Layden says the Japanese publishers are also coming back, listing off recent games like Resident Evil 7, Nioh, Nier: Automata, Persona 5 and Final Fantasy XV as examples. "That's super important for us," he says. "I think a lot of Japanese developers lost their way chasing the mobile games yen, if you will, but they're coming back to console in a major way. And speaking of, we'll have some big announcements at E3 in that precise vein."

Not exactly a fan of the title.... lol

But yeah. We're trying to save gaming in Japan, man.

Save gaming in Japan = everyone is happy.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
Monster Hunter: The Movie: The Game upcoming at E3.

It certainly feels that way even though it's not completely true. We got quite a few Japanese games last gen, but a lot of the big ones stunk ass or were exclusive to too many platforms. You'd have to own a 360, PS3, PSP, PC, Wii, DS and sometimes mobile. Most people didn't play all or most of the good ones and the multiplatform games we did play were lacking(FF13). Now it's just more or less 2 consoles and PC we need to play all the good stuff.

Layden says the Japanese publishers are also coming back, listing off recent games like Resident Evil 7, Nioh, Nier: Automata, Persona 5 and Final Fantasy XV as examples. These are odd examples as none of these Japanese developers left, they've simply been languishing in dramatic mismanagement that causes them to miss deadlines or misinterpret the playing field over and over and over again. If anything, the new ground found in mobile is the thing allowing their traditional games business to tread water.

P5 had 3 years of delays, FF15 was restarted twice, Nioh was a MASSIVE risk and Nier is an outsourced title with a (comparitively) moderate budget. This isn't a sign that japan is getting it right, it's a sign that they've been VERY lucky over the past 10 months. These kinds of business mistakes can't continue successfully.

Japan is still risky as fuck right now. Thankfully certain developers like Sega have acknowledged that they've fucked up and seem to be interested in righting their respective ships. That being said, for every "GGXRev2 is on PC!" there's a big fat, "PS4 gets all sorts of discounts at release, but on PC, we are literally blocked from giving you a discount because we don't know how the PC marketplace works, so you should probably refund the game and just get it on PS4 because we don't care enough about this." One step forward, two steps back.
