LTTP Black Mirror

I don't know how I missed this series when it came out but somehow I was in some weird bubble where Black Mirror was never mentioned by friends, family, or anyone really. I somehow managed to avoid any discussion about it.

So how did I discover it you ask? It was because of the Orville episode from last week Majority Rule which I enjoyed. I enjoyed the episode enough to click into the link here on GAF for the discussion thread to see if everyone agreed with my take on the episode but I saw it mentioned a few times that it was a lot like a Black Mirror episode. Intrigued I did a little research and was like A modern Twilight Zone type of show with mature themes? Oh fuck yes!

So on Halloween night my girlfriend and I smoked up and binge watched through the first season. I'll be watching more when she has a day off, she's doing the school and work thing, but I thought I would do little recaps of what I thought of each episode. Seeing as each season only has a few episodes I should be able to finish this fairly quickly. In fact we should be able to watch more tonight. Anyways so let me dive in with my reactions to the episodes.

The National Anthem- After watching the other two in Season 1 I see how this episode is a bit of a weird outlier from the general theme. I mean, it follows it to a point but not near as much of a tech focus and much more a human focused show. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The actors are top knotch and play their parts well. I was disquieted by parts and that can be hard to do at my highly cynical 38 years of age. That being said probably my least favorite episode of the first season. Not because it's bad, but because the other two were so good.

50 Million Merits- I would say this episode tripped my head the most and continues to this day. I think of this episode every time I have to sit through a 30 second ad on Youtube to get to the content I want. I have always considered myself an empath and this episode impacted my emotions the most. I didn't just see the anguish and the hopelessness of their existence but I felt the raw emotion just exuding from all these people. Watching the female leads breakdown from wannabe singer to mindless porn star through the male lead's eyes was soul rending and his sell out of his principles in the end leaves you a barren wasteland of emotion. You also feel you may very well have done the same thing as he did though to escape the current existence.

The Entire History of You- Fuck...

Just fuck...

I had been talking with my girlfriend about how one day we would have nanocomputers in our brain somehow and we would be able to save our memories to some sort of cloud storage and we could go back to them at any time so we can see, hear, smell, taste, and feel our past memories should we so choose.

So yeah, this episode nailed me pretty hard. I could see exactly how this situation would have played out in real life. How so many people could become obsessive over things we normally don't even notice in the moment. I really think this technology is coming one day and we will see scenes such as this play out in real life one day.I would say this episode is the best acted of the three and the pain is too real. The actors on this show really go hard on the method acting and it leaves little open festering wounds in your brain that you may not even realize are there until days later when something else that you didn't notice before hits you.

All in all fantastic. It was the show I didn't realize I wanted but now I want MORE MORE MORE.

Wouldn't mind other recommendations that are similar to this show.

It's on my backlog, only knew it existed seeing people talk about it here on GAF.
I'll watch it one day, this one and The Wire (probably not in this order though).

Easily one of my favorite shows. I put it off forever and finally watched it on the recommendation of my buddy.

So funny, I just came in here to mention that The Orville has been quenching my thirst during the Black Mirror off season. Just watched "Majority Rule" last night with my girlfriend and we drew parallels between it and the Black Mirror episode in question. I like that The Orville is like a mix of Black Mirror and Sliders (another personal favorite.) Never been a Star Trek fan so I can't speak to how it compares to Trek.

On topic, Black Mirror is the best. I'm a huge Twilight Zone fan and this show is very overdue for fans of this kind of show. Every episode really makes you think, and even the worst episodes are better than some of the best episodes of other popular shows.

I envy you having so many more episodes to watch fresh. Keep us posted on your journey.

Aside from Twilight Zone, there really is nothing like it. I tried a few episodes of "Dimension 404" on Hulu, but it just doesn't hold a candle to Black Mirror. Going back to the first paragraph, if you haven't seen the 90s show Sliders, I think you'll really like it based on everything you wrote in the first paragraph. A bit dated, but holds up very well overall and has many episodes that leave you thinking long after they've finished.

I couldn't binge watch, the episodes are too heavy. It's great that you just discovered it now though, you are in for quite a ride. Try to avoid spoilers or reviews because they will taint the experience.

San junipero is the greatest hour of TV I hav ever watched.

I read an interview that they are not against revisiting the san junipero universe with other stories. Makes sense, after 2 emmys.

Yeah, the GF and I both agreed that watching three episodes in a row was too much. So far I have managed to avoid everything.

I watched the first 2 episodes and stopped. I confess the series still hasn't gotten my attention as I thought it would.

I really need to watch The Waldo Moment. I skipped it because everyone said it was crap, but now people are praising it as predicting the rise of 45.

Haven't delved too far into the Netflix produced season (I managed 1.5 episodes) but I've watched the previous seasons. Although the series is thematically interesting in terms of the premise, I don't feel like it quite pulls it off when it comes to either the execution or finishing at times. There's a sledgehammer obviousness to Brooker's writing, that kind of gets a little irksome after a while versus the rest of the TV landscape and despite the novelty of the ideas, I've never yet felt the necessity to rewatch an episode once viewed.

You are in for a treat, OP. Nearly every episode is very good.

The only two I didn't care for were The Waldo Moment and Playtest (and the latter I was super excited for because I'm a fan of the subject matter but it just didn't deliver).

San Junipero is one of the best episodes of anything I've ever watched. Story, acting, cinematography, soundtrack...everything was near-perfect.

Very excited for the new season. David Slade is doing an episode, so is Jodie Foster.

I wasn't a fan of National Anthem at all because the required amount of suspension of disbelief was just too large for me. That said, almost all of the rest of the series is good to great. My personal faves are "Be Right Back, "San Junipero," and "White Christmas."
