Brandish: The Dark Revenant |OT| - Pit Shenanigans

It's finally here... I've waited so many years and it's amazing that we're finally going to play Brandish in English, I already have my PSN account with enough money for this, I can't wait.

Great OT btw, subscribed!

So I'm not huge into dungeon crawlers if I'm being honest. However, I love everything Falcom. Ys, Trails, Xanadu. I've played every souls game so difficulty isn't necessarily an issue.

I assume I should still give it a shot given the above information?

I'm in a similar boat. I'll buy it out of support for XSEED and Falcom but I had to stop playing Etrian Odyssey 4 about 30 hours in because it was just too much repetition and random encounters.

Does this game have a plot with dialogue or is it old school in a sense that there is only gameplay?

Sort of a little from column A, a little from column B. There are story scenes with dialogue boxes and such, but they're VERY few and far between, and mostly consist of encounters with Dela (which usually wind up getting cut off by Dela accidentally falling down a hole or something), brief chats with shopkeepers about how they wound up in the dungeon, or the rare encounter with a ghost, or a friendly goblin, or a treasure hunter, etc., which kind of play out as short side-quests. It's enough to keep things moving, but you'll literally go for like, 2 hour stretches with no plot, then get maybe a minute of dialogue-driven story before it's back to the dungeon with you.

It thus plays out more like a gameplay-only game, but a gameplay-only game with purpose -- there are specific goals to drive you forward, and more than enough lore to really complement the game's atmosphere, but it's really all there to justify the gameplay, as opposed to the gameplay existing to justify the story as in many other JRPGs.

so what does it mean when its 'real time'?

its not turn based like Mystery Dungeon stuff?

Nope, not turn-based. You swing your sword directly, raise your shield to block attacks, jump, dodge obstacles, etc. It's a full-on action RPG -- it's just an action RPG on a grid, so it almost has a strategy board game-y feel to it in a way. Most action RPGs rely on speed for challenge, whereas Brandish is more about tactical positioning, timing and full awareness of your surroundings.

So I'm not huge into dungeon crawlers if I'm being honest. However, I love everything Falcom. Ys, Trails, Xanadu. I've played every souls game so difficulty isn't necessarily an issue.

I assume I should still give it a shot given the above information?

If you like Xanadu (any Xanadu), then there's no reason I can conceive of that you wouldn't also enjoy Brandish. All versions of Xanadu are every bit the dungeon-crawler Brandish is. I'd say think of it less like a dungeon-crawler, and more like an atmospheric action RPG that happens to be set in a dungeon -- kind of like how Ys Origin is set entirely within one dungeon, but is ultimately so much more than a simple dungeon-crawler.

Btw, when you play as Dela Delon, will she have her own story?

Yes, but like the regular story, it's pretty minimal -- even more so in Dela's case, as it's more or less a prequel to the events of the main story, and consists almost entirely of Dela trying to track down Ares.

Coming from someone like me that still plays Destiny up to this day, what you just said doesn't bother me one bit aha. If the gameplay is solid, I can totally play the game for ages without feeling the need for a story. Sure it's nice when it's there but this seems like a lot of fun to play.

I'm intrigued by this game. Is it a rogue like game like Shiren Wanderer?? Or more of an action RPG, similar to arcade hits like Magic Sword and Dungeons and Dragons. Can't wait to play it :)

Damn good job on the OT, very nice.
Not sure if i can get it tomorrow but i will definately have this by the weekend.

anywhere from 10am - 2pm PST

We're at the whims of Grace Chen.

The store seems to update around mid-afternoon EST, but they don't usually post the blog announcement with all the new releases until like 5PM or so.

Thanks! I have tomorrow off so I guess I'll just check the store intermittently after I wake up. Really curious about how this game plays, I haven't watched any videos of the game so I'm kinda baffled by the descriptions.

Question: Do you like Brandish, man?
Answer: Yeah.

very nice.

also, great OT.

I'm just waiting for the EU release date.
;_;7

Incredible OT that is informative and seems like you really care about the game you are talking about. Thanks a bunch for including the Q&A section from the Japanese manual. I read those in the Ys Oath in Felghana manual and found them to be so utterly charming. Sadly I heard that there won't be a digital manual for this, but you gave me what I wanted from those pics here so I'm happy enough.

I have listened to so much music from Brandish over the years that it will be nice to finally get to play the game. Tomorrow is Brandish day on my PS TV! ^_^

Is it just me, or do PSP games look sharper on a PSP 3k than Vita?
Depends on settings (bilinear filtering kind of exists for the explicit purpose of smoothing graphics), but you ARE native resolution and on a smaller display there.

Great OT !

Another Falcom game Il be able to play Thanks to XSEED .

Im thinking about importing this, and maybe a few other Brandish titles I always wanted to get into that series (I also like to collect Falcom games) .
I know there is translation for Brandish 4, what about the 3 and how good are they compared to this one ?

how heavy on the rogue-side is this game? do you start from scratch if you die or do you keep some equipment, money and exp/stats?

Fantastic OP!

I've always wanted to play Brandish, and this looks like the first opportunity for me to do so. That being said, the new artwork for Dela features a rather unattractive derp face...

The translation patch for Brandish 4 that's out there only covers the early floors as of now. The hacker and I are preparing a new patch that should cover most of Dee's playthrough, roughly up until the reached half of the tower. The translation is far from finished, though, thanks to the relatively heavy emphasis on its story (and lore) and four playable characters. Its Karma System (similar to the alignments in Shin Megami Tensei), though, affects dialogues up to eight conversation branches and makes it difficult to check all dialogues in-game for quality control. It's doable, but speed up the translation.

Brandish 3: Spirit of Balcan is the only Brandish title left untouched, although Veleskola (who's looking into localising Brandish 2 Renewal) and I have expressed interests in working on Brandish 3. jdkluv has been going on for quite some time now about how its brilliance rivals that of Brandish 2, which he describes as "the best game ever conceived", so that ought to be interesting. We've started looking for someone who can help with inserting text in Brandish 2 Renewal. Since the PC-98 are structured quite similar, we hope the same person can aid us in developing a text insertion tool for Brandish 3 (Renewal).

Thanks everyone for the kind words! It's stuff like this that make it all worthwhile.

Nabbed an avatar, thanks!

I think some of those instruction pictures would make for good avatars too actually.

I'll see what I can do! I'm busy this week with exams and stuff, though. ;-;

I was about to comment on how that's a great OT before I saw the name next to it and it aaaaall made sense.

It's still a great OT, though!

I see my reputation precedes me! lol

Honestly forgot about the remake's level editor...this could get some replay time for sure. Excellent OT as expected, jdkluv!

Just to be accurate - it's just map editor (not a level editor) that allows you to mark/paint pitfalls, hidden doors, etc. on your map. And all the PC-98 Brandish games already had this feature. :)

The release date is still wrong. ;)

Great OP though and you've actually sold me the game (when it comes in Europe). This will be my first dungeon crawler.

:(((( (Glad to hear that though!)

Only the SNES version of Brandish 2 has a fan-translation though, and people are currently working on Brandish 4 as we speak.

Gameplay-wise, Brandish 2 and 3 are pretty much the same as 1, except much better because they kept adding gameplay improvements, and they also have much better level design/music. Brandish 3 is so good you can even back-dodge and do shield bashing moves with Ares, and then you have *three* other characters to play with!

Brandish 2 and 3 are just so fantastic I get all giddy just thinking about it, seriously. Brandish 1/The Dark Revenant is nowhere near as good as the second and third games, but it's still extremely great!

how heavy on the rogue-side is this game? do you start from scratch if you die or do you keep some equipment, money and exp/stats?

I wouldn't exactly call it a "roguelike", since it differs in many fundamental ways. For instance, the levels aren’t randomly generated and never change.

Regarding your question: you don't start from "scratch" if you die. In fact, the save system in this game is extremely forgiving, as it allows you to save on pretty much *everywhere*. You can even get a free restart point when you change between floors, and you can also collect an item called "Retry Bread" that let you set a "quicksave" point anywhere. :)

[...] jdkluv has been going on for quite some time now about how its brilliance rivals that of Brandish 2, which he describes as "the best game ever conceived", so that ought to be interesting.

Glad to hear Brandish 4 is coming along! I've not played very far into Brandish 4, although I've played Brandish VT several times. I just don't find 4 as fun because the soundtrack is a major downgrade as far as I'm concerned. Actually, have you guys considered facilitating some sort of soundtrack replacement? I don't remember the format the music is stored in or whether that'd be easy, but it would be neat.

AFAIK, all the music is stored in WAV files. The thing is, the WAV files are on the disc and not installed locally on the PC :(. We've (well, Gu4n), talked with the hacker to see if it would be possible to add an option to use music from a different folder or something.

I too agree about Brandish VT's music being better than 4's, but I do enjoy some of the arrangements.

Maybe I'm blind and just didn't see it in the OP. How's the loot system? Is there a lot to find, a lot of armor and weapon upgrades?

Normally, I wouldn't consider getting this game, especially because it is a PSP game.

Some people seem to go crazy about this localization though so I got interested. The story of the one translator doing it in his free time pretty much sealed the deal.
Not sure how I will deal with the weird perspective thing.

I have a dumb question that I think I already know the answer to, but am going to ask it anyway.

Since this is a PSP game there are no trophies, correct?

This is going to be awesome to play on the morning train. I've been listening to the soundtrack in preparation.

For me its the difficulty...not sure I have the patience for this kind of game anymore(and to be frank lol,the skills).

Downloading, I just can't say "NO" to a Falcom game. Thanks XSEED for constantly giving us stuff I'd probably never get to play otherwise.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
BOUGHT.

I'm really enjoying Captain Toad, but I might kick it to the curb for the night and focus on this when I get home.
