I broke the stick on my TheC64 joystick after like a month… You know I’m a fan of TheC64. But the joystick is of incredibly low quality compared to something like Tac-2 or Wico Command Control. Or used to be at least, I don’t know if they changed the design after the founders batch I got.
Supposedly, the microswitch version (packaged with TheC64 full-size, and also sold separately) is superior to the original in both durability and responsiveness.
And I really don’t see any problem with usability or understand what you don’t like about it, it’s a joystick and the most logical control method ever, actually took me forever to get used to a Dpad
Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with a proper joystick. The reason why I feel that a joypad would be better for modern usability is because it would allow you to have more easily accessible buttons.
Many old games only supported a single button function on the joystick. Even most 2-button joysticks at the time had both buttons perform the same function. Porting games from arcades or consoles meant that the user would also have to use the keyboard. You might have to slap the space bar for a second function, maybe Enter for a third function, and so on. A joypad with several easily accessible buttons could allow you to remap the controls so that all game functions are at your fingertips, with no need to reach for the keyboard. It's a modern convenience that many newer emulators offer.
