Sony "This will be the most brutal God of War you've played"

Cannot wait to go on this brutal journey through the Norse mythology. They've not really shown us any of the Gods / main bad guys yet, so I wonder if we will get kill Gods like Odin, Thor and Loki (not the Marvel ones)

Caring and protecting Kratos? I don't think dev.team will be able to make that happen.

Maybe not, but its an admirable goal to aim for. If they can make people feel some empathy for Kratos it'd be quite an achievement considering how abhorrent and selfish the majority of his actions have been. I think Corey said there was nothing wrong with Kratos the murderer as a character, they don't all have to have redeeming features etc, but if they could convince you there were more layers and more to his character then it'd be mission accomplished.

Curious to see how they want to top that. IMO that was already going too far.

Maybe what he's trying to say is that the game's world will be more mature? God of War is kinda like action figures smashing against each other. Like something a 13 year-old would come up with. So maybe this will be more brutal in a tragic sense. Like the kid dying or something. I could see that happening.

Hope so. God of War being brutal is one of the defining features of God of War. While I'm definitely interested in this and the direction it's going, I'm also concerned whether it is really still a god of war, and whether they're just going to make it a last of us in Norse mythology.

Suppose they have to say that since we haven't seen a drop of blood in the trailers, and fans start to ask questions. But "brutal" is not the same as "gore", and right now by the trailers I can see the same level of violence as a Marvel/Disney movie.

Brutal is fine, but there were some scenes in 3 that were more sadistic than just plain violent, and I hope they remove that shit from this cause it made me hate that game.

I dunno, in Souls games, to give a different example, encounters usually have a lower enemy count and people don't complain.

I don't think this means we won't fight a bunch of scrubs at once. But you won't get an encounter with 3 Minotaurs and 5 foot Soldiers like in previous games, where it wasn't a problem due to the fixed camera, the long range of your weapons and how fast Kratos was able to traverse long distances rolling.

You`re right, it`s not about the enemy count. I shouldn`t have quoted both sentences because for me the interesting words were "personal" and "visceral". This and the trailers remind me very much of Hellblade; it looks and sounds very similar. Which, again, might be a good thing.

Otherwise, this sounds like one'd expect, considering excess grittiness and brutality seems to be the selling point for all media these days.

"Visceral" combat. Haven't heard this before. Or "strategic". You mean tactical, at best?

Seriously, these PR statements are such a clusterfuck. But I guess they make their audience clear: teenagers.

Yeah it not about enemy count but it's about diffrent enemies both big and small attacking u. In last game, especially in harder difficulty u have to figure it out which enemy u need to take out first.

If i was a 12-16 year old that statement would have made me very excited.

basically, this. can a sales pitch get any emptier? :) ...
Quoting the actual comment from the interview since people seem content to post based on a headline:

"This is a brutal world. The team said this is going to be the most brutal God of War you've played. This is when gods and monsters walked the lands. It's going to be pretty brutal."

Well that's 100% false. Also lol @ equating the trailers with Marvel/Disney violence. Come on.

There are very violent scenes in norse mythology, like Odin sacrificing his eye to gain wisdom, Fenrir (I believe that was the name of the wolf) biting the hand of the god, leaving him with one arm less, dead heroes in Valhalla fight all day and get healed by Thor's hammer and Rangarok (I expect Rangarok to be the setting for the third game of the norse god of war, though).
If we are talking about heartbreaking scenes, then I expect some scenes like that with Kratos and the kid, maybe there will be some heartbreaking scenes with his mother, too.

I think I’m out then. I was very interested by the new direction they looked to be taking, but the ultra gore was a real turnoff in previous games and if it’s siimilar then I’ll just skip it unfortunately.

How can you be turned off by such absurdly comedic, cartoony violence in the PS2 God of War games?

It's hilarious if anything.

GoW3 was already brutal to the point of self-parody, I don't know if being more brutal is the right answer here (I mean it could be, but I'm personally not sure).

Press f to pay respects.

"Guys, I keep pressing f, but I think the game is on a loop or something because Kratos won't stop paying his respects."

Well even the extended comment mentions how brutal the game will be, there's nothing to misunderstand here.

This may come as a shock to you, but some people are turned off by extensive brutality and yes, may even consider it childish.

No offense, but complaining about extensive brutality in a God of War game is like complaining about unsimulated sex in a pornographic movie. You know what you're getting into before you start playing.

Man i have huge reservations for this game, I think the kid sucks, the combat looks much slower and now they confirm it's less about 1 v many but more about 1 v 1, eh...

I'm willing it to be good since I love the series.

It would be quite an achievement. I just feel that adding more brutality, gore and harshness to his story is not going to make it happen. But I would like to be wrong in this case.

It's weird doing an interview of directly the "Vice President of Marketing". I mean obviously he's going to say things like that.

Not that anyone else from the team being interviewed wouldn't say the game is awesome (sure, it's always PR) but at least when they interview Barlog you know he's talking about the game through their creative process and what they try to achieve etc.

When I see a guy who's "VP of Marketing" and he tells me "the MOST BRUTAL GOD OF WAR!!" I just feel like he's giving me the punchlines he focus tested last week.

I was hoping for a more mature game instead of just juvenile gore.
Oh well. :/
But the series was always about gore, from very beginning. That's like complaining about Mortal Kombat for having gore. If u have issue with gore then u shouldn't play this type of games.

" it’s no more one versus many, but more focused on one versus one or versus two. It’s more personal, strategic and visceral. "

NOOOOO

This is not my God of War. Pass.

Brutal as in the environment and difficulty is how I took that comment to mean after actually listening to the conversation.

Not sure what your second sentence is going on about when it comes to this series if you find extensive violence 'childish'.

Oh, ok, didn´t see the ogre drop a little red blood, my bad. Still he could have ripped his eye or do something cool, but he just... covered him with a log.

lmao

he smashed his head with the log, covering the floor with blood and ogre brain matter

I could post some gifs of The Last of Us if you want.

I'm not too excited for the game but the idea that you can't be "brutal" and mature at the same time is silly. I could name a thousand pieces of media with gorey as fuck brutal scenes that are still "mature."
