Polyphony's Kazunori Yamauchi thinks Gran Turismo Sport can run at 8K on PS5

During the studio tour, Kazunori Yamauchi took us from desk to desk, showing his staff beavering away on the game and the insane amount of detail the team goes to make the experience authentic. It’s really quite insane.
At one particular desk, he zoomed right in on the wheel of a car to show the small-type – like the PSI – was in place and legible. A ridiculous detail given you’ll never notice at 300km/h flying down from the heights of Mount Panorama.
Then he said the following: "It takes six months to create a single car. It’s over-specced for PS4 Pro. So we are building for future versions of the console rather than the one we see today".

Intrigued by the suggestion that Gran Turismo Sport is being built to work on a theoretical PlayStation 5, whenever it might eventuate, during our one-on-one I asked Kazunori Yamauchi to clarify that comment. He replied, “I think it would be no problem to run it at 8K even.”

I guess it could. HDMI 2.1 will support 8K resolution.

Too bad nobody will own an 8K TV any time soon though.

That's plausible, wait.. 8K has 4x the pixels of 4K.

Hmm, PS5 for 2020+ That's gonna take a lot of power if 8K is a target for the next generation consoles.

I don't have much faith in expecting a native 8K resolution on consoles for early 2020 though, the GPU power could be used to improve graphical fidelity while rendering at a native 4K.

I thought that 4K has only really just started to take off, maybe I'm wrong? So I'm not quite sure if it's plausible to expect 8K TVs to consume a sizable amount of the market in early 2020 but who knows?

Maybe downsample?

How about we get to 1080/60 first.

I believe they showed 8k concept TVs years ago when they were first showing 4K TVs at CES, etc

This is why I walked into a Sony store 5 years ago when they first showed 4k. I said to the clerk "is that an 8k TV??" (Having read tech blogs) And he said "no, it's 4K". Lol, obsolete on day one.

Not true, for the last 3 years 8K TV's have been at CES and I believe LG will release some this year.

Just because they're releasing one doesn't mean it'll be affordable whatsoever. They show a lot of things at CES, most of them either aren't ready to be released in the market or are simply way too expensive for any meaningful adoption.

As it stands, 4K TVs are still premium, cutting edge technology that consumers are only just digging into. 8K is a long way off.

I mean the interesting news there is that they're future proofing their models. Maybe it won't take 10 years to get a new GT game.

lolno

Isn't what he's trying to say simply that the models would be good enough to use them at 8k?

This.

He is trying to say is that the models are very high resolution, and can be used for future Gran Turismo installments (which will be on PS5, PS6, ect)

PS5 will be a 4K console

PS6 will possibly be 8K

And the circle never ends.

Never.

Ever.

PS5 comes around.......Kaz "8K is not enough, we need more"
*Stares at those who were so against standard cars*
This is the future you deserve.

In all seriousness, I think this gen of models are future proof. So hopefully no more resets to the car count.

Instead of saying nonsense maybe he could try to finish a game in less than 5 years that has nothing but current gen in-game car models and a lot of them.

You said "Too bad nobody will own an 8K TV any time soon though." to which I pointed out they are being released this year, now you're saying no one can afford one...

I love GT and play them all but each game they say they are building models for the future. Then inevitably they say they need to rebuild everything from scratch again.

That's good to hear, but imo 4k with HDR and some good AA should be ok for the next decade.
Let's not waste precious gpu resources on higher resolutions for a couple years, ok?

Which is the same thing. If you can't afford it because it's priced too high for consumers, then nobody is going to own one. Adoption rates will be virtually non-existent. 4K needs to mature before the movie/video game/TV industries can start thinking about 8K. This isn't really hard to understand tbh.

Honestly, i hope 8k NEVER happens outside of cinemas and extremely high end projectors.

And that sounds like the quickest possible way to throw resources away, but yeah, what he's saying is the models would look good even displayed in 8k, which anyone would agree with.

Anyone, except Kaz himself, that is..
Comes 2020 he'll realise the seams on seats aren't fully modeled and he will order a complete remodel of every car in the game.

Not true, for the last 3 years 8K TV's have been at CES and IIRC LG will release some this year.

FUCK.
I hope no one buys one.

Future hardware might run game X at resolution Y.

Didn't they also say this for the premium cars of GT5/6 only to end up throwing them into the bin and recreating everything from scratch for GTS?

So apparently everyone has the same pocket according to you.
Releasing a TV and not being able to afford one are two different things, they release product because there's a market for it, just because you or the average joe can't afford it doesn't mean no one will buy it.
4K OLED TV's started out the same way they were expensive as hell years ago, now you can buy one for maybe $1000 or less, it's the same thing, people were buying it then also, just less compared to now.
If you go to any store you'd be hard pressed to find more 1080p TV's than 4K ones ATM, all those new buyers there's a high chance they purchase a 4K TV which drives adoption rate.

Didn't he say the same thing about models in GT5 & GT6? How about modelling cars that are suited for the platform you're releasing on? All this talk of over engineering them is (a) wasteful and inefficient, and (b) likely a load of bollocks when they turn around and remodel them for the umpteenth time for GT8

Six months for a single car? Maybe he should go visit Turn10 and learn from them because their cars all look great, their games aren't half-assed and don't take 5+ years to come out.

If only there was a way to give that job to specialists that model vehicles for video games on a daily basis. No, I'm just talking nonsense here, it's not possible.

lol

isn't this what they said about the models for the ps3 games too

Afaik the game runs at 1800p on PS4 Pro with 4.2 TFLOPS, that means they probably need about 24 TFLOPS for 8K. So PS5 = 24 TFLOPS comfirmed, nice.
