One of the Apple executives between Jobs and Jobs: "Apple haven't invented anything"

Apple doesn't have to literally invent the first phone to revolutionize the mobile phone market. Apple may not have been first to invent anything, but they are definitely highly innovative in any market they are in and are thus extremely successful despite high prices.

“Software is all zeroes and ones, after all. The quantity and order may vary, but that’s about it. Hardware is just protons, neutrons, electrons and photons buzzing around, nothing original. Apple didn’t ‘invent’ anything, the iPad is simply their variation, their interpretation of the well-known tablet recipe.”

So he is basically saying Apple didn't invent the universe? Ok?

If you wish to make an Apple iPad from scratch, you must first invent the universe.

This reminds me of the thread about Apple suing the grocery store with the A.pl name where people kept saying Apple was gonna sue God over that whole Adam and Eve thing.

how are you, B!TCH? How is your day going, B!ITCH?
No one invented anything!

Creativity and invention is all about how well you hide your sources of inspiration.

This picture? uhh I can explain really!
I don't really get the point of this article or thread. Everything is a Remix. Go watch it.

Wait, people still think Apple is about "innovation"?

Innovation is worth fuck all. Execution is everything, and that's where Apple excels.

Though suing the fuck out of their competitors in that regard is kind of ironic.

According to some definitions of the word, innovation IS about execution. Taking something that's already been invented and shaping it into a successful product.
Were motion controllers Nintendo's invention? Hell no. Even analog sticks were not. But the Wiimote is innovative to the extent that it worked and sparked interest on the market. Likewise with Apple's products.
So yeah, Apple haven't invented anything. In fact, most companies, organisations and individuals haven't and will not invent anything. But they're innovators.

[EDIT] Also, what Alfarif said. Watch it.

The inventor of the printing press went bankrupt. The thinking that invention leads to success was never really true anyway.

What are they doing with all their money though?

“The basic ingredients are the same,” Gassee writes while discussing the iPAQ as a predecessor to the iPad, “Software is all zeroes and ones, after all. The quantity and order may vary, but that’s about it. Hardware is just protons, neutrons, electrons and photons buzzing around, nothing original. Apple didn’t ‘invent’ anything, the iPad is simply their variation, their interpretation of the well-known tablet recipe.”
What the fuck is this stupid shit?

Seriously.

Way to shit on software and hardware engineers.

Where is that picture of different elements that Apple integrate into their own portfolio? I don't have problem with it as long as: they pay their dues (pay the original creator, hire them for the job, etc) and do a better job at re-creating the elements.

So some guy who got the sack in the 80's now has an opinion? So does everyone.

"Apple didn’t ‘invent’ anything, the iPad is simply their variation, their interpretation of the well-known tablet recipe.”

Good one! The 'well-known recipe' at the time was a load of shit. Giant blocks running Windows XP that never worked very well.

While his point may be true, I don't understand how that leads to questioning their role in the tech industry. Their role is the same as everyone's. To sell something.

If you wish to make an Apple iPad from scratch, you must first invent the universe.

Outstanding.

It's quite obvious, they're more about evolution. and changing something to make it appeal to the mass market.

Which makes the mass suings all the more ironic.

First one to file the patent wins. No wonder the guy was fired. He didn't know how the world works.

Apple is in less the invention business and more in the innovation and refinement business. And they have done a damn good job perfecting it.

no... at the lowest level of hardware abstraction...well there is no abstraction, theres the electronic pulse that is regulated by the cpu clock that travels thru the logic gates and the cpu kinda churns from (1 = on) to (0 = off). Thats all thats happening in all computers (cept maybe that cognitive chip ibm is working on). At the end of the day all software is scanned by a compiler , translated to assembler, then to object, then to binary ( 0, 1). So what he is probably implying is apple shouldn't be able to sue...of all companies samsung for ideas that are industry standard. He gave examples of how the tablet was just going to be the next form of a computing device when fabrication processes make sense to, as was the smartphone. Software is the same thing theres nothing ...new about the ios navigation ,home screen or well nothing. OS's are programming structures such as stacks operating within infinite loops. So yes its absurd they can sue for functionality, for "look" or design yeah ok but anything else is , a self defeating argument, the same idea applied to apple falls flat because they are using everyone else work. And that is how we move computer science forward. Theres a reason why Unix birthed , ATT UNIX, BSD UNIX, freebsd, solaris, linux, etc etc and freebsd gave us things like Next, which in turn was used in some capacity in OSX.

Prestel was the web before there was a web. HyperCard was a toy on an expensive boutique computer.
People can crap on Apple all they want, but the original Macintosh released in 1984 is an untouchably brilliant machine. To dismiss it as an expensive boutique computer says to me that you are either under the age of 25, ignorant, or an Amiga user.
