Not possible, you have to spend them to open the door.

Heh guess I could've tried that. Just wanted to see if there was any kind of risk/reward to not spending them, but it sounds like there's not.

The risk is there is a chance that you won't be able to progress, and that chance is 100%

Actually you can break the door by attacking it and leave with all your cells. There's an achievement for holding 100+ cells at once, so that's probably the main reason to do it.

DirectX has improved the stuttering while scrolling for me a bit but it is not completely gone yet. It made the game playable at least.

Yeah they do, especially when you have a "take 2x damage" weapon equipped :/
