---Tournament Format---

The 40th IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships will be held in Helsinki, Finland from Dec 26 2015-Jan 5, 2015, featuring many of the world's top hockey talents under the age of 20 (eligible players were born between 1996-2001). Many of the players are prospects drafted by NHL teams, as well as a handful of the top draft-elibible prospects for 2016.

The tournament consists of two Groups, A and B, of 5 teams each. Each group plays their games at one of the two venues in a round robin format. The lowest ranked team from each group will be forced to play in the relegation round, a best of 3 set which will determine the nation relegated to the lower ranked Division I for the following season.

After the group rounds have completed, the 8 qualifying teams advance to the quarterfinals, and so on.

---Participants---

Notes: Participants are granted eligibility based on performance at past IIHF U20 tournaments. These are the 9 top teams from last year's World Junior Championships and the 1 team promoted from the IIHF Division I Championship (Belarus). Groups are determined through seeding from last year's tournament.

Medalists from the 2015 edition of the WJC were Canada (gold), Russia (silver), and Slovakia (bronze).

---Rules---

Games consist of 3 periods of 20 minutes each; if the score is tied after regulation, then games proceed to 4v4 sudden death overtime. The length of overtime is 5 minutes in the non-elimination round, and 10 minutes in the elimination and relegation rounds. If no goal is scored in overtime, then the winner shall be decided in a penalty shootout where each side gets no fewer than 3 attempts to score.

After the group round, seedings for the elimination round are determined by points standings. Regulation wins in the group round earn 3 points; non-regulation wins earn 2 points; non-regulation losses earn 1 point. Should teams be tied in the standings, the tiebreak procedure will use head-to-head performance and goal differential in the group round.

Pretty wild how Brayden Point went from basically the 13th forward at the start last year, to a relied upon player when Robby Fabbri got injured, and now he's Canada's captain and a top liner.

shows how much his stock is continually rising

See? the Lightning don't need Stamkos.

Nice topic, good to have all the player #s with their names for reference as well.

Excited to see Marner and Nylander dominate.

Worried about Canada, though, after the game against Sweden.

Eh, Sweden should be pretty good, I think we're not used to seeing that level of competition in the pre-tournament. I think it's good to be challenged early on and pick up on what needs improvement before the games matter.

Spent Christmas and New Years with my wife's family in Montreal a few years ago and this was all that was on the Canadian ESPN (TSN I think) while I was there. Russia came from behind in the final game and beat Canada that year but I didn't know until then that this was a HUGE DEAL

Also related to this is that Leafs prospect Martins Dzierkals led his Team Latvia to a Division I Championship a few weeks ago

That means he will be participating in the 2017 edition of the WJCs!

For once we will have maybe actually good offence (Finland). Rantanen and Kapanen are top 25 drafts from last draft (and especially Rantanen has played very well in AHL). Puljujärvi and Laine will be probably top 10 drafts next summer and Sebastian Aho has been one of the leading players in his finnish league team this year (not to mention Kärpät is one of the top teams in Finnish League). Defence though is big question mark. Also goaltending while it should be solid like always for us is not amazing on paper like it was last time we won.

first game between Russia and Czech Republic is in 7 hours

I am not sure if I will be able to catch the first game. Please let me know how Provy and Fazleev play. Also Kase. But Provy is the one to watch. Should start the season next year with us. Too good for the WHL and isn't eligible to play in the AHL

It's crazy how much this is shoved down our throats in Canada. I wished the rest of the World would care.

Seems like it's gaining popularity in Europe, much like how the senior WCs have always been a big deal overseas

Don't think the US will ever care though haha

probably only going to catch the second half, 7 AM is a bit early for me anyway, and I've had a busy day, lol

but yeah I'll try to see as many matches as I can. this is the first year TSN is doing every game I think.

Many Canadians remember that one.

One of the joys (and terrors) of junior hockey is just how unsafe any lead is ...

I haven't been able to watch a lot of World Juniors games due to my work schedule in the past, but I'm free until the new year, so I'm aiming to finally watch a lot more games.

Bless Marner, Nylander, Kapanen, Dermott, and Timashov.

We'll teach those commies how we play hockey up north.

NO GOOD VISOR-WEARIN', HOTDOGGIN', HERT-A-WHIRLIN', MANIFESTO-READIN' COMMIES.

Shoved down our throats? If I didn't actively seek out this tournament, I'd hear nothing of it. But I also don't have cable, so yeah.

Staying with my parents so I'll be waking up tomorrow to watch, at a minimum, the Canada/US game. Maybe the Russia/Czech one, too. Hyped

Stuck working this morning, so I'll miss the first couple of games, but have been looking forward to the start of the tournament.

7 Flyers prospects this year! Gonna be fun.

It's gaining popularity here in Finland at least as media is hyping these tournaments more than before. Also people are starting to realize that north americans actually care about this tournament so that is drawing the fighting spirit from people ''lets fucking beat them'' lol. Something like 10 years ago pretty much no one outside of hardcore ice hockey fans cared. Still long way to go compared to popularity of senior WCs.

Finland has pretty damn interesting offense lineup this year. Patrik Laine is imo number 2 guy for next summer's draft. And Mikko Rantanen has been one of the best AHL players this season.
