Sony to offer Unity for Playstation to all licensed developers for free

2+2=5

The Amiga Brotherhood
I don't think it's the same thing. Unity for Playstation Mobile was a means for developers to publish to Vita without additional cost, but it didn't include Unity Pro as a development suite. This new agreement provides Unity Pro for all Playstation platforms for free to any licensed Playstation developer.

Ok but whoever made a Unity game on pc(or anywhere else i guess), so who had a license, could already port the game on Vita IIRC, so it's more a PS4 deal imo.

Hahahahahaha no.

That's Unity PC pricing which remains as-is, consoles were/are ENTIRELY different. Though Sony's been making arrangements for PS devs for some time now, they are pretty good about helping people put good content on their platforms.

I was under the assumption that you needed to buy Unity Pro and additionally pay for every SKU on want to publish on the platform (for PS3/4/Vita being a couple of 10k$).

So my understanding was that only Unity Pro is free from now on!? That's just how I read it.

Tokyo, September 17, 2014 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) and Unity Technologies, provider of the Unity multi-platform engine and development tools, having originally entered into a strategic partnership in March, 2013 to provide Unity for PlayStation®, today announced that they have extended and strengthened that strategic partnership to offer Unity Pro for PlayStation® for PlayStation®4, PlayStation®3 and PlayStation®Vita at no additional cost to all PlayStation licensed developers.

I think this is different from what's on the Wii U & Xbox One

GET GOING WITH UNITY FOR CONSOLES

The Unity engine can deploy your content to an incredible range of console platforms, and console deployment is often available free of charge.

However, you can only use Unity to deploy to consoles once you’ve been approved by the platform-holder in question, and, more often than not, you’ll need access to specialist hardware (devkits). Here’s a handy guide to get you started.

XBOX ONE

Microsoft’s ID@Xbox program for XBox One is completely free and gives you the same hardware and network access as any other developer.

Registered developers will also receive a free Unity for Xbox One license. Note that the Unity XBox One build is currently in closed beta.

XBOX 360

Anyone wishing to deploy to Xbox 360 must sign up via an approved publisher such as Microsoft Studios.

UNITY PRO FOR PLAYSTATION® 4, PLAYSTATION® 3 AND PLAYSTATION® VITA

If you are registered as a Sony-accredited developer you can get a Unity Pro for PlayStation® license, to develop for PlayStation®4, PlayStation®3 PlayStation®Vita at no additional cost. If you are interested in developing games with Unity Pro for PlayStation platforms, get in touch with your PlayStation representative to discuss becoming an approved developer.

PLAYSTATION® MOBILE

Port or deploy to PlayStation® Vita with our PSM build option. It’s available free of charge, there’s no devkit and no NDA, and the registration process is far simpler than for PS3, PS4 or PSVita. Just apply to Sony, and you can download and get going.

WII-U

If you’re registered with Nintendo, you can use Unity to deploy to Wii-U free of charge.

So in the past you had to pay for the Unity Pro license plus $1500 to publish on each Sony/Nintendo/MS console, and now you don't need to pay for the Pro license/publishing fees if you are an authorized dev?

But if you want to get a Unity Pro and publish on PC/iOS/Mac/Android/Ouya how much do you need to pay?

All the big companies are not charging for Unity Pro now (licensed devs of course), but you still have to pay for it when doing PC/Mac/linux development.

Thanks. Pretty great news for indies on consoles.

The fewer barriers, the better. This will hopefully allow them to really flourish as the 'B' tier developers of this gen and beyond.

As long as it offers free upgrade to Unity 5 then it's fantastic since I'm not sure if the publishing addons are transferred automatically from version to version and Unity 4 is simply ways behind UE4 when it comes to console development. Hopefully we'll get the chance to try it out eventually, but currently I have to say that the transfer to UE4 for bigger projects has been worth it even with a lot of the features still being in development and some major bugs in the Editor.

Wow, that's awesome. I wonder how many game submissions they're getting and how many they're turning down. PSN isn't exactly swamped with indie Unity games yet, but no doubt they will face the App Store / Early Access situation as development gets easier.

Neither Sony, Nintendo, or MS will be able to go against Google and Apple in terms of games content and sales till they solve the legacy problems.

with google and apple, you buy new system, the old games still work and sometimes in better performance.

you buy a friggin PS4 you can't play the games you bought from the previous system.

I would swallow it if it was just the big games you can't play. but you can't even play the indies. and that is a problem.

If there is a Xbox one successor and a PS5, expect them to be alot similar to this generation specs wise, abiet more powerful.

As for Nintendo, they need to worry about having a proper account system way before they tackle this problem. Honestly, with their focus on novelty, I never see this happening.

PS Vita developers already had Unity for free, unless they needed Unity Pro:

http://blogs.unity3d.com/2014/06/20/unity-for-playstationmobile-full-release/

Of course... Windows only, SCE's tools do not support Mac... This really helped them gain traction with Android developers and iOS ones with PlayStation Mobile...

PSM is for hobbyist developers. Take a look at the storefront and you'll see that. No one really makes money over there. I don't mean that as a setup to a joke about no one making money on Vita games either.

Professional games get native Vita releases. This Unity deal is for professional studios.

Great news. Hopefully this should help indies develop across many platforms cheaply and efficiently and thus have their games do better
