The state of NeoGAF

Pull a what (or who?)? But to answer your... question (?) I actually would like to know, because I kind of prefer to know some facts other than those fitting a narration before making my mind up.
It's the same person. The admin and a pedophile mod jacked off on pics of someone's girlfriend that he sent them for a PSP.

I'm no one to tell you what to you, but what I can try and say is to be very wary of hive-mind places like this, they can be detrimental to yourself and society, this used to be a gaming forum that became some sort of far left discussion and enforcement center, and ultimately is what killed it... That is of course, how I see it as someone on the outside looking in, I hope we can one day go back to our passion, GAMING and be excellent to each other once more.

Yeah, OT and leftists are what killed the site, and not the forum owner acting so awful that his staff bailed on him.

This "get back to gaming" bullshit is like clockwork.

I guess this will be my "good-bye" post, too. I know some of you don't care at all, so feel free to scroll right on past.

I've been on NeoGAF for well over a decade. The first few years as a lurker, and then eventually as a member. I was never one to post much, but I can safely say I spent the better part of 2 hours on this site each and every day (well, unless I was out of town for business or vacation). Hell, I even remember posting on here the very day my wife gave birth to our firstborn. I had a thread open with funny pics/gifs, and it served as a great distraction for her in the hours before going into labor.

The point is, GAF has been a part of me for a long time now. Not as long as others, but longer still than some. I can honestly say I've made friendships here. The community - at least, the parts that I was mostly engaged in - were friendly and filled with interesting discussion. I never participated much in OT, though I was a regular lurker in the CFB threads (D-III fan, so not much to talk about with all the FBS guys).

Good times were had. And I will miss them.

If there was a thread talking about RPGs (and their various sub-genres), you can bet I was there. Maybe not posting all the time, but there nonetheless. I will miss familiar names and, yes, even discussions about whether or not Dark Souls constitutes a JRPG (it does not - COME AT ME!). Seriously though, thank you. This was a home away from home. I will always have fond memories of it.

But now it's time to move on. I will be out there. I've started posting a bit on a rival board sl&ent, and I will almost assuredly check out resetera and the opencritic project. Username will most likely reflect my PSN username (dunno why I used something different on GAF). It's NeoFoxTrot. Feel free to get in touch, whether we spoke often or not.

A special goodbye to:

-Animal Crossing community (still looking to sell turnips!). Perhaps we'll meet again in AC Mobile.
-WoW OT. Hardly ever posted in there, but I still play on MG (Alliance) and WrA (Horde). Blizzcon won't be the same without the OT community chiming in on their hype levels.
-Trails/Kiseki GAF. My import copy of Sen III just arrived! I was looking forward to hacking my way through the language barrier and asking many questions of you. :(

Take it easy, GAF. It's been a hell of a ride.

Longtime lurker here.

I'm really looking forward to Oct 27. Since I'm becoming a dad in February this might be my last high profile Mario release where I have time to play the game a lot in a week!

Hope then I can go back to check gaf a few times a day for news and not waste my time reading posts about someone leaving.

I dunno if people troll saying they are here for video games but I am coming here and probably still will for video game related stuff posted by the community. Neogaf has been the way I read gaming related news only. Hard to keep up with a demanding job and a family in the making.

Thanks for all the hard work!

Looking forward for your great video game related topics and discussions.

I may even start to post more regularly since I'm sure I won't be playing much comes February. Lol

Ignore the accusations of sexual actions.

Stay for the video games.

Freeeee speech.

Why not just come out and say you want to be rude without consequence?

My word, you sure love being the poster child for all that was wrong with GAF. Well, not all, clearly. But the fact that you paint anyone who disagrees with you or questions you with accusations like that is emblematic of the 'hive mind' / attack mob people are talking about.

I mean, you do realize you've somehow managed to turn the phrase 'free speech' into some sort of indicator that anyone who uses it must be the enemy? Do you realize how sick that is?

Yes, some small percentage of people hide behind free speech to say terrible things. Yes, that sucks. But that should never be your base assumption, a way to shut anyone you disagree with down. Let people out themselves as idiots and boors - because while it sucks, it is also a beautiful thing because it ensures you can open your mouth too, be it to criticize the president, or whatever. You want to live in a magical world where people can only say things you already agree with... whereas I don't mind living in a world where people freely speak their mind, even if I don't always like hearing it.

Been following this story since it happened. I honestly don't know what to think. All I know is I don't believe this place will ever be the same again which is a shame because I really enjoyed the community on here.

I don't see why it can't. Things have been blown completely out of proportion in my honest opinion. If members want to pass judgement on Evilore and he's complicated relationship with Leupp I guess they're free to, there's no coming back from that now, but it shouldn't affect discussion of other topics moving forward. Continuing to be part of this community does not inherently suggest you're compromising your moral stance on this particular subject matter. Things can and will go back to normal if Evilore doesn't give up on the community which has clearly given up on him. Members who want to leave will and those who will stay will stay. The most disappointing aspect of all of this has to be the abuse some moderators got which really doesn't make sense. There has barely been any rational discussions regarding this whole thing.

Itt people who havent been on gaf more than a few weeks come to tell the old folks " lets get back to gaming "
Meanwhile every member who has been here for a decade making kick-ass OTs and putting in the effort to make this site awesome is leaving.

These Juniors think they're gonna make neogaf great again. GL

The sexual assault allegations fall into a tricky he-said-she-said battle. Not immediately taking the victim's side might seem callous, but unless there's more evidence presented or other people to corroborate the story, then I'm holding out to pass a final judgment on that story.

... That is until I saw that post above.

That stuff right there is damning.

Regardless of how you feel about the sexual assault allegations that got this ball rolling in the first place, whether you #BelieveHer or not, people, take a look at this and decide if you want to be a part of the community with a figure head like this. There are plenty of alternative places to discuss gaming, etc. You don't need to be part of one with such a toxic person at the helm.

newborns sleep a lot and when you put them down they don't go anywhere. so you'll have some good gaming time for 6 months or so.

Even getting away from the disgusting stuff, EL has always been a cunt.

The guy banned people for disagreeing that he could beat Bruce Lee in a fight and threw a temper tantrum when someone made the official Pillars of Eternity thread before him.

You want to see some humor? look at the Save our SIFTD thread where he basically shits all over Shane Satterfield for not running a business properly.

Existing subs are being auto-rebilled? Was this disclosed to the subscribers ahead of time? It doesn't appear to be mentioned anywhere on the Patreon. It's certainly relevant information for anyone considering a pledge, since these separate subs are not included in the public-facing amounts toward the stated Patreon goals:

The bolded section is misleading if you're maintaining existing subscriptions separate to the Patreon.

Look, if you're just running a website and offering content/services for $x straightforwardly, you don't have any responsibility to be transparent about it. People will just decide it's worth it and will pay for it or won't. No one is being misled or exploited, and it's all good regardless of how successful you end up being or where the money goes, since it has no bearing on the value proposition involved.

But if you're running a "PLEASE SAVE OUR SITE, LOYAL USERS" campaign with an ongoing fundraiser through Patreon, and asking your community to pledge at least $8000/month and upwards of $750/month each, indefinitely, to help keep SIFTD operational, this is no longer a straightforward transaction; it's an emotional plea to give as much to the "cause" as someone can, leveraging the idea of losing the platform they care about to extract more money per user than you were before.

You have a small contingent of loyal users, and I guarantee most of them aren't wealthy. There's an ethical responsibility now that you didn't have before, and you don't appear to be fulfilling it. Do better, or shut down and move on.

Maybe he should take his own advice...

"It's not in my job description" is not something a failing business owner ever gets to say. You need to know what you need to know when you're running a business. If you don't have the correct knowledge base and skillset to perform your job in such a way that your website stays afloat, that's on you to address.

You don't know how your own website works. You clearly didn't start this with a sustainable business plan or get VC money behind it. Why are you running it? What are you bringing to the table here? Why should people give you money to continue running it? Because you put in your own time and money to launch it and people should feel sympathetic because you gambled with your personal finances and took an L?

Sounds like you need a wake-up call, man. That's not how the world works.

You need $8000/month in additional revenue to break even? No one knows what your website is. The "drive-by" constructive feedback being given is "drive-by" because you have no audience. Why is your operational overhead so high? My mods tell me you have an office/studio in LA? These offices are crucial to your small-time largely unknown startup website producing podcast content and doing news aggregation?

Yeesh. I guess we're reaching a point where NeoGAF will be...

What are you looking for? DNA evidence?

How about a sentence that starts with "I know that it's the same person because ..."? Or in other words, I want to know why you think it's the same person and not someone else using the same nickname. For all I know he might have said so here, but I guess that did not happen, so please enlighten me why you are sure that it's him.

Twelve+ year poster here... figured I'd give my two cents.

As a poster in the 35-40 age range, I've seen a lot in my days of community bulletin boards and forums - both as a poster and a moderator at other locations. I was a member of a thriving online community twenty damn years ago that had its own exodus and things were never the same. I was even part of the moderation team that might have been negatively responsible for that, unfortunately. I was much younger. Fortunately I've learned a thing or two since.
I've seen online communities broken due to buy-outs, administrative egos going out of control, and just straight up closing due to funding issues or sinking irrelevancy. I've seen site owners in actual tears begging for money because they mismanaged things so poorly in the online spectrum that they found themselves not even being able to pay their rent any more. I've seen bitter jealousy turn to sabotage with forum posters joining together to actively burn someone's livelihood down for no other reason than 'revenge' for bannings or differing opinions. All of these places were not nearly as large as NeoGAF.

I've known seemingly good people in power positions that did scummy things. I've known people that had reputations for being scummy grow and change for the better. The internet is a big place, filled with literally every personality type and combination of types a person can probably imagine.
Communities grow, die, but sometimes they rise from the ashes. One of the forums I referenced above? It somehow crawled through its own controversies and still exists today. It's a shell of what it was, but it's still there. People I knew from twenty years ago are still there. They seem happy. It was the ownership and the handful of posters that weathered the storm that kept it alive. Tomorrow will always come on the internet... presumably. :p I certainly don't think this is 'the end' of NeoGAF... not unless Tyler decides to kill it... but there is certainly a lingering change in the air. That was unavoidable.

I don't know who Tyler Malka is.
Over the years I've put things together based on posts, just like any member big or small around here, but 'good', 'bad'... I don't know. I never presume to know, either. Out of opinions formed based on posts, I can really only be sure of two facts: I do know this is his site. Those in the trenches posting on a regular basis and the hard working mods keeping the trash out might make this place, but his name is above the door. I do know that he is a person with a certain amount of 'internet celebrity' fame/baggage (whichever one might perceive it) which puts him in a position of potential public scrutiny the majority of us could never relate to or understand. It comes with the territory. Oh, that is not an excuse for bad behavior or poor decisions by annnnnny stretch, but it should also be taken into consideration in discussion. I ask myself: "How would I react if a widely spread, nasty story about me came out that I heavily disputed... but the majority of the people didn't want to hear it based on stupid fucking mistakes I made when I was younger?" Sounds like a nightmare of a situation - and it's a harrowing trend I've seen popping up more and more in the realm of social media. The court of public opinion is a powerful thing and despite all of my desperate optimism in this pessimistic world right now, many situations on the internet make it very hard for me not to buy into the reality of 'Guilty Until Proven Innocent'.

For Tyler, that might be determined legally in time. If the situation is being misrepresented, he has the right to defend his reputation, as anyone would. Unfortunately for him, at least for the time being, the swift gavel of internet justice has already shattered the block. It's up to him - and the members of this community that decide to stay - to determine any potential survival of NeoGAF. What form that might take? Time will tell.

Godspeed to those that are leaving. Some of you will be truly missed. Good luck to those that stay. Try to keep this community healthy and just.

Good post.

Also, when this initially came to light and GAF went under, I was sad I lost the community I was a part of because of what happened with the owner. I said this in another topic, and at the risk of sounding flippant, I do quite enjoy Woody Allen movies, Phil Spector music & John Lennon albums, despite allegations made against them. This situation is even further removed, I feel, as I viewed GAF as a community, obviously, rather than one man. The quoted post puts it well with the "name above the door" idiom, however.

I don't think I'd call it such, but I'd rather have an "echo chamber" than an unmoderated shitfest.

Yeah so I read in the new parents gaf thread. But I hardly find time now or when I do I lack the motivation because so much stuff is on my mind. I mean I bought curtains for the first time in my life.lol

Guess when the baby is here I'll just read even more about games because it's such a huge hobby for me and play even less than now already.

Reading about it is like 90 percent the fun for me now. And the hype trains that are e3.

Evilore just shot himself in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Neogaf culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is an imageboard where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over on Neogaf, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the Neogaf's audience, after hearing about this, is not going to want to visit Neogaf ever again, nor will they purchase any of Evilore's ads. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Evilore has alienated an entire userbase with this move.

Evilore, publicly apologize and resign from NeoGAF or you can kiss your business goodbye.

There are plenty of other places, GAF isn't really special or unique because of the site itself. Another will pop up in it's place if it eventually dies.

I've been here for the better part of ten years. Maybe more? I remember the year both Gaborn and Scorcho died, that fucking sucked. I once spent a NYE on tinygaf when I was alone, depressed, and borderline alcoholic, and people there managed to make me feel better. I really love this place.

I sincerely hope, for everyone involved, that you'll be able to conclusively prove you've done nothing wrong, in spite of your conceited "statement". I can even understand that the site's management is the least of your issues right now. Which is the reason why you should have stepped down, or sideways, at least until your name was cleared. Handed GAF over to someone the community could trust, and salvaged something meaningful for a lot of people, that you contributed to create.

It's really sad to see that you've chosen to sacrifice the forum instead to get some respite. Because that's what it is, let's be honest. Blaming the "current political climate" is just disingenuous, transparent bullshit. Moreover, it's clear that it won't work. Handicapping the forum won't make you any less notorious.

Anyways, thanks for the ride everyone. I hope to catch up with you all someplace else.

The relationship thing after the fact gave me enough doubt to believe that it's possible she exaggerated or distorted the events, but the new stuff coming to light about EL's past character definitely makes it possible that they happened exactly as described. At this point staying on as owner just makes for bad PR, GAF will maintain a tarnished reputation where people will question the owner and 'did he or didn't he?' cloud of doubt will follow GAF everywhere. If doing a hard reset and going forward is the best way to proceed, it sounds like it'd be better PR if EL just stepped down (with his millions anyway) so that the site could get a proper revival. Just my thoughts. And this is regardless of whether he really did or not, which we will probably never have a definite conclusion of unless one side fesses up.

I have this feeling a lot people are praying for Neogaf to fail, I don't understand this mentality. I don't even understand how the shower situation is sexual assault unless we have redefined what assault is. Plus this 4chan looking pics passing around as proof of history is even more laughable.

The conclusion would be I might be posting more once the newborn is here since I won't be playing games. But still read all day about games. Especially on commutes and work breaks.

I don't base my actions on recent happenings. I do however base my actions on how my life is.

Peeps going hard with that narrative, they are transparent as fuck. Funny to see them painting everyone that leaves as the "leftist toxic SWJs".
Breh half of the people I know that left barely ever touched Off-Topic in any capacity and were just regular gaming side posters. There are people with 10 year old accounts that never posted anything "political" that are leaving. People are fed up with Evilore shitty actions and no longer want be part of this website.

The Gaf community is already gone.
