Media Create Sales: Week 18, 2013 (Apr 29 - May 05)

They had hunting games on the PSP (and still do).

Because that was the only option back then.
It's been said the software like MH would just be glued to the device until people get tired of it.
I've seen the analysis that at MHP3 fiasco even other console games (not even in a same genre) are affected too.

No way. The PSP had Monster Hunter which cultivated the userbase for hunting-action games, which is why those games started appearing on the PSP. Once the Monster Hunter craze started, everyone wanted a piece of that pie.

I imagine the 3DS will get some of those games.

The PSPO and God Eater gained popularity because it was release at the "drought" of that genre between MHP2G and MHP3.
I'm guessing that now all Japanese third party devs are dying to find the release date of MH4, to make sure their release dates don't overlap with MH4 :)

All charts launch-aligned. All data from Media Create weekly releases.
Weekly numbers presented in logarithmic base 1,000 for clarity. In that case, zero units are represented by one unit.

Note, since this draws only from the top 10 it does not represent smaller titles.
e.g., software sales of zero are assumed if the console has no games in the top 10.

Tally of the number of titles for that platform in the top 20 for each week.
I can't find the top 20 for PS3's second week. It has been assumed as zero.

Feel free to criticize or point out mistakes.

I find it a little weird how the Monster Hunter "genre" hasn't made its way over to the 3DS. The market leader is there, but that's it.

God Eater 2 was in development before Monster Hunter moved to 3DS.
Soul Sacrifice is Sony published.

Toukiden was have been in development before Monster Hunter's platform was known, might have Sony backing the advertising (wasn't it announced at Gaming Heaven 2?), might have seen Monster Hunter 3G and 4 on 3DS and thought it would do well without such heavy competition.

There could be more games in this genre in the 3DS later, perhaps games that are in development now being announced.

Love the fact that Luigi is hanging on in teh top 10. I just hope he crwals all the way to a million mark. I know that is a tall oredr and all, but it sould happen to restore the right order in this universe.

i think it's a foregone conclusion it'll hit a million at this point. seems there's a new trinity in town.

Previous dual SKU titles did better on the PSP than the Vita, yeah? Don't think Toukiden (which based on GAF demo impressions isn't that hot anyways) is going to do shit for the Vita.

Also, OP:pW2, the first of this year's major PS3/Vita and PSP/Vita multiplats, had a PS3:Vita sales ratio above 4:1.

I expect a similar ratio from most of the other upcoming multiplats, though GE2 Vita might be able to sell a third to half of the PSP version if Sony makes an aggressive enough push for it.

I'm pretty sure Time Travelers did best on the Vita, outselling both the PSP and 3DS versions.

I think it's quite likely, actually. :p

Might not be in the charts when it happens though.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

If things continue like European charts indicates, we could have something similar here too, with Luigi and Lego beasting and Fire Emblem as the "not as powerful" third member of the trinity XD

Actually, no. Top 1000 by MC showed that 3DS was the best selling one eventually.

Yea, I'm starting to think Golden Week is being overhyped nowadays.

Well, to be fair, basically all Nintendo game saw a double-digit increase with respect to the previous week si Golden Week did have a good impact on overall sales.

I feel like we should be discussing whether or not the Japanese economy could even support the sales of a second system.

Honestly, if Luigi's Mansion will cross the million mark, for me it will be the most unexpected million seller since the second Inazuma Eleven. I thought it would have performed well, but in the 600-700k range at most.

3DS is continuing to do worse weekly compared to last year, that is concerning.

It doesn't matter at this point, 3DS still has the next numbered Monster Hunter and the next main Pokemon game. The system will do 4/4.5M this year with ease.

3DS is continuing to do worse weekly compared to last year, that is concerning.

It's not given the release schedule.
Summer is packed with software (like two relevant releases per week in June and July) + all Nintendo software like Mario & Luigi and Pokémon + Monster Hunter.

3DS software seems to be in a very good spot, not DS level of amazing but "core" gaming titles seem to be selling better. With Monster Hunter and Pokémon still coming, GBA which has already had a Pokémon at this point of its lifetime I think, is going to be left way behind. Overall that's decent enough for Nintendo especially once you factor in eShop and DLC revenues. It's definitely a very healthy platform for games to be developed on, which is after all the most important thing for japanese gamers.

Hardware (although tracking slightly lower than last year) seems to be the same story, it's settling in a nice place right in the middle of the DS and the GBA. I think that by the end of the year we will have a very clear idea of how far behind the DS it will end up being
and how far ahead of the PS2

I always thought of GREE more like a gaming-oriented Facebook that can be accessed via PCs and smartphones.

What I meant with my post was dedicated home and handheld consoles though.

Well, you have also to consider that traditional companies like Konami, Namco Bandai, Square Enix, etc. are doing a lot of money on GREE et similia.

So Wii + Wii U 2013 < 2012
Vita + PSP 2013 < 2012
PS3 and 3DS as well 2013 < 2012

Bad numbers overall.

And if this is Vita's showing for Golden Week I fear it will go down to 10k in no time again, especially with no games on the horizon (GT6 crossbuy Vita PS3 perhaps?).

It did the first week, but then disappeared off the charts. So who knows which sold best on the back end unless we have that data somewhere.

Also, Time Travelers sold badly enough on all platforms that its performance by platform isn't really a meaningful metric of anything.

Is GT even strong enough in Japan to save VITA? I mean suppose it gets announced for VITA in the upcoming GT Anniversary Announcement. Will it really move some units?

Anyone has the sales number in Japan/Worldwide for GT PSP?

Edit: By saving, i don't mean bringing it back to life. I am just talking about moving some units.

Gran Turismo performance in Japan was really disappointing. It sold just below 300k units (or 360k shipped), but it was released in 2009, when PSP was really on fire.

Worldwide it sold well, though. It did well in Europe, which is the primary territory for the franchise.

So will Sony fund another Soul Sacrifice game for Vita? With all the advertisements the game got, surely it must have costed Sony a lot for all?

Thanks for the numbers. I guess there is no single First Party Sony franchise, which is popular in Japan =/

I reckon that back in the PS1 era, Crash Bandicoot was a pretty big deal in Japan. I wonder if they can create a similar franchise in time for PS4 or they are just gonna piggy back on 3rd parties for success in Japan.

Until we know the WW numbers, we can't say it for sure. It did like 200-250k in Japan and debuted in 26th place in UK charts. We haven't got the US sales data yet but i don't have any hope for it making the Top 10.

The advertisements might have cost a lot(Mostly in Japan) but i don't think the development was expensive.

interesting question.

I would like to know what sony preojected for this title?

Its not gonna do anything in the west either.

Last known number for Soul Sacrifice is 169,813 units, though. Digital sales and blabla, but it's quite far from 250k.

Anyway, many years ago, Sony also had Arc the Lad that was almost a million seller. Parappa the Rapper and Minna no Golf were million sellers as well. Even My Summer Holiday was quite a big seller, around 400k units.

I know we know where the 3DS is up against the DS for the same period but how is the Vita tracking against the PSP?

If my memory isn't failing me, it's about 2M units behind which is pretty susbstantial considering the total sales number of both consoles in the same timeframe.

I think it's about 3M difference between DS and 3DS and 2M between 3DS and GBA respectively. The gap between the 3 will probably keep increasing with time.

edit : I went ahead and checked garaph (numbers as of early February if I'm not mistaken)

These all are Famitsu numbers.

In the case of DS vs 3DS software, I looked it up rapidly but I need somebody to double check it. Did the brain age games really move about 10M units in the time frame on the software graphs? (up until where the 3DS curve stops). Those games seem to be the main reason why there's such a gigantic difference between 3DS and DS software sales.

  • Brain age 2 - 4M
  • Brain age - 3M
  • English training - 1,5M
  • Big brain academy - 1,5M
  • General knowledge training - 1M

Thinking about Nintendo's strategy going forward like Nirolak mentioned in the past (improving attach rate ratio on handheld, eshop sales, focus on a more hardcore market willing to spend more by ways of DLC). I'd be very interested to know what the attach rate for ds software was among people that bought it mainly for the brain age games. I'm sure Nintendo has this kind of data, if only we had access to it. It would paint a much clearer view of how hard losing this particular market has hit them.

Looking at the Animal Crossing data, I think even if they lost some of the DS audience, DS definitely helped them expand some of their "core" games to a new audience.

Finally, call me crazy but I think PSV can bounce back. Possibilities are slim but I wouldn't count it completely out.

...This is a Japanese sales thread.

But any other sentence would've gone against his three-words-at-max reply policy.
