]I must be living on a different planet, what is the issue here?
Phil Spencer is meant to do what is best for Xbox and by locking down an exclusive he has done what is expected of him.
Squeenix are to ensure their product is profitable in order to ensure they get a return on their investment in making the game, they have obviously given exclusivity for financial gain.
What's the issue? Some customers can't get access to the game?
If given the opportunity, are people seriously advocating that Phil Spencer should have given up on the chance of locking down exclusivity? If they do, either they're being disingenuous or are incredibly naive.
I'm really surprised so many people are up in arms on this, when Sony recently did the EXACT same thing with Dark Souls 3: Battleborn. That game was supposed to come out for the XBox One and Vita consoles, but now it's PS4 exclusive and they even paid to put the Sony Entertainment Computers of America logo on it in the intro to the German trailer, which is a slap in the face to anyone who got banned for making a needless holocaust reference.
I'm just grateful that this definitive XBO version of Rise of the Tomb Raider will have native Kinect support so Speedy Blue Dude can import a snapshot of his face and imprint it on Lara's breast that he can see everytime he looks down at her cleavage to save the game.
I might be thinking of Trespasser.
Yes, MS has nothing to directly compete with Uncharted but Sony has nothing to directly compete with Halo, and neither company has anything to directly compete with Zelda.
There is a lot of outcry and fury at CD, SE and MS here, and understandably too: this is the most ridiculous moneyhat I've ever seen. However, this move does make sense for CD and SE. This is what this move achieves for CD and SE.
1. A big fat check from Microsoft for a couple of months of exclusivity.
2. Considerably raises the profile of the reboot Tomb Raider series to the same level as Uncharted, one of the most highly rated and best selling franchises of recent years. I enjoyed the the TR reboot but I would never place it in the same category as an uncharted, not even close, but this move has artificially done this - next year the talk leading up to Christmas is gonna be TR v Uncharted.
When TR is released after 3/6 months on PC and PS4, the profile of the game will be drastically improved, as will the sales. The question now is whether this TR v Uncharted dynamic would have occured anyway without the moneyhat, but I think console war arguments will help this.
From MS point of view it signifies a serious detriment in first party output. They had nothing to compete with Uncharted directly so they paid out the ass for something which will only be a temporary fix. Additionally the fact that people know it is timed exclusive will deter many from buying the X1, and the move itself has also promoted fury - the reddit post for this news is over 2000 comments and counting of furious TR fans.
It's more like the game is coming out for the PS4 first then the rest will follow. The game wasn't initially announced as PC/PS4/X1 and then somehow Sony suddenly snatched it from the side or something.
REDWOOD CITY, CA (June 9, 2014) Crystal Dynamics, a Square Enix studio, today announced its latest title in the critically acclaimed and award-winning Tomb Raider® series, Rise of the Tomb Raider ® . The game will redefine survival action in Holiday 2015.
In her first adventure, Lara Croft® was forged into a true survivor, but she glimpsed a deeper, secret world. In the next chapter of her journey, Lara must use her survival skills and wits, learn to trust new friends, and ultimately accept her destiny as the Tomb Raider.
With the power of the new generation, and our proprietary Foundation engine, our high octane action moments will be even more epic. Multiple locations around the world will be filled with exploration spaces that are some of the most beautifully hostile places on earth and over three times larger than we could achieve before, said Darrell Gallagher, Head of Product Development and Western Studios at Square Enix. Our digital actors will rival CG quality, and after hearing the cry from our fans loud and clear, we will put the tombs back into Tomb Raider, all in our gritty Survival-Action style.
Rise of the Tomb Raider builds upon the formula that made Tomb Raider a success, and features the return of Camilla Luddington as Lara Croft. Camilla will take character performance to new heights as Lara pushes herself beyond human limits and is confronted with what it means to become a hero. Once again, Crystal Dynamics is proud to have the award-winning author Rhianna Pratchett as a key member of the writing team, helping craft a story that delves into Laras inner turmoil and motivations in this critical second act of her journey.

Power of the Cloud plus DirectX12 will make sure this game runs at 1440p at 60 frames.strange move, could it be something to do with dx12?
TR2013 is one of the best games in the past few years for me. I double dipped on XONE and am currently playing through it again.

Hell add In the extra 10% given to developers from disabling Kinect and the DGPU hidden inside Kinect, and I'm sure this game will even hit 4K at 30 frames.
No but seriously guys, this game wouldn't be possible on PS4. PS4 only had 4.5 GBs dedicated to games. Xbox One has 5GBs PLUS 32 MBs of ESRAM. Sony's console couldn't handle it.
You guys are already taking the piss. Might as well join in on it.Funny guy

I agreed with most of what you said until your bias started to show in the last paragraph. This exclusive isn't a sign or anything as far as first party goes. Yes, MS has nothing to directly compete with Uncharted but Sony has nothing to directly compete with Halo, and neither company has anything to directly compete with Zelda. The point is moot. MS just wanted to wipe a piece off of Sony's board for Christmas 2015.
Once again, the timed exclusive is meant to win Christmas 2015. If you're a gamer who likes what Xbox is offering during that time and want the next Tomb Raider under the Christmas tree then the decision becomes easier for the consumer to make not harder.
Gamers are an entitled bunch. I know that's considered a no-no thing to say around here but it's true. The fact is Square Enix needs to throw it's weight behind Tomb Raider, they need a sustainable franchise that could mean merchandise and movies ECT. The thing is though they can't over leverage themselves to do it. This is a great deal for thm as you said. Gamers can stomp their feet, cry and make angry YouTube rants all they like but this is a great deal to make for the franchise and gamers tbh.
Actually, it is probably no different. Microsoft are desperately trying to market this as a big exclusive as the notion of third party exclusive games has been utterly torn apart. Hence the exceptionally carefully worded and not deviated from line on the game: it is exclusive to Xbox One & Holiday 2015. Rather than "this game will not appear on any other platform".
They've misjudged the mood though, thinking this was going to be like their early 360 days "winning exclusives from Sony" patch (which were not wins, merely third party devs adding a new platform to their portfolio).
What people want to see from Microsoft is funding and developing of their portfolio beyond Forza, Fable, Halo, Gears and "Remedy Game". They seem unwilling. Stories of getting their bought in studios to can new IP's in favour of servicing the existing ones don't help their cause.

If this ever comes up when someone Google searches my username I'll probably cry. Hahaha.
Because now they can spend more time on a single version, potentially improving performance. Perhaps Microsoft can put some of their own software engineers on the job to help with the optimisation. Multiplayer at launch wouldn't be fragmented, since everyone is on the same system, which means that everyone with that game could play with anyone else with that game. They don't have to be subjected to comparisons to other platforms at launch, trying to discourage people from their potential only available option. They also aren't running the risk any more that another platform holder snags the title away as a (timed) exclusive. How are timed exclusives good? Regardless of the console you own. It makes no odds whether it's multiplat or not
It's not about going toe to toe on certain titles, it is about demonstrating that you have studios making games and are investing in games. Microsoft are demonstrating that they won't move beyond their core franchises (which is incredibly risky) and that they would rather secure a window on an established title than fund their own.
I just love some of the theories in this thread:
1) RoTR is delayed in PS4 because CD are afraid of UC4
2) RoTR is delayed in PS4 because CD wants it to be like UC4.
well i agree that they need to build their studios. but the problem is that doesn't happen overnight. they invested in Black Tusk Studios but that developer hasn't produce anything that will release within the next year so they were given an already established ip to work on.
Microsoft knows they need to make Xbone enticing to buy over the ps4 and they need to make that happen fast. That's why they're making big deals like this. while sony knows they need to build their indie portfolio which is what they lack last gen so they are making small deals like they're doing right now.
Can't you change the title to:
Rise of the Tomb Raider Xbox exclusive (rumored to be timed) for Holiday 2015
or something like that?
Many people here are treating the rumor like a fact - which it is not.
What is ridiculous about such theories? Are you denying that TR and CD will be brought into the same league as Uncharted and ND with the inevitable and endless TR v Uncharted (tied up with the XOne v PS4) debate all next year,
Post away. Nothing to hide.
it's funny because you said that like I'm somehow suppose to be afraid of what I post on twitter. And oh no, anything but my correspondences with Tim Dog! Yea.. I wasn't aware talking with him was a crime. Considering we mostly just talk about and enjoy xbox, I find it curious that these correspondences are apparently so damning that I'm suppose to fear having them posted here. Maybe you should instead be asking yourself why exactly being a happy Xbox One owner would be such a big problem for me here.
Square can't afford to throw away sales that they know are way bigger outside the exclusive box they climbed into.i honestly think this is going to turn out like splinter cell conviction and not be timed like everyone is latching onto.

I always thought that the Remedy titles were Uncharted's nearest competitor. Less about "in the style of", more about being the big story driven third person shooter thing.
... I don't know how you figure that. Right now there's simply a lot of angry Tomb Raider fans... mostly on PC and PS4.
How does it help SE to not sell them the game? If anything that will kill pre-orders.
The last Tomb Raider is at about 7 mil life-time sales.
I think it will take a big hit on the sequel. It will be limited to the console with far less install-base (up against Halo 5...)... and quickly forgotten about by PS4 fans with Uncharted and jaded PC fans who will wait for sales.
MS are crazy, why TR ?. Maybe they tried to get bigger and better, but this is all they could secure. Will people actually pick up a system for modern day Tomb Raider ? 10 to 12 hours and your done. Well atleast their trying, but investing in and announcing a brand new 1st party exclusive would turn more heads.. like a Fallout clone or something.
Yeah, there is absolutely no way SE let it go for that cheap. Simple calculation:Consider the money spent for this deal. Let's say it was 10 million (probably way higher).
If you saw the conference yesterday it's clear that they are invested beyond their core franchises. The first party landscape is pretty barren for both Sony and MS in 2014, MS is actually looking better in this regard. MS needs to see a real turn around by Christmas 2015 so they are making moves well in advance.
And? It will only create buzz around Xbone version, when PC/PS versions come out the buzz will be gone killing the sales in PS/PC platforms.
Gamers care about games, corporations care about money. The world keeps on turning.

MS isn't "buying a game"... that's the same misconception those promoting this are saying. MS is paying a company to not release a game on a competitor (and PC...).
As I mentioned the equivalent would be if Sony turned around and paid Rocksteady to not release Arkham Knight on Xbox One.
When it comes out on XOne it will be considered by Xbox fans as an uncharted killer. When it comes out on ps4 and PC it will be considered an uncharted tier action game because of all the debate. This move is going to drastically improve the reputation and perceived quality of the franchise.
To a certain extent, I think MS and CD must have known that this announcement would have caused some unhappiness in the PS and PC camps. But I think they really thought that any unhappiness would be muted, or at the very least drowned out by positive responses relating to crystallization (hurhur) of the release window, likelihood of optimisation on one platform etc.
