The reaction to this is going to be wayyyyy overboard, not matter how tiny the new restrictions are.

So I doubt he'll do my 'treat em like cars' idea, but any step is a good step.

I had a FB friend unfriend me over the guns/cars analogy. All I said was lets regulate guns like we do cars & drivers licenses.

That's pretty surprising given all the attacks lately. I suppose you can't change the mentality of people when the culture has been ingrained since the constitution was written

Most shootings are done by handguns anyway, most of which are purchased legally. There's no point in a specific brand of gun ban if the others are nearly ubiquitous.

Expanding background checks (and enforcing them more importantly, instead of letting people go ahead if the due diligence isn't complete in 72 hours) is a priority. Despite being common sense legislation it would make Obama one of the most hated Democrats in US history.

Good on Obama. If Congress won't do anything about America's gun problem, let him handle it himself.

Its not surprising.

If you truly want to bring gun violence down you don't even bother with assault weapons since they represent a fraction of a percent of death by guns.

No serious, self-respecting advocate of the 2nd amendment should be fine with the gun show loophole. There needs to be at least some minimum of accountability and background check for the sale of a gun. It's common god damn sense and a necessary step in reducing the availability of deadly weapons to people who should not have them.

It'll be fun to watch reactions, although - as with his immigration executive order - there's some uncertainty about whether it'll survive the inevitable judicial challenges.

I'll support this. Lets just hope a Republican doesn't become President, they would rid of that so fast it would make your head spin. And if Trump were to win by some miracle there would be even more guns in the US than now.

Since I'm anti gun, I'm going to have to vote for Hillary.

That wont save you just like having a concealed gun wont save you from getting shot by an angry white guy.
Why did you feel the need to mention the race? Are white guys the only demographic in America responsible for gun crime?

Oh thank God.

I wanted to spend my Christmas defending my progressive beliefs against the onslaught of the pro-gun conservative family I'm surrounded by. I did want to cause rifts and fights and possibly end up being ignored by my wife until New Years. I really did, please understand that.

Surrounding yourself with pro-gun family sounds like you want to be miserable either way, what can this hurt?

The law would be right in his specifically named powers. That's how executive orders work.
isn't that akin to saying you can make any choices as long as they are these?

I mean, I don't like guns, never held one, have no interest of owning one, but it just doesn't seem like a good way to do it. From an outside perspective, it almost seems knee-jerk.

Thanks Obama for an extra christmas bonus, my stock investments in Smith and Wesson (SWHC) and Ruger (RGR) have more than doubled this year alone, I'd expect the panic buying from the news of this report to double it again in the next 3 months.

I could go buy some new guns with the extra money!

Knee jerk would've been ramrodding a bill through Congress banning all firearms 20-30 years ago when the writing was on the wall in regards to mass shootings.

Since we've done little to fix issues this is more of a considered approach to reigning in the loopier assholes in our country who think unregistered firearm sales are a good thing.

When a conservative says,"Bad people will find a way to get guns regardless."

Dems should say, "Terrorists will find a way into the country regardless."

He's a secret member of the NRA and friend to the gun lobby.

That and let's make gun owners buy liability insurance. Again, exactly like cars.

yup, if your gun is used to harm someone else or gets accidentally discharged, your insurance should shell out to cover the damages to the victim

again, cars have more regulations than anything else, tied to registration, drivers license, auto insurance.

guns have it too easy

Have no choice, whether it's my family or my wife's, it's just the people we were born into and who love us and we love them back. Even though they're not smart, either very or somewhat racist, and knee jerk Republicans.

I'll get through it:

Obama is the best american president ever.

I don't necessarily agree with this, but he's magnitudes better than both most conservatives believe (I personally know a few people who rank him dead last, because they are ignorant) and many liberals believe (for not bringing in an age of socialist utopia.)

I think history will remember him quite favorably.

Great. Can't wait to hear my in-laws ranting about this over Christmas. They're already convinced he's going to declare martial law next year ahead of the election.

Who's history? History is created. He'll be remembered like a liberal Reagan, but the right will certainly continue to vilify him for years to come.

This will be funny. Even though some ridiculously high percentage of all Americans, including gun owners, seem to be in favor of closing these loopholes, a huge proportion of them will reverse course and scream bloody murder just because Obama is behind it.

God-emperor Obama, acting unilaterally, again.

LOL just kidding. This is great news. It's time for us to take action.

Well assault weapons aren't responsible for either most mass shooting deaths, or of the sort of domestic intentional and accidental deaths that add up. The issue in terms of weapons used to kill others is semi-auto handguns.

As for legal challenges—might as well make the NRA spend their money to defeat it. They're never going to compromise anyhow.

Yes, it's literally this because it's a specifically enumerated power in the Constitution.

If a Republican wins next November, can't they just as easily toss it in the garbage as well? Pretty much as soon as they get in?

In theory they can, although traditionally executive orders don't start rolling until after you've been in office for a while, and it's unlikely any future President would touch it due to how bad you'd look once the next shooting occurs due to someone getting a gun via the loophole

I'm for some gun regulation, but I don't much care for the use of executive orders as a workaround solution for a gridlocked Congress.

The last gun sanity laws failed with a MAJORITY in Congress. It died in procedure, not in votes. He's not going against the will of the people, here.

The spike in gun purchases over the next few days will be absolutely insane. Anything he does enact as an executive order will do next to nothing to stop gun violence though. America will always have mass shootings. Even if they put a 100% ban on all guns it's impossible to enforce and with the amount of guns already out in the population there's always going to be a way to get one illegally.

Presidents should have more powers IMO. Executive Order ahead.

Gun show loophole is stupid.
Selling weapons online is stupid.
Not having photo ID or background checks is stupid.

Heck, buying a car is more complicated than buying a gun

The gun show loophole is just private sales. The objection is that someone should be able to transfer a firearm (give or sell) to someone they know without having to get the government involved. Especially if it is a family member or friend that already has other guns. I don't think it's a huge deal, but that is the objection.

All online sales have to go through a firearms dealer anyway and involve a background check the same as if they were buying from a store.

Herr Obama taking our guns! Paving the way for the caliphate! Soon we'll all have barcodes on our neck! It's in the Bible, people! THE BEAST RISES!

I wish he could do more

Much like Obamacare, this will become the new rallying cry at the elections.

"I don't even know what he's planning, but it's probably taking all your guns - vote for me and everything he's planning right now I'll reverse, even if it makes sense, fucking vote for me because like fucking come on, he's a Muslim".
