The Lineup

I'm momentarily interrupting your regularly-scheduled TV series lineup to remind everyone that the most important film in any of our lifetimes finally released on DVD in Japan on July 19: THE MYSTICAL LAWS (Shinpi no Hou).

According to the film's own site:

Only one film this summer is brave enough to deliver the TRUTH about China's demonic plot to enslave mankind to the masses who have rejected the light of Buddha in favor of godless debauchpfffffffffahfhahahahah I can't do this. Here's the real reason that there's any hype whatsoever around this:

The Mystical Laws is the sixth installment in a series of animated propaganda movies produced by Happy Science (Kofuku no Kagaku), a crazy Japanese cult formed and run by Ookawa Ryuhou, some dude who, fresh out of business school in the 80s, realized that a quick way to make cash would be to start a religion by claiming to be the reincarnation of Buddha. He now has followers in several countries, his own political party in Japan, and has authored hundreds of book-length tracts elaborating on the teachings of Happy Science and the insanely convoluted alternate history of the universe central to the religion. He's basically the Japanese L. Ron Hubbard.

Basically, according to Happy Science, the universe is overseen by the god El Cantare, who experimented with life on different planets for billions of years before settling for the humans on Earth. The teachings of Happy Science are conveniently universal among most major world religions, and so it teaches that all major religious figures in history were simply emissaries spreading El Cantare's enlightenment. The religion has a ridiculously complex afterlife and reincarnation system whereby people are judged on how much of their potential they achieved in life, and so prosperity, innovation, and a mishmash of pro-democratic/anti-communist ideology are emphasized alongside the mysticism. The various purported incarnations of Buddha's soul receive the utmost reverence because well, that's how Ookawa gussies up his divine credentials and rakes in the yenz.

Sound cultish enough yet? Well, Happy Science's six animated films go off the fucking deep end in their unabashed portrayal of the most insane aspects of the cult. There are Incan lizard men, flying space flowers, an afterlife just for growing spirit pumpkins, flying crystal pyramid elevators, dead inventors spouting Buddhist ideology, plant-men on Venus, space Nazis, demons in baseball stadiums, airships, crying elephants, magical Native Americans, and even weirder. They're objectively bad movies with horrible messages, but the absolute sincerity and reverence with which the material is presented turn them into comedy gold and make them perfect for MST3K-style riffing. If you're at all interested in tasting the TRUTH for yourself, simply use the following viewing order and enjoy the crazy.

The dialogue is thoughtful and naturalistic, the characters are written intelligently and exude humanity, it's fully of lovely background art with smart, deliberate scene framing, and the narrative is a refreshing use of magical realism. It's lively, entertaining, and touching. Watch it.

Yet after dealing with the obnoxious exiled tengu Akadama, falling for the beautiful human mystic Benten, and fighting a midair duel with their nemeses the Ebisugawa clan over the Daimonji, the Shimogamos are pushed to their limits!
What will become of this close-knit family as the delicious truth behind their father's unfortunate-yet-scrumptious demise becomes clear!?

I actually read the OP for once, and it reminded me that I recently saw someone's review of Short Peace. It's rather negative.

In fact, Short Peace itself is the perfect evolution of the COOL JAPAN lie, complete with that O that takes the shape of the Hinomaru in the movie’s poster. It’s lots of half-baked Japonica imagery, presented poorly, and devoid of meaning. I will admit that Buki yo Saraba has an appropriately perverse, cruel, and absurd Ootomo-ish ending (and I probably would have enjoyed the whole thing more if I had slept the previous night) but aside from that one short, this movie has nothing to say, and you probably shouldn’t waste your time with it.
