MS cancels Gore Verbinski's 'Matter'

I don't know if this thread needs a bump necessarily, but I can't leave this one off: DJ Pooh (screenwriter of Fridays, director of The Wash, also did punch-up writing on GTA San Andreas) was involved in a ghetto/hip-hop MMO somewhere around 2005. Sadly, 404 Gaming never got that one off the ground...

So here's the list we got up to:

  • Gore Verbinski's "Matter": CANCELED
  • Guillermo Del Toro's "InSane": CANCELED
  • Peter Jackson's "Halo": CANCELED
  • John Singleton's "Fear and Respect": CANCELED
  • Tony Scott's "Criminal": CANCELED
  • DJ Pooh "Urban MMO": CANCELED
  • Michael Bay & Digital Domain's "FPS Project": CANCELED(well, vaporware)
  • Steven Spielberg's "LMNO": CANCELED
  • Steven Spielberg's "Boom Blocks": 2 and out (but still, success!)
  • Steven Spielberg's "The Dig": Shipped
  • Steven Spielberg's "Medal of Honor" & Dreamworks Interactive: Shipped, software studio only lasted so long before Spielberg lost interest but certainly was a success
  • John Woo's "Stranglehold": Shipped
  • John Woo's "SEGA/Tiger Hill Project": CANCELED
  • John Woo's "ShadowClan": CANCELED
  • George A. Romeros "City of the Dead": CANCELED
  • The Wachowski's "Enter the Matrix / Matrix: Path of Neo": Shipped
  • John A. Davis "The Ant Bully": Shipped, and claims the rare distinction of the film director also directing the game
  • George Miller's "Happy Feet 2": Shipped
  • George Miller's "Mad Max: Fury Road Project": ??? (technically, it sounds like it was canceled and then restarted at Avalanche since his gaming side-studio KMM Interactive was partly started for this project)
  • Zach Snyder & EA Projects: ??? (Vaporware?)
  • J.J. Abrams & Valve Project: ???
  • George Lucas' LucasArts Software Library: True success (albeit George's hands-on time only went so far)

(Thanks Nerfgun, cuyahoga, Lijik & others for contibuting)

- Del Toro's "InSane" is NOT cancelled. http://www.officialplaystationmagaz...after-thq-dropped-it-says-guillermo-del-toro/

- If you are to have so many Spielberg entries, you should make the Wachowskis' "Enter The Matrix" and "The Matrix: Path of Neo" two separate entries as well.

- You are missing Del Toro's (and Mike Mignola's) "Hellboy: The Science of Evil". Apparently he worked very close with the devs. Shipped.

- Christopher Nolan's "Inception" is also presumed cancelled by now.

Not a shocker regarding the cancel, Microsoft abandoned the trademark December 21, 2012.

These projects always bite the dust, when they are announced I shut down and ignore it ...... E3 hits is what those things are about.

What others should be on the list?

Wasn't there a John Carpenter game that was out around Stranglehold? (Edit: Nope, Clive Barker's Jericho). Although Carpenter worked on Fear 3.

There was also the Saw game that the creators worked on right? Does that count?

Oh man. I had totally forgotten about that.

Has a video game ever really benefitted from having a film director involved? I guess... Boom Blox? Although who knows what Spielberg did.

I felt like my experience of MoHAA was the better for his involvement.

Jerry Bruckheimer Games, opened in 2007, never announced a game, and was confirmed dead this month.
