PS5 on an Ultrawide. So close to awesome.

Just sharing my experience here. I'm in the middle of a move and a bunch of reno and don't have a new TV yet. I've had both of these for a while but never really considered using them together until now, because I know the PS5 doesn't support most of what makes it great, I thought it would just be bad.

But for lack of something else to run it on, I tried it, and you know what? It's actually kinda close to awesome

I thought the stretching would bother me and I'd quickly go back to 16:9 with black bars, but in most gameplay it's not too noticeable, it's only when you see a face or a sphere like a planet that you remember the stretch, it's not like watching 4:3 content on a 16:9 TV. And on a game like Limbo I'd hardly notice at all, he's a little tubbier but that could have well been game design.

Honestly, thought this would be far worse, but it's just somewhat stretched, apart from that the monitor is faster than almost every TV I've used especially with the fastest response time setting in this Samsung monitor (I believe it does some BFI I can't see or notice a dimming on), it's bright, it's more colorful than the TCL 5 series I used to have, despite not having HDR it has more pop to it than most cheaper TVs that say they support it but just look worse. The field of view and curve this close up wraps close to my peripheral vision and almost makes larger TVs sitting further away look small after I've gotten used to playing like this.

It's actually such a surprisingly pleasant time that I really do wish Sony will go all the way and support what it has, it still looks sharp enough that I wouldn't complain much about it but supporting 1440p would be a bonus, supporting 21:9 would be huge, and supporting Freesync apart from just VRR (so monitors before HDMI 2.1 can also do it) would a very welcome bonus. 60fps feels very slick and fast on it but it supports higher plus freesync.

It's fun enough like this, but man would Sony adding support for those things make it amazing, pls Sony

I also said I wished they supported the PC ultrawide because it's so close to being a good experience but those three listed things fall short, if the PS5 supported them it would be amazing, but I'm seeing the potential there. The speed, color vibrance, brightness, they're still there despite the stretch.

Let me guess, you didn't even try to read before trying to join a pile on. Ah well, just my thoughts on it, I'm sure you won't be the last.

One time we were going to watch Casino and the 1080p download was going to slow so we dug out this old DVD of it, it was from near the start of them releasing DVDs, the horrible ones with the cardboard case and plastic locking clip on side. Special features were listed as: Chapter Select and "interactive menus".

We fired it in the DVD player and were greeted with possibility the worst/most comical transfer I've ever seen in my life. Straight away you could tell on the main menu there was something wrong with it generally, like it was way too pixelated even for a DVD being shown on a 1080p screen, it was like they used nearest neighbour to upscale from a much lower source resolution to 576p.

This is the best part though, the 2.39:1 aspect ratio presentation was in a 4:3 window, so on the 40" TV we were watching on it took up like 30% of the screen, in a literal letterbox shape in the centre of the screen. We skipped to a scene where it was a wide(ish)-shot of 3 or 4 people at the bar, you couldn't even tell which actor it was because the it was so pixelated, there faces were literally half the size of a postage stamp :messenger_tears_of_joy:

It had the double black bars as well, as in it was the 2:39:1 ratio within a 16:9 frame, within a 4:3 frame. So they wasted a shit ton of bitrate on rendering out some black bars and left even less for the actual image. Who ever made that DVD I swear they were a disgruntled employee or something.
 
My Dad bought a widescreen TV when they were still a relatively new thing. He always stretched 4:3 stuff to fill the screen.

It was fucking awful. All the women in movies looked thicc though.

There's a few modes I can go with, but I'd have to switch it from a PC style input to an AV input, I think the PC one does less processing and looks more natural. With the AV one I could maintain the aspect ratio, but it makes the darks look worse.

And I get it, when HDTV was new I used to hate when people stretched 4:3 content, but like I've written for most gameplay it doesn't seem to matter, when it comes to a cutscene video it does. I also think the cinema modes do a blend of zoom and stretch so it doesn't look so stretched. Would I watch TV or movies this way, heck no. But in hours of gameplay of Immortals, Destiny, Splitgate etc, for most gameplay I can mostly forget it, though cutscenes look bad.

The point of the thread was also a wish for Sony to support 1440p, ultrawide, and Freesync, but I think half won't bother reading before trying to pile on

One of the reasons I want the new consoles to be hacked so we can patch the games to display in ultrawide, since neither Sony or Ms have bothered to make it standard.

It's like fucking retarded people who post videos of them proudly showing their emulation setups and playing Mario 64 or other games in a 16:9 ratio and thinking everything is fine, and when you make them notice "lol I don't want black bars", saddest thing is some of them are actually YouTubers focused on retro gaming.

Consoles are made primarely for modern TVs which are 16:9. It's gonna be a long time until Sony and MS will care about ultra wide screen on their consoles. I mean, 120Hz modes started just recently and even that is not guaranteed in all games.

This is where it contradicts. A 2560x1440 image upscaled to 3440x1440 is streched per definition and they even say "upscaled" and right in the next sentence "no scaling" or "strechting weirdness"? Doesn't make any sense.

The only thing said firmware update offers, which it hadn't before, is 1440p resolution (16:9 mind you), because people with these monitors could only select 1080p in the past, giving the image a blurry look. True 21:9 support isn't there yet.

Streched images is not a viable option for me personally but each their own.

What are you not understanding? Upscaling a 2560x1440 image to 3440x1440 means it's stretching the image.

Anyway that "article" is just an ad by BenQ to sell monitors. Of course they're not going to say the new consoles are going to get stretched and look like shit on their ultra wide monitors.

Even BenQ too dumb to realize that a 1:1 pixel match isn't going to put black bars around the entire image. They would only be on the horizontal sides.

Like others have said get an OLED LG and you can put your PC into ultrawide mode youll get black borders but as its OLED it just turns the screen off, very cool, not great for sofa gaming as it makes everything alot smaller but if you get a 42" OLED and sit right infront of it I think its the same real estate as an ultrawide monitor?

ultrawides are dumb. My 48” monitor can do ultra wide at a resolution larger than a lot of dedicated ultra wides but why take away so much screen for a crappy strip of screen?

Because that's not how it works.

You're literally making the same argument that people who don't understand TVs made about widescreen DVDs having black bars on their 4x3 TVs.

That strip of screen has all the image of your full 16x9 image and more.

4:3 vs 16:9 was more about resolution. You couldn’t easily find a 4:3 tv that displayed real 1080p in 16:9 or large enough to be equal to a large 16:9z

That is not the case with large 4k 16:9 monitors displaying UW. It’s the same resolution.. the same size. Just less screen being used. You’ve been suckered to think other wise.

16x9 TVs weren't made because of resolution. They were made to reduce matting on widescreen content.

Its still stretched as I have a PS5 on the LG 45" OLED ultrawide and really wish it would support it natively so instead when I play console I just have letter boxes on each side making it about the size of a 36" ish monitor

Pretty happy with my ultrawide and 240 fps
