posts in the thread said he wasn't going to watch the review. In the end, he wrote 81 posts in a thread about an announcement trailer for something he isn't going to watch.

I don't like to point fingers, but we all know who this was.

I just finished watching the movie in preparation for the review. While it's not good, I don't see how it's more offensive than something like Jurassic World, which was downright insulting with its stupidity and made me actually angry for wasting my time. The Wiig and McCarthy characters suck and jokes fall flat most of the time, but it's not worse than other cynical reboot/nostalgia cash grabs of the past couple of years. Without the misogynistic bullshit and different casting, no one would be talking about this anymore.

Would watch a sequel with McKinnon and Hemsworth, though. <3

McKinnon was the worst part of the movie.
Once you pop...

E: I don't love the first GB movie, I'm not a fan and I don't think it's a masterpiece. It's a fine 80's comedy movie. What made it a good movie for me was the interaction between the characters. The elevator scene is probably my favorite scene of the movie and the reboot has none of that. That's really the movie's biggest fault I can think of. I really makes me think in which direction they went for the Plinkett review.
