Ster Kinekor Entertainment, the South African distributor of PlayStation in South Africa, has just announced that the PlayStation 4 has sold out around the country within 24 hours of going on sale at midnight on December 12th, 2013.

Ster Kinekor says that this makes the PS4 “the fastest selling console in Ster Kinekor Entertainment history,” according to the company’s most recent sales figures, which has in the past distributed the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PSP and PS Vita.

CEO of Ster Kinekor Entertainment, Mario Dos Santos said of the achievement:

“It has been an interesting road full of surprises this last year in the lead up to the PS4 announcement and we are ecstatic that we’ve broken a SKE record with these sales thanks to our loyal customers and stakeholder support. The demand continues to overwhelm supply, but we’re working extremely hard to get PS4 consoles into the hands of customers as quickly as possible.”

I don't know how much stock they allocated to SA but this is impressive nonetheless. It's fascinating how much global buzz Sony created with the PS4-

Connected world, domino effect.

I am still doubtful they are going to sell out in Asia if it's indeed hundred of thousands units allocated here. I'm not sure why, most people who want to get a PS4 in my country already PO back in Feb or E3 through Amazon or other online retailers.

I'm pretty sure the allocated stock includes preorders though. So we don't know how many PS4s will be on store shelves.

Apparently the CEO of Ster Kinekor entertainment acknowledged that there would not be enough supply to meet the initial demand. Pre-orders took priority. More stock coming.

Mario Dos Santos, CEO at SterKinekor Entertainment (distributor of PlayStation in South Africa), said that there will not be enough PlayStation 4 consoles in the country to satisfy the growing demand.

"In all honesty, there won’t be enough consoles available at launch on Friday. Most of the units we received was to satisfy pre-orders, but we will getting another supply drop just before Christmas,” Dos Santos told IT News Africa.

I can no longer trust anything that comes out of South Africa. There could be some random ass dude just faking this news.

People love the Xbone, it's selling 153,846K per country. More than three times as much!

I'm surprised people bought it, 6200 rand isn't nothing to sneeze at.

That's almost exactly what I payed for mine here in Sweden. 6200 rand = 3962 SEK. I payed 3890 SEK for mine, which is around what most people who pre-ordered early payed. Since then the demand has made the price go up to around 4400 SEK.

(Our VAT is 25% and is included in the price, don't know what it is in South Africa.)

25%? damn, i'm glad our sales tax is way less than that.

In socialist Sweden taxes pay you! Or something. But yeah, or sales tax is high as shit. Although the average for the EU is like 20%, so it's not all too outrageous in that sense. The US is really the exception out of most western countries, with its mostly very low sales taxes. And we don't really think about it the same way over here I think, as the VAT is always included in the price you see, it's not something that gets added on afterwards.

My ex girlfriend works at a very big national retail giant who i spoke to like 5 minutes ago and confirms the crazy demand for the thing.

Her store sold out their entire shipment of 20 consoles on Wednesday morning. That was like a few hours they had them and they all sold out before afternoon hit.

All other branches sold out as well. Waiting on new stock next week.

They are turning customers away because she says all they ever ask when the enter the store is for PS4's.

Im going to have a scoot around a few malls tomorrow to see if i can find any cause one of my friends is still driving around looking for one but can't find anything.

I didn't know we had any South African Gaffers.

The online retailer that I used when I was still living in SA (I'm in Spain at the moment), who are normally pretty cheap and competitive with their pricing, are taking pre-orders for R6,899. That's almost twice what my monthly salary was (working 45 hours a week) before I left 3 years ago. Crazy.

My pretty modest salary in Spain could buy me 3 every month.

Yeah, I guess the average monthly salery is significantly higher here in Sweden (and most of Europe, probably) than in SA, so in that sense that price is certainly high.

She works as a sales consultant at House & Home and they're going for R6299,00 currently.

Not sure how much that is in American dollars.

@Darkwing:

No there is no pre-order system at that retail chain. It comes in the store and leaves just as quickly lol.
She says she has never seen demand like this for any item they had in store before. Everyone is asking for PS4's.

A lot less countries means a higher average. What is it now? 48 countries to 13?

Agreed. I like how the Xbox One has a fully functional One Guide in the UK and works flawlessly with our 50hz TV standard.
