Land 'O Lakes, Florida -- The stories in the news about inappropriate relationships between teachers and students have been overwhelming. There was even a substitute teacher in New Port Richey who got in trouble after investigators say she had a relationship with an underage student.

Well, another Pasco County substitute teacher's job is on the line, but this time it's because of a magic trick.

The charge from the school district — Wizardry!

Substitute teacher Jim Piculas does a 30-second magic trick where a toothpick disappears then reappears.

But after performing it in front of a classroom at Rushe Middle School in Land 'O Lakes, Piculas said his job did a disappearing act of its own.

"I get a call the middle of the day from head of supervisor of substitute teachers. He says, 'Jim, we have a huge issue, you can't take any more assignments you need to come in right away,'" he said.

When Piculas went in, he learned his little magic trick cast a spell and went much farther than he'd hoped.

"I said, 'Well Pat, can you explain this to me?' 'You've been accused of wizardry,' [he said]. Wizardry?" he asked.

Tampa Bay's 10 talked to the assistant superintendent with the Pasco County School District who said it wasn't just the wizardry and that Picular had other performance issues, including "not following lesson plans" and allowing students to play on unapproved computers."

Piculas said he knew nothing about the accusations.

"That... I think was embellished after the fact to try to cover what initially what they were saying to me," he said.

After the magic trick, Rushe's principal requested Piculas be dismissed. Now, Piculas believes the incident may have bewitched his ability to get a job anywhere else.

"I still have no idea what my discipline involves because I've never received anything from the school district actually saying what it entails," said Piculas.

As a substitute teacher, the Pasco County School District considers Piculas to be an "at will employee." That means the district doesn't need to have cause for not bringing him back at all.

I'd like to invoke Poe's law, what with the wizardry, and the piss poor journalism and Florida. But it seems legit.

I know it states other issues with the guys performance but the fact that "wizardry" was even a factor is beyond silly.

Yeah, it's BS they're trying to claim there were other reasons for firing him. All substitute teachers should be allowed to have a few gags, whether they're weird stories, hackey sacking ability, or magic tricks.

Getting old subs to talk about their time in the War was the best part of having a substitute!

I would think that David Blaine and Criss Angel contributed to magicians being laughed at more than feared.

YES!

One sub I had in 11th grade told us about the time he had a monkey named Scruggs while he was on a boat in Japan!

This is a complete witch hunt.

What? You guys sure there was no other reason we may not know about? Maybe he was fooling around too much and some students eventually got fed up. I know I did with a teacher in high school who always joked around instead of teaching, didn't tell on him though.

Oh, they just opened themselves out for a major civil lawsuit.

They could have fired him based on those performance issues, but noooooo, someone had to open thier big fat mouth.

The guy's set for life.

"Germany or Florida" is a game based around the fact the majority of stupid news stories come from either Germany or Florida.
But that completely ignores Texas :-/

Well, if you're going to get fired, that's a pretty good way to go. At the minimum he has a story to tell.

I seriously live 3 minutes away from LOL.

LOL can be a mixed bag. It's richer and more eloquent cousin Wesley Chapel right next door is light years ahead of it.

I was hoping for Australia

On the scale of expectations of what country this would be in, Australia is probably par with most of western Europe and other civilized nations.

You're both being far too kind to the school.

Even when the news station contacted them and they knew they were being quoted, they still called it "wizardry." It's a magic trick! I doubt you'll find Harry Potter in their library either.
