Tomb Raider Review Thread!

After watching a lot of leaked gameplay footage, there's no replayability for this Tomb Raider. Having to cross a log for 5 minutes is boring the first time, Lara moaning and being in pain for a minute and then dragging yourself to the next cutscene for 5 minutes wouldn't be fun to see multiple times.

These review scores seem to be based on appreciation for this sort of game design instead of actually analyzing it.

That is exactly what I was thinking.

In Anniversary for example, you could boot up a new game and start raiding tombs within a few minutes.

To get to the 'meat' of this Raider, you'll probably have to endure a lengthy cinematic opening, crash landing on the island, hours of tutorials, cutscenes, and QTEs, etc.

Ugggghhhhhhh...

I disagree. Bar two (completely unnecessary and boring) sections where you raid Amanda's ship filled with sailors there wasn't that much shooting in the game. Most of the areas were empty or had only few enemies that you could quickly deal with. Also, the game gave you an option to decrease enemies' health bars so you could kill them more easily.

Spiders and panthers. Judging from the A:CM thread and DS3, the new bulletpoint, killing lots of humans.

PS3 version definitely looks a bit sharper. Surprising since the review copies were mostly the 360 version and the 360 gets first hands on the DLC.

You'd think the 360 is the lead platform. Guess not.

Hard to tell based on shitty YouTube quality, but the PS3 version does look a bit more defined (360 version has that extra layer of vaseline?).

Hmm this is the 360 version that i captured from my gameplay session....

In the old games (pre-Legend) combat was the appetizer and platforming/exploration/were the main plate.
In Legend combat was the main plate.
In Underworld it was a plate the same size as every other plate on the table.
In the reboot it's the whole fucking menu.

Legend had about 25% combat, and 75% exploration/puzzle-solving. It feels very much like a well-paced Tomb Raider should.

I know we're always disputing the integrity of reviews, and that aggregates don't mean that much in the face of publishers' influence, but I was actually expecting this game to come out to unfavorable reviews. And I don't mean in the way of actual scores, the text suggest that there is more to it than the expected linearity and cinematics of an Uncharted derivative. I genuinely didnt expect it to have any exploration or homages to old titles, most due to how it was advertised up until now. Which brings me to my next point: if this game ends being an excellent title when everything is said and done, but doesn't attain a meaningful commercial success due to the very distracting chain of bad PR/publicity, then I'm going to be a sad panda. I *really* hate it when pubs/devs run their mouths stupidly, and shit their own beds.

As a longtime Tomb Raider fan, I've really been looking forward to this reboot. The reviews seem to be almost unanimously positive so far, I'm happy to see how the game ended up and can't wait for my copy to come.

Yeah, CVG's videos are the worst source of comparison, its like they're running their 360's with the wrong gamma setup. Look at all the overblown whites.

They posted a dead space 3 comparison video, that too had a notable color difference between the PS3 and 360 version. The DF comparison showed that the two games are very identical, a match for match in just about every aspect.

Have a question. Is this game good because it's like Uncharted or it's like the old Tomb Raider? The answer is vital to my purchase. I rather Uncharted stay in Uncharted, and the third one was okay.

From reading the reviews, the truth seems to be that it's somewhere in between.

Hm, well I guess we'll see. Will now rent though and buy if it's good.

well not really...yet

It looks like there using component cables for the 360 version. I dont think CVG using HDMI for the ps3 anyway dues to HDCP unless they have a stripper, so you cant really compare them like for like as there using 2 different connection types

So far Machinima has had the most fair and balanced review I've seen. He goes over the positives and negatives:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWQMMlCCEuU&list=PLZLTS4u9M_2rPFsdbdY7xL8oAApgU0Zar&index=1

That was a pretty good review, the complaints and problems they had lined up with the score they gave and they didn't just pass over on them, are all of their reviews like this? Seems like a good place to go.

The funny thing is that to most 6/10 to most seems bad, but telling someone 3 out of 5 stars and they will think it is good, the scale to which games are reviewed are really all over the place in gaming, and it doesn't help when places like IGN use a ten point scale with decimals.

That is a pretty obvious difference, that can't be right, right? Also, I still think her face looks weird, it must be the eyes, they look off on the rest of her face, maybe it is her make up or something.

She's waitin for you Goddy...

We can be lonely together dude.

It was amusing when they announced her, she had only just come off californication where she had been walking around butt naked and having sex, I had wondered at the time if they were waiting for her to be off it before they announced her as the VO.

I wouldn't trust the actual scores to these reviews. Actually read or watch them. I'm betting SE told them to give it a certain score to keep the metacritic up or else they can't publish their review until after release. Hence why a few sites didn't bother and don't have reviews up and said it was because of square's "terms".

I wouldn't put too much faith in it. Wait for the DF.

Which one or ones?

I know TotalBiscuit was sent a review copy, but refuses to review the game until the PC version. That's his personal choice, though, nothing to do with Square.

Random unsubstantiated speculation is pretty useless.

For example, I could say "I"m betting you work for Naughty Dog and just came in this thread to create speculation out of jealousy." Totally useless, unsubstantiated claim, but it is no different than what you are doing.

I think you're right.Underworld and Anniversary are the only TR i have played through only once so i could be mistaken. It's just that the ship shootouts are the first thing that comes to mind when i think about the combat in that game.

Legend had about 25% combat, and 75% exploration/puzzle-solving. It feels very much like a well-paced Tomb Raider should.

Not even close.Legend is by far the shortest TR game and the ratio of combat for the size of that game is extremely high.
Bolivia,Peru,Japan and Kazakhstan were all filled with human enemies.

Doesn't that show exist just to get nude scenes from fresh faces?

Yeah but you have to admit, even if you like both, which I do, there are far fewer games with the pacing of the Edios or even the original Crystal D Tomb Raider games. They were much quieter, more contemplative where you spent lots of times wandering around giant caverns and observing multi-room spanning puzzles. I enjoyed that pacing. It seems like it has perhaps now been mostly traded in for lots more "bang-wiz-wow."

I can definitely agree with that. From the IGN review, it sounded like thats still there for the most part. And this being an origin story will hopefully set up for a more traditional tomb raider like the lifelong fans and some of the reviews are asking.

Get a clue. PAR published a favorable review and they don't give scores at all.

That GT review does seem more negative. Some of the complaints also apply to uncharted too.

I played Uncharted 2 and found it to be not THAT interesting of a game, linear third person shooter, while mostly fun, I wanted more variety. Maybe Tomb Raider can be that for me.

The GT review has like 3 minutes of complaining about how she goes from innocent to a killer lol.

I also see her credited for True Blood which I'm assuming was more along the lines of a eye candy role like Californication? She is on Greys Anatomy now too which I guess is a little more respectable in terms of having to act a little versus just strutting around nude? But I guess that's debatable lol

Doesn't that show exist just to get nude scenes from fresh faces?

They'd had some legit actresses on Californication but also many no names and even some pornstars...sooo maybe?

Square Enix did not discuss review scores with me at all.

Looks the same for me. Your X360 image looks smooth as hell, just like the video comparison. But it does not look sub-hd(?). Maybe different AA method between the two versions.

It's like they didn't even try. No blood spatter on the wall either.

Someone posted yesterday that the models don't react to damage if they're already doing an animation like diving into cover. He said the enemy was shot multiple times while diving and nothing happened until the dive animation was finished :lol

This game looks to be a hit and a lot of you guys had this being a disaster. You guys are the Pachter of video game forums.

Never again will i listen to you guys for anything.

There is a reason the detractors didn't like Tomb Raider. Anyone who was blind could have called this metacritic years ago, and in fact I did call it:

Amir0x said:
"Coincidence" the same way this game is guaranteed 85%+ metacritic rating. Mark this post, because it's basically how obvious game journalists are at this point ;)

(Back in December - this game is sitting comfortably at 86 metacritic)

The problem is what the game has turned into while sacrificing everything that made Tomb Raider great. No one disputes that there's a large audience for brain-dead Uncharted set piece nation crap, just that it has no place in this storied franchise. And if you thought the complaints were about something else, you just weren't listening.

I did get a great laugh out of some of these reviews, though. I could have written some of them a year ago. "This is the reboot Tomb Raider fans have always wanted", writes one. These guys need to just stop being predictable.

Which game shows reaction on enemies while they are already in a canned animation?

Are there any non-spoilerific videos previewing sections other the intro that I've grown tired of? Something that would give a taste of the open/exploratory sections touted in the reviews?

(Also, don't mind my ignorance, but is there a demo for this or plans for one?)
