Apart from the obvious economic turmoil ongoing in Spain right now, and to the lesser extent the UK and the forgone downturn in expenditure in regards to nonessential items.

The other main contributor to the downturn in sales is that this is the longest gen in recent memory and technology stagnation has been an issue for awhile now, so much so that big publishers have been asking for next gen for the past two years or so.

You often see talk of core gaming is on the decline, I don't believe it ........ yes the fair weather gamers that jumped on the Wii are gone to pastures new like iOS and also many gamers now get their portable kicks there, but the core home console market is pretty much the same.

They might not be buying many games (there are to many games worth buying at the moment) or consoles (the core is saturated) but hey are still there ..... we just need machines to generate excitement and hype over the potential new treasures to be had with next gen consoles.

A lot of people from Spain buy games from the UK online retailers like amazon.co.uk, play or zavvi. Cheaper (~20€) and even faster for pre-orders. Surely this had some impact in these numbers.

As other people say, considering spanish economy that doesnt seem that bad. I thought we were going to have worse numbers. People here still want entertainment, even if their economy is not that good.

Also 3DS software is better than last year, WiiU will probably do the same next, as they were consoles that were given birth in this bad economy, its easy for them to go up as each year passes.
Germany and france are also not too bad all things considered.
The bad thing here is UK. That 22 percent down is not good in the slightlest.

Another European country where the 3DS is doing quite well. Highlighting the loss of the handheld market is no shrug for Sony; its a serious dent if Vita can't replace the PSP. Vita hard to judge but terrible software numbers.

Genrally Spanish gaming looks quite healthy. Compared to other European markets although its nowhere near as big.

Germany going to overtake UK this year. Pretty solid figures for Spain too considering their economy.

Do wr have numbets for the same period? Would not surprise me if Germany > UK this first quarter.

2012 was very close for them and UK had a terrible start to the year.

Nice to see that the market for dedicated portable game consoles is still relevant in Spain.

PSP is still strong thanks to an affordable price (99€) and specially the PSP Essentials budget series.

777.000 units between PS3 + Wii + Xbox 360 + PS2 + Wii U.

Two years ago Wii sold 700.000 units and PS3 600.000.

Not a single 360 title in the top 20. It's just like here in Portugal, sony land through and through, though the wii did have a popularity spike a while back.
I go to Spain a lot and have friends there who are also gamers and both markets are very similar. The PSP is incredibly popular, I'm constantly seeing kids with it when I go out. Nobody seems to care about the vita though.
Our biggest electronics chain opened a new store were I live recently. I went there on the first day and decided to check out the videogame section, the PSP was literally flying off the shelves while nobody gave the vita as much as a thought. The economy here is also at an all time low and the PSP's price point is ideal, people don't feel like the vita justifies the price difference.
Then there's piracy. I bet Portugal's top 20 wouldn't have a PSP title on it either, it's not because there's not enough people with the hardware, piracy on the system is just friggin' huge.

This. Especially since unemployment for young folks is sky high.

And the not so young... :(

This. I don't understand how anyone still buys retail over here. The prices are absolutely ridiculous. You can expect 60€-70€ (80-90$) for a lot of games that are 10-20€ from UK dealers. This is in a country where the modal (most frequent) salary is 16.500€ (21.500$). Substract 20% taxes from that and that's around 13.500€ (17.600$). Yes, yearly. Absolutely insane.

Oh yeah that too. More and more people are realizing what a rip-off videogame prices are around here.
We pay 70 euro for a new console game here in Portugal. That's $91! In one of the poorest countries of the UE!
And prices in the UK drop like crazy, here they only lower the price when the games are re-released as platinum and rarely go below that.
It's crazy when I browse zavvi and see games that were released 3 months ago for 20 euro and then enter a store here and see those same games with a 70 euro pricetag on them. Whenever I see someone buy a game I actually feel sorry for them.
Second hand market has also been incredibly busy, it's another way around the high prices, no wonder gamestop closed all their stores here.

Hard times para la piel de toro. :(

Rough, hard fucking times here.

It's normal...you keep murdering them..

Anyway, shitty situation for the country. I'm not surprised on the results...although the young people is unemployed as fuck, most of them prefer to stay at home playing vg than studying... Spain has an enourmous structural problem with the education (and many other things) so i'm not expecting any bright future soon..

ADESE numbers are completely useless.

I´m buying everything digitally (90%) and imported from the UK (the rest) so it´s not the market size decreasing but the local industry dying because of global economy.

Damn, those are some impressive hardware numbers. Even the US is only what, around 25 million a year or so?

Yeah yeah I know.

Anyways, on topic, interesting to see Europe moving towards 3 roughly equivalent big 3 markets rather than the "Britannia rules the games" market of the last 5 years or so.

This. Especially since unemployment for young folks is sky high.

The funemployed need something to do with their time, and in any developed country even they will have access to money in some manner.

I love how PS2 is still owning left and right.

Doesn't "owning" indicate that it is leading or beating the competition? It looks like it's 9th out of 11 to me, beating only "PC edutainment" and a new console on the market for 1 month. Unless you mean it is still beating the GCN and XBox in which well yes, yes it is (and forever will).

If we were on that numbers it will be WAR.
We are on a 26.02% wich still BAD, but lol dude, get your numbers right.

Yep, If you see my quote I was talking about youth unemployment, not global. Sorry if it wasnt clear.

That's a very simplistic analisis. Actually, a lot of Spanish young people are required in Germany for example, due to his very well preparation and academic profile. And related to bullfighting I Don't want to respond, I may be unpolite, but please inform yourself before doing such ridiculous and simplistic statments.

Should be noted the UK has seen sharp falls whilst everywhere else has suffered less sharp falls. UK is a smaller county afterall so its not really shocking; its just been a big centre of gaming for a long time. These things change with trends and tastes.

I'm having a hard time reading these numbers. Is . being used as a decimal separator in some places and as a thousands separator in other places? And for DS-WiiU someone just forgot to put a decimal altogether?

Edit: Looked at the source documents. It's using European convention throughout, but "miles" is being mistranslated here as millions instead of thousands for software units.

goes to show how successful ps3 is in the PAL region . In many regions like middle east , it has over 80% marketshare and it costs almost 2x as an x360

I expect PS4 to totally wipe out competition in the PAL region if Wii U doesnt make a comeback

Serves them right.
I'm not paying 70 euro for a game when I can order it from Amazon UK and pay only 35-40 euro.

I'm surprised they get away with those prices as much as they do.

And then yeah, we don't have jobs and people with jobs still have to use their ridiculously low wages to pay their ridiculously high rents/mortgages.

So we are certainly pretty fucked!

i guess those software numbers indicate that the people who use barca/madrid online for xbox are not from spain

Two months late, but:

It's normal...you keep murdering them..

Funnily enough, a lot of young (<40) people are enraged and horrified that this shit (bullfighting) is still legal, let alone "a tradition to preserve". There have been a lot of attempts from many sources to suspend bullfighting indefinitely, with various but generally disappointing degrees of success. It doesn't help that the current, far right party in charge of the country (and absolutely murdering everything from education to public healthcare to even the water supply) is, of course, extremely pro-bullfighting and does everything in their power (which is, obviously, a lot) to not just defend it and label it as an important part of Spanish culture and tradition, but even support it with public money.

As a animal rights supporter myself, take a guess how I feel about the whole situation. I'm not sure what could help at this point, but a coordinated awareness and shaming campaign from outside countries perhaps could? If it becomes a big enough scandal it might turn some heads.

Anyway, shitty situation for the country. I'm not surprised on the results...although the young people is unemployed as fuck, most of them prefer to stay at home playing vg than studying... Spain has an enourmous structural problem with the education (and many other things) so i'm not expecting any bright future soon..

The core problem is the political class; Spain is a flea-ridden dog. We have like three times as many politicians per person than most countries, with astronomical salaries, most of which care for nothing but keeping their families and colleagues inside.
