Lolita sure is a wonderfully written book even though I'm sure that 80% of its allusions and what not just went over my head. Took me way to long to finish it though.

While the premise of King Arthur might have been rather interesting everything else was just really mediocre. Plus, as a German it is more than a little amusing watching Till Schweiger "act". Funny that his mumbling isn't actually that bad when he speaks English.

New movie:

[*] The Ides of March ★★★★ - Everything about this movie is great. Superb acting, good pacing to the plot and a great look at the behind the scenes manipulation in politics. What a cast!

Congrats! After your last update I knew you would be the first Gaffer. Good stuff.

It's only August...are you going to keep at it and see where you end up?

I'll keep at it. I'm going back to school on Monday so that should stagger the pace. Will try to keep the balance as I found that part very rewarding.

Since I've finally finished the movie part of this challenge, I thought it'd be once again time for an update. The best of the last five movies was definitely High Anxiety (1977). I love films by Mel Brooks and this one was really great too.
Normally I prefer reading in English but the last four books are originally written in German and I'm not even sure if Bernd Perplies' books are translated into any other language. Those three books of him were really great. I read that they are a steampunk trilogy but I thought that this part wasn't that promient - there were just a few little things that are related to this genre. Nevertheless those books were great. I loved the magicsystem Bernd Perplies developed and I thought it was great that he didn't describe the world his trilogy plays in in the first 100 pages but just starts with the story on page one and you learn more and more about everything as the books proceed.

Seems like really good progress so far. You got this!

Life has slowed down my reading peace quite a bit this month, but I've been able to catch up on movies so that's good.

New movie:

[*] Louis C.K.: Oh My God ★★★★ - For a comedian who is so prolific, it's amazing how consistently great he is. This was maybe a minor step down from last year's set, but he still kills it. There's no better storyteller in America right now.

I quite enjoyed Theft of Swords. The book doens't do anything especially new to the fantasy genre but the characters are likable, the plot is interesting and the overall prose is also good. Really solid entertainment and I'm actually looking forward to jump into the next book right away.

Four rooms was... I don't know. While I enjoyed the whole concept and idea. I couldn't help that a lot of the humor felt a bit dated to a point were it sometimes got cringeworthy. I liked the Banderas episode the most.

I was really positively surprised by Life of Pi. I loved the book which normally means that I will absolutely hate the movie. I actually remained rather sceptical at the beginning of the movie. The bad CGI animals in the opening made me dread what Richard Parker would look like and I quickly developed a great dislike for both the actors of adult Pi and the author. But l have to say while it was of course at times visable when they were using the CGI tiger instead of a real one it was still really impressing how good they made him look. Kind of explains why all the other animals looked like shit.
And luckily we don't see that much of adult Pi and the author so that too was good and the boy playing young Pi did an absolute fantastic job.
There were of course a few aberrations from the book but I found them to be rather minor and probably nescessary.

[*] Naoki Higashida - The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism. ★★★★★ This book is a complete masterpiece and unlocks insight into a journey that has largely been a mystery for me during my son's three years of life. Not every question that Naoki addresses directly fits our boy, but a large quantity do and the answers are mesmerizing and amazing. Like my son, the author has an absolutely beautiful soul that not even communication and social delays can hide.

A few updates.

New movies:

[*] Contagion ★★★★ - Watch this great film.

[*] Man on a Ledge ★½ - Skip this trash.

New book:

[*] James S.A. Corey - Leviathan Wakes ★★★★★ - This book is a modern sci-fi masterpiece, with imagination and creativity to spare. The plot pacing and character interaction was excellent and really drew me in from beginning to end. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Woah, you're a beast! How many hours a day do you manage to read, if you don't mind me asking? I wish I could invest that much time into reading.

Thanks! I try to read at least a couple of hours a day, with more on the weekends. I'll slip in some reading whenever I can, such as when I'm eating breakfast/lunch and on the train/bus, and I'll also read an hour or two before I go to sleep. According to the Goodreads total page number I've read about 210 pages each day this year, which I'm pretty satisfied with.

That's amazing. I think I'll start taking my kindle with me wherever I go to get some more reading done.

Kindles have made reading so much more convenient for me. I doubt I've ever read more that 15 books in a year before, but with my tablet +the Kindle app I'm tearing through books this year.

An hour or so a day at night and some other random sessions here and there makes it easy to finish a book or two a week, size depending.

Headed off to enjoy the morning with my family, but if xyla hasn't done a monthly update but this evening I will when I get home. Go ahead and post your latest updates so I don't miss anyone in the tally. It sucks to see 3 or 4 posts right after putting out the new stats since I want to include everyone.

----

I need to quicken my book reading pace. 11 books in eight weeks is OK, but I could do better. I appear to be slacking a whole lot in my week on at work [I work on alternate weeks], so I suppose night shift work is taking its toll.
On the other hand, a film every couple of days is easy work. At least for now.

For September, the goal is to read a book every three days, or ten in about five weeks. I've got at least four books lined up, and a couple I've decided to leave for the end of the year. I will try to finish off the remaining novels in the Wool series. They're mercifully short, and just now hitting their stride.

Yep, I actually saw a part of the movie before and really liked it. So I stopped the movie and decided to read the book and then go back to the movie. Really charming movie/book.

  • Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 2 (2013, dir. Jay Oliva) - ★★★
  • Elysium (2013, dir. Neill Blomkamp) - ★★★½
  • Tangled (2010, dir. Nathan Greno, Byron Howard) - ★★★½ - Fun and sweet with a dash of charming. It told a simple tale really well, something that's often lacking today.
  • Dredd (2012, dir Pete Travis) - ★★★★ - This movie proves that boiling down something to its essence helps. Dredd in a Training Day-esque setting, golden. Urban delivers and it's a joy to watch. You'd almost think that Hollywood might see this as a kick to the head on how R-rated action is supposed to be made.
  • The Hunger Games (2012, dir. Gary Ross) - ★★ - It never amounts to anything. Perhaps it was me not paying enough attention but I never "got" it. Never boring but never good either.
  • End of Watch (2012, dir. David Ayer) - ★★★ - I hate crime. I don't really want to know how bad it actually gets in these places but after seeing this in such close proximity to Dredd (2012) I'd take a wild stab at what the future holds for these places. As for the movie, it's tight and caries some nice weight to its action. Good performances all around.
  • Midnight in Paris (2011, dir. Woody Allen) - ★★★ - This is the second Woody Allen movie I liked and I've seen about a dozen of them. It's whimsical and fun. It reminded me a lot about the movie in which his mother starts living in heaven barking orders at him (or something) but this time the movie was good. The most dissappointing thing in it was that there wasn't much of substance in it.
  • Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011, dir. Michael Bay) - ★★ - I don't really know how to rate this one. I did enjoy it. I did find it good. But to the question "Would you like to see it again?" I'd have to answer, "NO! Not in a million years." and that would be the answer to "Would you recommend it to anyone?" too. But but, it was really well put together. Some fine editing and some good action scenes thought it was all pointless and a bit of a mess.
  • Argo (2012, dir. Ben Affleck) - ★★★★ - Spy films don't come around very often. A couple of years ago we had Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and now we have Argo. We need to take every chance we get to see them or they all get turned into Bourne. Affleck can now safely be considered a good director and his movies should be kept an eye on.

  • Sherlock (Season 2, 2011) - ★★★½ - I like it but I'm not overly fond of the serious-when-we-feel-like-it vibe. I have a hard time taking it serious. Moriarty is a joke. But, it keeps me entertained and it puts on a good show.

  • Dishonored [PC] (2012, Arkane Studios) - ★★★
  • Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (2013, Square Enix) - ★★★ - It's pretty good at times but far from the refined crack we know as World of Warcraft. It's pretty to look at and there's some great character customization. Too bad it's boring for long stretches of time when you go from point A to point B with no real clue why you have to. It's a step in the right direction but it can still be further improved upon.
  • Grand Theft Auto V [PS3] (2013, Rockstar North) - ★★★★ - It's great. It really is. It's getting a bit too formulatic for its own good. It doesn't help it that every other game wants to be it either. But for what it is it always excels. Michael, Franklin and Trevor are great "protagonists". For all the great stuff they put in I can't help feeling that this series isn't for me anymore. I had fun. I had great fun but somewhere in the back of my head I knew I had more fun with Vice City and San Andreas.

★ = Bad, ★★ = Okay, ★★★ = Good, ★★★★ = Very good, ★★★★★ = Brilliant
