Anthony Weiner gets 21 months in prison in sexting case

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner was sentenced Monday to 21 months in prison for sexting with a minor.

In addition to the prison term, Weiner also was sentenced to three years of supervised release.

"This is a serious crime that deserves serious punishment," Judge Denise Cote of the Southern District of New York said.

In May, Weiner, 53, pleaded guilty to one charge of transferring obscene material to a minor in federal court in Manhattan. The charges stem from communications that the former congressman had with a 15-year-old girl on social media sites between January and March 2016. Weiner is the estranged husband of Huma Abedin, Hillary Clinton's former adviser.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Prosecutors recommended a sentence of 21 to 27 months in jail, arguing Weiner's pattern of behavior "suggests a dangerous level of denial and lack of self-control warranting a meaningful incarceratory sentence." Defense attorneys asked that Weiner receive probation.

Weiner asked the teen to "engage in sexually explicit conduct via Skype and Snapchat, where her body was on display, and where she was asked to sexually perform for him," prosecutors said in a sentencing memorandum. Weiner was fully aware of the girl's age when they were communicating, prosecutors said.

So how long is he actually gonna do?

Wow. This guy was marked as a future star in the Democratic Party at one point. What a fall. And he's getting off light here, too.

Okay, what?

The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.

Prosecutors say he has a pattern of behavior that "suggests a dangerous level of denial and lack of self-control warranting a meaningful incarceratory sentence."

Prosecutors then recommend a fifth of the maximum sentence of 21 to 27 months.

What? You just did the defense a favor.

Almost two years of this man's life gone for sexting. Unbelievable.
For sending pictures of his penis to a kid? That really seems like a just punishment to you?

If he was sending pictures of his dick to my kid, I'd want to chop his straight off and put it through a meat grinder. 21 months is easy when lots of other people would get much longer.

Considering he is a 53 year old man sending sexually explicit photos to a 15 year old, yes, yes it does.

Put him under the jail for the larger implications over and above sexually harassing a minor.

I'm sure the Sessions led DOJ might give him a stint at Club Fed, though.

He was let off too light. It sends a dangerous precedent to creeps everywhere. If I was that girls father, Wiener would not have to worry about a 2 year prison sentence...

Don't forget that John Edwards was going to be a democratic Rockstar as well.

That's how screwed we are. Looking at either side of the political Spectrum, all you can see and smell is hot garbage.

Read the logs. He was soliciting hard and he knew she was 15. What a strange cause to cape lmao; if he wasn't a politician they would've thrown him under the jail, and the guys inside would have destroyed him

Are you kidding? Of course it's a just punishment. If anything, he should've gotten more time.

Pedophilia is disgusting and so is sexual harassment. But I just have a different opinion about what constitutes a reasonable punishment in this country for nonviolent crimes.

Tired of these high profile people getting slaps on the wrists. Any other person would be getting much longer, which they should.

This is gross.

He's more than old enough to know better and moreover, this isn't him unknowingly sending a dick pic to a child or even the first time he's done dumb sexting shit. This after sexting already ruined his life and he doubled down to intentionally trying to seduce at child.

It's not hard, but the sentencing here is completely unjust. We should not be putting people in state prison for electronic messages. It's bonkers.
I love the use of "electronic messages" here, as if the medium of communication has anything to do with the legality of its content.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe you’re trying to say that if this were in other countries that have a lower age limit then he would be okay....

But here we all know it’s 18. Do the crime. Do the time.

Your first sentence is directly at odds with the second.

Knowingly sending pictures of your junk to a minor is a crime and by that standard, he got an easy sentence.

There are literally cyber crimes units of police departments for this very purpose. Ever seen To Catch A Predator? "Electronic messages" aren't any less real because they're not in person.

21 months is very less. He chose to ruin his life over this which kinda suggests he needs to be kept away from the society for at least 5 + years.

He should probably write a book about how not to ruin your career and possibly life.

This guy almost had it all and managed to ruin it.

I really was expecting this post to be a clarification that you didn't know the complete facts of the story (that the dick pic recipient was under 18). I definitely didn't expect a double down.

Ewwwwwwww

Sad that he ended up self destructing like this as he actually came off quite well, initially, in that documentary on his election and subsequent downfall.

what the hell is wrong with you? This is textbook grooming (and indecent exposure too) with a minor regardless of whether its done in person or a mobile device via the internet. Seriously, wtf is wrong with you?

He was soliciting a 15-year old and knew it. He is a child predator, plain and simple. Try to imagine this from the perspective of a sophomore in high school receiving solicitations from a married 50-year old politician. It's creepy and gross and immoral and highly illegal. He got off way, way too light given the maximum sentence and his own inability to control himself.

You seem only able to see this from Wiener's vantage point. Think of what this did to the child.

The Weiner documentary from last year was really interesting (and darkly hilarious). IIRC this happened just after the doc premiered so wasn't included, would've been a really messed up post-script.

The creepiest thing is he purposely said he doesn't agree with jail sentences for non violent crimes. That means once this had progressed (and it definitely was going to) he still wouldn't agree with a jail sentence even if the police found weiner's dick halfway inside already.

Suuuuuper gross.
