Sonic the Hedgehog games --- your review scores

I am playing through sonic1-4 on sonic jam right now, and am amazed how how well these games hold up today..

anyways, just looking for some peoples personal reviews out of 1-10, on the sonic's..

heres the list:

Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Sonic & Knuckles
Sonic Spinball
Sonic CD
Knuckles Chaotix
Sonic Jam
Sonic R
Sonic 3d Blast (SS or SG ver.)
Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure 2
Sonic Heroes
Sonic Advance
Sonic Advance 2
Sonic Advance 3

I left out some side games...

I was going to post my scores, but then noticed they were all basically in the 8-9 range, with a couple in the 6's and a couple 10/10's... so i'd rather just see what other people think of the sonic series...

i dont think sonic got anybetter than the sonic1-4 on genesis and sonic CD, however i did love sonic R, sonic adventure1-2, etcetc.

Sonic the Hedgehog (8/10) - The beginning of the series was a strong start damaged only by inconsistant level design. Certain levels never appealed to me.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (10/10) - THE best in the series IMO. Incredible level design, tons of variety, the perfect look, great music, and tons of fun.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (9/10) - Loved it, but felt that the change in game flow hurt it just a bit. Fewer zones than the previous game, but they were much longer...which was not something I preferred.

Sonic & Knuckles (9/10) - I pretty much feel the same about this one, though I didn't care for the Sandopolis or Lava Reef zones too terribly much. Combined with Sonic 3, though...this was killer.

Sonic Spinball (6/10) - Low framerate and less than flawless gameplay. Was somewhat fun and had some cool tunes, but it really couldn't hang.

Sonic CD (8/10) - Short levels that failed to provide speed. It was notable for the massive variety of stages (as a result of time travel) and incredible music. This is the most overhyped game in the series, IMO.

Knuckles Chaotix (5/10) - BLAND stage design with a neat gameplay mechanic makes for a totally average game.

Sonic Jam (8/10) - Nice collection of games with plenty of bonus features.

Sonic R (3/10) - Pretty horrible IMO. The controls were perhaps the largest shortcoming.

Sonic 3d Blast (SS or SG ver.) (4/10) - DECENT game, but didn't really feel too much like Sonic and couldn't match up in terms of level design and tight controls.

Sonic Adventure (7/10) - GREAT for its day (IMO), but it has aged VERY badly.

Sonic Adventure 2 (9/10) - Very solid score based gameplay that was damaged only by the requirement to play through some very poor search stages. Thankfully, most of my playtime did not involve those.

Sonic Heroes (8/10) - I ended up enjoying this in the end, but it took some time to pull me in. Some weak stage designs really hurt the overall package, but I enjoyed the overall experience.

Sonic Advance (6/10) - No Sonic physics and a "Sonic on SNES" feel. Didn't appeal to me...

Sonic Advance 2 (7/10) - Fast as hell, which made it somewhat enjoyable, plus interesting boss fights hurt by the remaining lack of "Sonic physics" and linear level design.

Sonic the Hedgehog
- Still has some great levels but the bosses were weak. 4/5
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
-Best in the series, I loved all the stages especially casino night zone, plus the bosses were cool. 5/5
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
-The stages were too large and cumbersome, bosses were really well made though... it felt like half a game at times. 3/5
Sonic & Knuckles
-By itself I enjoyed it slightly more then sonic 3 , still no sonic 2 though. 4/5
*sonic 3 + knuckles - sonic 2's equal - 5/5
Sonic Spinball
-Clunky , not a good game but I loved sonic so much at the time I got it for christmas. 2.5/5
Sonic CD
-it had an awesome concept but I only played the mildly broken PC version.. it felt like sonic 1 actually. 4/5
Knuckles Chaotix
-Bleagh, the first truly bad game in the sonic series, sonic is about speed first and formost but not entirely... Chaotix broke that with its damn link system. 2/5
Sonic Jam
-Never played it but isn't it just a compilation pack ?
Sonic R
- Terrible, the worst sonic game ever made . 0/5
Sonic 3d Blast (SS or SG ver.)
- clunky isometric platformer with little to do with sonic , just not my thing. 2.5/5
Sonic Adventure
-For the time I loved it but in hindsight the non sonic /tails levels were a bit too slow and the camera wasn't so good. 3.5/5
Sonic Adventure 2
- somehow the camera got worse, the non sonic stages became less fun .. and the nifty adventure mode was nixed for a somewhat bastardized version of old school sonic. Sonic team should be ashamed for this mess of a game. 2/5
Sonic Heroes
- I only ever played a demo but that was enough. Kind of in the middle quality wise compared to sonic adventure 1 and 2. DEMO- 2.5/5
Sonic Advance
- Speed is nice but when all you have to do is hold the Dpad to the right and wait for the stage to end something is wrong. Also who designed these stages ? 2.5/5
Sonic Advance 2
- The bosses were really well made but the stages were atrocious, especially sky canyon zone. It's like the 2D equivalent to sonic adventures design flaws... 2/5
Sonic Advance 3
- I didn't really try this one for very long so I haven't formed an opinion really.

Huh? You mean THE Sonic Adventure 2? The one that Sega published on Dreamcast and later GameCube? Or is this some Japan-only Saturn game with the same name?

Yes. As noted above, the only major flaw was the searching stages. The actual Sonic/Shadow challenges (grades) were EXTREMELY fun to obtain and required lots of accuracy and skill. It brought back the feeling of older Sonic games where one would try to maintain the "higher" path while maximizing the score. I absolutely had a blast with the game and feel it deserves a straight up 9.

I know the game is hated, but I really loved it. I DID NOT like the Knuckles/Rouge stages, however...but they were only a very small bit of my total playtime. I mostly focused on grabbing A ranks on all Sonic/Shadow stages (with each stage having 5 possible challenges).

Sonic the Hedgehog - Good start to the series....nothing really else to say...7/10

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - Probably the best 2D iteration of the series...8/10

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 - eh, not as good as the previous two IMO ... 6/10

Sonic CD - The music in the Japanese version was fantastic...8/10

Sonic 3d Blast (SS or SG ver.) - What a bleh game...can't even call it Sonic... 4/10

Sonic Adventure - Amazing for its time. I still think it captured Sonic perfectly in 3D...9/10

Sonic Adventure 2 - Ok, a third of the game gets a nine while the rest gets a big zero...3/10

Sonic Heroes - They didn't even try. Boring stages, horribly buggy, some of the worst boss fights ever.... 2/10

Sonic Advance
Sonic Advance 2
Sonic Advance 3
-all the Advance games are about the same to me, solid sequels of a formula that hasn't aged too well since 1990...6.5/10

No no no, the Advance games are nowhere near as well designed as the older Genesis titles. Level design, controls, physics, visuals, sound, etc. The Genesis games stand FAAARRRR above the GBA titles...

The Advance games control more like the Gamegear Sonic titles than anything else.

I'll leave out what I haven't played extensively...

8/10 Sonic the Hedgehog
9/10 Sonic the Hedgehog 2
9/10 Sonic the Hedgehog 3
10/10 Sonic 3 & Knuckles
7/10 Sonic CD
5/10 Knuckles Chaotix
9/10 Sonic Jam
7/10 Sonic R
4/10 Sonic 3d Blast (SS or SG ver.)
6/10 Sonic Adventure
2/10 Sonic Adventure 2

Advance 3 is basically Sonic 3 with more partners. And the other two play nothing like GG games; more like Sonic 2 with more pits in the stages

i like how it was said that the sonic advance games feel like the super nintendo versions of sonic.. thats how i see them too, they just dont feel, play or look like the traditional sonic i love.

SONIC R gets so much hate here.. i love that game.

Out of 10 -

Sonic the Hedgehog - 10
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - 9
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 - 8
Sonic & Knuckles - 10
Sonic Spinball - N/A
Sonic CD - N/A
Knuckles Chaotix - N/A
Sonic Jam - Why bother, it's just a collection of previous Sonic Titles...
Sonic R - N/A
Sonic 3d Blast (SS or SG ver.) - 6
Sonic Adventure - 9
Sonic Adventure 2 - 8
Sonic Heroes - 3
Sonic Advance - 4
Sonic Advance 2 - 4
Sonic Advance 3 - 4

The Advance Sonics are crap. They're everything the Megadrive Sonics aren't (ie: shit). And the formula hasn't aged, I still enjoy the Megadrive Sonics immensely (still the best 2d platformers ever), much more than the shitty Mario 2d platformers.

So yeah. I was clearly exaggerating with my reply, but I've never really liked the Sonic games. Sonic 1 was brand new and the shine hadn't worn off yet; Sonic 2 was polished, but then it all just dropped off, either featuring no new ideas or simply being an awful idea to begin with.

Sega's commercial was fantastic - they made Sonic look amazing next to Super Mario World. Of course, Super Mario World was by far the better game in basically every way.

the scores here mostly prove something:

the genesis sonics were the best sonics ever, even if we all pretty muched like the adventure games, they werent as good as teh genesis ones..

sonic team, doing a 2d sonic.. call it "sonic ultimate" or something, the end all 2d sonic, and it controled and played just like the genesis games.. could be amazing. too bad we'll never see it.. they seem more than happy letting nips handle the sonic advance games.. and the advance games sell well enough...

and i dont see how anyone could say the sonic games aged poorly, they are still just as fun today as they were back then, and i think part of the reason is that they could be played differently by different gamers.. either run and gun, or slower and more precise/exploration style.. i do a little bit of both..

i thought sonic 3/4 played alot different than 2.. the level styles were completely differen,t but still close enough that it was natural to play...

Of course, except for the whole entertainment, graphics, music, and gameplay factors. So in conclusion, any 2d Megadrive Sonic game > the borefest that was Super Mario World. In my opinion of course. ;)

SMW was a too-long, more boring version on Mario 3...

People actually take EITHER of the Chris Kohlers' opinions seriously?

Wow.
There's another?

Mario World beat the crap out of Sonic. More levels, much deeper gameplay, lots of different things to do, lots of hidden secrets, far better boss battles, etc.

Genesis Sonics were great. Platformer games for people who don't like platformers (like me). Out of the games I played:

Sonic 1 (Great-for-its-time Deco design and wonderful music and level design. Love every bit of it except for the Sonic sprite, 9/10)

Sonic 2 (the artwork and Sonic sprite is better and it had a great finish and the DBZ Super Saiyan ripoff. I didn't like the 3d race level all that much, it's just a 'see what Genesis can do' SFX gimmick, Metropolis Zone dragged on, 8/10)

Sonic 3 (boring, plodding levels, bonus game was an unfun SFX gimmick, crappy ending, I really hated this game, 6/10)

S&K (it made up for the bleh Sonic 3, can't walk a mile in S1 or S2's shoes, but very solid with good music and decent final boss ending, S3&K is the real deal Holyfield, 8/10)

Sonic Spinball (A fun game. I think the game would have worked if the 'Sonic physics' were in place, but they weren't, 6/10)

Sonic 3D Blast (never cared enough to play the game through, so no comment)

Sonic Jam (Uh it's just a compilation of Genesis Sonics and multimedia, it's a good disc and the 3D Sonic level was nice. Sonic Team should have added in Sonic CD, which I still haven't played, in Sonic Jam while they still had the chance, 8/10)

Sonic Adventure [the game feels very glitchy and experimental, almost like a PSOne/Saturn platformer, and the levels are pretty shallow without too many multiple paths. I didn't really care for the 'human' part of the game either (Sonic lives on planet Moebius, who said it was OK for Sonic to interact with humans/earthlings?). The minigames and alternate characters were cool though, because they were pretty fun as a diversion, and they stayed away from the Sonic part of the game. If Sonic Adv 1 got a RE-style remake, revamping the level design (but keeping the themes and the excellent music), axeing the overworld hub part of the game (I didn't like or hate it, but it didn't have a place in a Sonic game imo) and mixing in a little bit of Sonic Adv. 2-type gameplay, we'd have the best Sonic game since the first imo. As it is, 7/10, PS. The storyline was great]

Sonic 2 [best 3D Sonic game (gameplay is ultra-fast, levels are filled with depth and replayability), until you're forced to play as other crappy characters and crappy minigames. I didn't mind Knuckles/Rouge's fetch quests all that much, but I hated the Tails/Robotnik bits SOO FRIKKEN BAD. No love for the Kart racing garbage either. If the game was structured like SA1 where you can choose to play stupid side-quests and minigames away from the core Sonic/Shadow gameplay, I would have handed it a higher score. As it is, 5/10, PS. The storyline was ass]

I really wish Sonic Xtreme would have gotten finished... :( But was happy with Sonic 3d Blast, Sonic R and Sonic Jam.. Sonic X-Treme did look pretty cool though...

good call on Sonic Pocket Adventure... thats an amazing game, and Sonic 2 being my favorite basically, I love Pocket Adventure equally, as its basically just Sonic 2 Remix.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles seems to be the favorite for best sonic game... i may play through sonic 3/knuckles in sonic jam, all combined.. should be interesting.
