In recent weeks, EA has aligned all elements of its organizational structure behind priorities in new technologies and mobile. This has led to some difficult decisions to reduce the workforce in some locations. We are extremely grateful for the contributions made by each of our employees – those that are leaving EA will be missed by their colleagues and friends.

These are hard but essential changes as we focus on delivering great games and showing players around the world why to spend their time with us.

no word on where or how many.

We've heard from a couple of sources that EA is cutting jobs today with estimates of as much as 10% of the workforce. EA won't comment on teams affected or the headcount, but this means that fewer people are working at the company that brings you everything from Madden to Battlefield to The Sims.

...

EA's Montreal studio, which created the recent Army of Two: Devil's Cartel, appeared to be all but shut down earlier this year. EA has repeatedly declined to specify if that's the case, though widespread layoffs there and in the studio's mobile devision, do seem to have occurred.

EA has declined to confirm whether its Partners program has, as rumored last night and echoed by one of our sources, been shut down.

The company's CEO, John Riccitiello, stepped down last month.

EA's most high-profile projects on the horizon are this fall's DICE-developed Battlefield 4 and the BioWare-developed Dragon Age III. We have no indication of those internal studios being affected.

UPDATE: A source familiar with the situation at EA cast doubt on reports that 10 percent of the workforce has been laid off. We still don't have a clear picture of the extent of the layoffs, and don't expect to until possibly EA's earnings call early next month.

The source also said key titles that were being handled by EA Partners -- a publishing branch that handles externally-developed games -- are still on track, namely Insomniac Games' upcoming Fuse and the major title coming from Respawn Entertainment. Mobile-focused Chillingo is also continuing to work with independent developers to publish new titles. The EA Partners publishing label is rumored to have been discontinued.

Two sources with knowledge of the situation told Polygon that the layoffs, part of EA's extended and ongoing reorganization, now number in the hundreds. Officially, the company most recently listed 9,000 employees worldwide.

While EA's public statement doesn't include the number of people impacted, sources with knowledge of the company tell Polygon that the continuing layoffs are impacting "a lot" of people across nearly every part of the company. Some sections are losing a half dozen people, some are losing dozens, according to our source.

EA employees took to Twitter today to announce that EA studios PopCap Vancouver and Quicklime Studio have shut down. Quicklime employees tweeted that all staff have been laid off as a result of the studio closure.

Sources are telling us that 2,000 layoffs at EA are way off. 1,000 is high too. It's likely in the 100s.

FROM LARRY PROBST
As we begin the new fiscal year, I want to provide you with a brief update on some important changes to our organization. As Executive Chairman, my focus is to ensure EA is delivering high quality games and services to our consumers, while helping the executive team develop a FY14 operating plan that drives growth, rationalizes headcount and controls costs.

In recent weeks, the executive team has been tasked with evaluating every area of our business to establish a clear set of priorities, and a more efficient organizational structure. This process has led to some difficult decisions about the number of people and locations needed to achieve our goals.

The workforce reductions which we communicated in the last two weeks represent the majority of our planned personnel actions. We are extremely grateful for the contributions made by each of these individuals – they will be missed by their colleagues and friends at EA.

We are also taking action to streamline our organization, including changes in two key areas:

· Core marketing functions have been consolidated under our COO, Peter Moore. The combined group will bring together our Label marketing teams, Global Acquisition Marketing and Marketing Analytics into one multi-talented team under Todd Sitrin’s leadership. The development and marketing teams will continue to work as cohesive units, driving clear and consistent messaging and consumer engagement for each of our franchises.

· Origin will move into Frank Gibeau’s Labels organization. Andrew Wilson will take on the leadership of Origin, working with CJ Prober and the team to create more value and an enhanced entertainment experience for our consumers.

Change is sometimes difficult, but essential. The adjustments we are making will put us in the best position to build great games and services, deliver them more efficiently to consumers, and demonstrate to players around the world why they should spend their time with us.

EA is a great company, with talented and hard-working teams, a strong portfolio of products and an extremely bright future.

Thank you all for your dedication and commitment to our long term success!

So far:

  • Quicklime studios at EA Canada was just shuttered. All employees laid off. Mobile studio.
  • 50 Employees Laid Off At #EA India
  • Laid off around 20 staffers from Galway, Ireland.
  • EA cleans house at Montreal studio, most staff members laid off

And a crazy rumor floating around:

Possible leak that EA laid off 2000 employees. Keep an eye out for it.

Has there been any movement with their stock value over the last few days? If it's falling it might be worth a look at some point.

I've been involved in layoffs, I feel for all these people. In some cases it can be life changing for the better though and hopefully everyone lands on their feet.

"This just in: EA set to lay off 2,000 employees?!"

"EA laying off 2000 people - my source? I am the source :p Expect the news to hit the net soon."

"Notices were given this morning."

"Here ya go: Press Release http://www.ea.com/news/ea-organizational-update …
no numbers included, but trust me, 2000 lay offs is accurate"

Make of it what you will
Since that is an incredibly large number, I think I'll wait until someone like Gamasutra or Kotaku who has a large record on layoff reporting covers it.

Edit: Well then. That's horrendous.

It's an interesting state the industry is in when one of it's giants that's been able to get away with so much shit in the past is bleeding money and cutting it's losses.

Truly next gen is going to be an interesting one. Same old just might not cut it anymore.

2000? How many people do EA actually employ? I thought I read somewhere that about 4500 people work at Nintendo, can EA really have a lot more emplyees than Nintendo? No wonder they are loosing money.

Anyways, I seriously hope everybody affected will land on their feet, and that this will help EA return to profitability.

Well since they are going xbox exclusive they wont need as many programmers.....

But seriously I hope everyone lands on there feet. 2000 is a heck of a lot to randomly cut.

2,000? That is hard to believe, those are major layoffs then

Sucks for the hardworking people over there, regardless of ones stance on EA and the higher ups decisions on various things.

I'm no expert on this, but laying off that many people can only happen when some massive changes are expected to happen right?

This is the first time i've ever read a game story where my jaw really did drop. That number is...mind boggling. Hopefully we'll start to see developers on twitter posting open positions for those impacted.
