A new Studio AAA by ACTIVISION announced ELSEWHERE

The BC program was ended, when it was, because of licensing or technical constraints. I'm not seeing the overlap here lol
And then they bought ABK. And thus acquired full ownership of several games, rendering licensing a non-issue.

For example:

Xa4obhA.jpeg

Return to Caslte Wolfenstein.

There is literally no part of this game that Microsoft doesn't own 100%.

I believe the same goes for Quake 4.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

You're making it sound like something an intern can do in an afternoon. Technical constraints are also a part of the equation.

"Yes, this is the final addition of Xbox 360 and original Xbox games to the backward compatibility program. We have reached the limits of our ability to add additional games to the catalog due to licensing, legal or technical constraints. We know we’ve said this before, but we went back one more time to bring as many fan-requested titles as possible to the catalog to celebrate our 20th anniversary.”

They ended the BC program once before in 2019 but revived it back for 2021, who knows, maybe they'll consider it again.

Studio has been created for some time now.... And I do not believe that a Studio of the size assumed, guided by people of high caliber and great curriculum, is going to be in danger of being closed in the short term. Even more so in Poland where costs are exaggeratedly lower...

We will see
The problem is not about being closed. It is about headhunting the right people and convince them to abandon their present situation and risk to work years for who? MS. Obviously MS would have to be stupid to end a studio that they have been in control for a few months now. But questions remain. Who wanted that studio? Now that Kotick is gone, who knows what he promised to the people his company headhunted to create it? Don't get me wrong, if they are pushing for it they probably have a reason, but SlimySnake SlimySnake has a point in saying that MS brutal cost cutting will have consequences. We will see, but what I am curious about is that the blog post was made by anonymous staff instead of some leader from Activision. Are they still learning to work with/under MS or are Activision not pushing their executives in the limelight by design?

Ah yes, the announcement of a new studio, that happens a lot with Xbox huh

When's the last time Sony or Nintendo announced a new studio? I think they are too busy releasing games to do that

The ONLY thing I enjoyed from them is when they published Sekiro….other than that I can’t think of single game they made I liked.

Tell me where there is today certainty that you will not find yourself in situations of layoffs..... You are coming from a few weeks where UBi, TekeTwo, EA, SEGA, Square etc, etc have. Studios closed, fired people and projects canceled. And we must remember that a few months ago Sony fired people in all of its Studios.....
Of course it is not only in the MS Studios where there is insecurity. I mean, I guess there are more things to take into account than MS background when accepting a job in it's Studios. You are presenting things as if MS had decided to close Studios and layoffs each week when the situation is that we are here dealing with the creation/announcement of a new Studio.

PS. There is a Studios official web...

  • The studio is working on a "narrative based" game in a totally new AAA franchise.

...Activision is going to make a totally new AAA franchise? Activision? Do they not remember that they already have the only franchise they need, it's called "Call of Duty"?

Aside from Sekiro (which they published for FromSoft) and depending on how you count Skylanders (which is a Spyro spinoff,) there is not a single new franchise on their product portfolio going back to 2010. And each studio attached to the products listed which isn't CoD is now either A. dead, B. absorbed into a different department, or C. making CoD. Somehow, they've gone almost 15 years before thinking, "What if we made a new game?"

I thought Phil is closing shit down so WTF is this???
At the end of the day we are just gamers who work with what we read and hear. We don’t know shit about what their plans are behind closed doors but it always comes out sounding messy. A lot of changes going on over there

Wouldn’t it be cool if they were migrating some of the talent from arcane Austin to this new studio. Would at least be a silver lining for those guys.

I still can’t get over the fact they let go of the people who worked on prey….. talk about dashing away talent. This is what gets on my nerves about MS.

I want to like that they have done this but…….

Layoffs are a risk no matter where you are, but leaving a known situation for a unknown one, with volatile management in the process of being replace in the biggest acquisition in the gaming market is not really safer IMHO. I did want to present things in such a dark way, and yes all big publishers had and will have layoffs too. Remember that Larian was against being acquired by anybody because in part of those kind of risks. This is not a dig at MS, but the fact that they had made their message clear with the closure of Tango, after praising them for their work. 10 years ago, Xbox was too strict with their studios, then they changed. Now they are too focused on their statistics, and hopefully this will change too. Once again, the problem is not MS in itself, as I don't think that Xbox have problems recruting right now. But the timing is not good for me, if you see what I mean by that.

I’d like to know who are those The Last of Us veterans, I really do. I know two guys who worked at TLoU but they were concept artists/marketing artists… Maybe they hired people from US and they work from home. Then again, they will earn more then employees in Poland. It’s not good for morale.

A collection of token employees will gather in a brand new office for a speech, Sarah Bond will say allot about nothing and leave the staff wondering. There will be no cake.

The problem isn't headhunting for developers in my honest opinion, that were promised stuff by Kottick, who is now gone. The problem is acquiring devs, who have chemistry with one another and their dev culture and process is compatible, devs who see eye to eye with one another.

Otherwise, you'll end up with another TheInitiative situation, where you acquire all manner of veteran talent, end up not knowing where the fuck you want to take your game's direction and then have the entire situation reach a boiling point, leading to a big number of them quite literally up and depart the studio due to creative differences alongside a whole slate of other issues...and Microsoft ain't exactly seen in a positive manner right now given their recent actions in the game dev space. As for how this could go down? Nobody knows for certain.

The most hazardous thing in the gaming industry is touting, raving and boasting about a new studio, because it's comprised of veterans, that has never worked if history has shown us anything about game dev. Have them work on and ship a working, stable release under the new studio, then you can boast as much as you want. Devs need to have chemistry and mutual understanding between them for a new studio to work. Otherwise, it's a lost cause, as you'll end up with a toxic , suboptimal work culture due to clashes and disagreements between Devs, slowing down the dev process and constantly hitting roadblocks and dead ends.

The biggest surprise is Activision focusing on a narrative driven single player game, that's not their usual MO last bunch of years.

Here for it. I can a least taking a break from yelling at clouds about everything gaming going casino to consider playing this. LOL

Good news is that the Poland studio are pretty good (CDPR, Techland)

CDPR and Techland have been around for over 10 yrs and shipped multiple games under their belt in order to build up the experience and know-how to produce quality games.

This one... just like every other MS new studio launch, will need time and successive projects to make something high quality and MS has shown consistently they're not prepared to give the time or resources for that.

If this studio's first game isn't a monster hit, it'll be shitcanned like Tango.

The new Xbox + Activision studio presents questions.
Today I decided to investigate LinkedIn again and I found that there are currently 32 employees registered in the study (not all of them have to have LinkedIn or keep it up to date).
They seek to make an innovative RPG that redefines the genre, with armed combat and would include vehicles.
75% of the staff is formerly of CD PROJEKT RED, with many years of experience.
Paint the thing well.

75% of the staff is reportedly formerly from CDPR. They're looking to make an RPG which would also include vehicle combat.

By the time they finally release whatever they come up with it'll be tired and played out. Just a guess. I hope not, though, because it's always nice when a game hits the scene with style.
