The Russo Brothers are taking a breather from the Marvel world to adapt cult classic film The Warriors as a one-hour drama with Paramount TV and Hulu. The brothers will re-imagine Walter Hill’s iconic 1979 film, itself an adaptation of Richard Price’s classic novel of the same name. Their take will honor the original film while adding its own unique brand of grit, pulp, sex and violence. The Russo brothers will team with writer Frank Baldwin on the series. There is no director attached yet.

‘Captain Power’ Recharges With Reboot Series, Heads To Comic-Con

The 1980s sci-fi TV series Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future is coming back from the past, with original co-creator Gary Goddard among those behind a reboot plan for the Canada-U.S. space drama that spanned 22 episodes in syndication. The new series is titled Phoenix Rising and is in active development from Goddard’s Goddard Film Group and ex-Syfy execs Thomas Vitale and Craig Engler’s newly formed Planet X Productions.

The plan is to raise awareness for Phoenix Rising this week at Comic-Con. Goddard Film Group partners Roger Lay Jr and Eric Carnagey are also exec producing. Todd Masters’ MastersFX will create the effects for the new series.

CBS Buys Procedural From Chris Murphey And Matthew Gross As Put Pilot

In a competitive situation with multiple bidders, Hunch, a light hourlong procedural from Chris Murphey (The Karate Kid) and Matthew Gross, has landed at CBS with a put pilot commitment with penalty.

A co-production between EuropaCorp TV Studios and CBS Television Studios, Hunch centers on a LAPD detective who begrudgingly teams up with a celebrity psychic who, unfortunately, is also his ex-wife.

The project reunites Murphey and Gross, who were co-showrunners on ABC’s Body of Proof. Murphey penned the script, which the two developed on spec, and will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Gross (Taken, Dirty Sexy Money, Daybreak) will executive produce with EuropaCorp’s Edouard de Vesinne and Thomas Anargyros.

Alon Abouthoul (London Has Fallen) and Amin Joseph (Baywatch) have booked series regular roles on FX’s Snowfall, John Singleton’s 1980s cocaine-epidemic drama pilot. Co-created and executive produced by the Boyz N The Hood director Singleton and Erick Amadio, and directed by El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the pilot has been undergoing a revamp.

Not notable casting news here, but good to see the project is still moving along.

- Deadline: John le Carré’s ‘The Spy Who Came In From The Cold’ To Be Developed As Limited Series By Paramount TV & Ink Factory

Paramount TV and The Night Manager producers The Ink Factory are teaming to develop a limited series based on another John le Carré novel, the New York Times bestselling espionage tale The Spy Who Came in From The Cold. Oscar-winning scribe Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) is attached to write the adaptation.

This is the first TV series treatment for the book, that was the basis for the 1965 Paramount feature film starring Richard Burton. Le Carré, who served as a writer along with Paul Dehn on the 1965 film, will also executive produce. The Ink Factory will finance and produce in association with Paramount TV. Paramount Worldwide Television Licensing & Distribution will handle worldwide distribution of the series outside of the UK.

The Ink Factory’s Stephen Cornwell and Simon Cornwell will executive produce, with Character 7’s Stephen Garrett. They most recently collaborated on the acclaimed series The Night Manager, for the BBC and AMC. Starring Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie, The Night Manager, also adapted from a John le Carré novel, earned 12 Emmy nominations last week, including Outstanding Limited Series, Lead Actor for Hiddleston and Supporting Actor and Actress for Laurie and Olivia Coleman, and Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series for Susanne Bier.

“On the heels of The Night Manager, we look forward to developing a further le Carré novel for a global television audience,” said Simon Cornwell of The Ink Factory. “’The Spy Who Came in From the Cold’ is one of the greatest espionage stories ever told. Simon Beaufoy is one of the most brilliant screenwriters of our generation. We are thrilled to be embarking on this extraordinary creative journey in collaboration with them, as well as with Paramount Television and Character 7.”

BBC One announces landmark drama adaptation of Les Misérables by Andrew Davies

BBC Worldwide will distribute the series, with Weinstein Television distributing in U.S. and China.
Charlotte Moore continues her commitment to ambitious, high quality event drama on BBC One with the announcement of an adaptation of Les Misérables by the multi award-winning screenwriter Andrew Davies.

Announced today, a new six-part adaptation of Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, a 19th century classic and widely regarded as one of the greatest books ever written. This is a BBC Studios and Lookout Point co-production for BBC One in association with Weinstein Television.

Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content, says: “Andrew Davies' extraordinary skill for adaptation will bring the world-famous Les Misérables into powerful focus for a modern audience, with a multi-layered re-telling of Victor Hugo's masterpiece. Andrew Davis is a terrific writer, just listing a brief run of his credits: the original House of Cards, that version of Pride and Prejudice, and (of course) the recent War & Peace adaption.

Update on the Buckaroo Banzai series that apparently is happening

Kevin Smith’s TV version of cult flick The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension looks like it has found a home with Amazon. MGM and the streaming service are close to locking a deal that will see the Mallrats director bring the 1984 sci-fi adventure comedy to the small screens sometime in the next year, I hear.

Is there really an audience for this?

Six Feet Under creator Alan Ball is returning to the family drama genre with a new project, which has received a series order by HBO.

Created by Ball, the untitled series focuses on a contemporary multi-racial family: a philosophy professor, his lawyer wife, their three adopted children from Somalia, Vietnam and Colombia, and their sole biological child. This seemingly perfect, progressive family is in actuality harboring deep rifts. Then, one of the children begins to see things others cannot. Is it mental illness? Or something else? The series is a tragicomic meditation on the complicated forces at work on us all in America today.

- THR: Starz Developing Pole Dancer Drama 'Pussy Valley,' 'Dirty Girls Social Club' Adaptation

Shortly after renewing the escort drama The Girlfriend Experience, the pay cabler announced Monday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that it is developing a pole dancer series titled Pussy Valley.

The hourlong drama takes an unflinching and unapologetic look at the lives of five pole dancers working at an infamous Mississippi "shake junt" called the Pink Pony. In this southern strip club world, the desires of athletes and politicians collide with the dreams of these working women, on the quest for money, power and respect. The line between performance reality blur as their personal drama spills onto the stage.

Creator and writer Katori Hall (The Blood Quilt) will executive produce Pussy Valley with Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin (New Girl), Jenno Topping (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes); and Dante Di Loreto (American Horror Story). Khaliah Neal will serve as consulting producer. Starz svp of original programming Marta Fernandez will serve as the executive in charge of Pussy Valley.

Also in development at Starz is an adaptation of the best-selling novel Dirty Girls Social Club written by Alisa Valdes. The project is described as a sexy half-hour series about six diverse professional women living in New York City who known each other since college. A decade later, they can still count on each other as they weather professional and personal ups and downs.

Starz has put in development superhero-themed series Tomorrow, Today, based on a screenplay by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, who also will executive produce. The project falls under an extension of the Power exec producer’s overall deal announced today at TCA.

Tomorrow, Today is a superhero-themed series about a veteran from the south side of Chicago who, after being falsely imprisoned, becomes the personal experiment of a mad prison doctor trying to create the perfect man – and an unstoppable killing machine. Set free, but on the run, the veteran must reconcile with the world that has turned against him, and use his newfound abilities for good.

Anthony Cipriano (Bates Motel) and Dan Kay (I.T.) will executive produce Tomorrow, Today with Kirkland Morris serving as producer. Cipriano, Kay and Morris will also write for the series.

Starz in getting into the telenovela business. The premium cabler said at TCA today that it is working with Lionsgate and Televisa USA to develop Teresa, a serialized drama based on the popular Mexican series. Carlos Portugal (East Los High) will create the series and serve as showrunner.

Teresa focuses on an undocumented young Latina clawing her way into the exclusive world of Los Angeles wealth. The series will chronicle her ruthless pursuit of money and power and her willingness to do anything to get them. No cast has been announced.

Cinemax Sets ‘Micronesian Blues’ Drama From ‘Banshee’ EPs

Banshee co-creator executive producer Jonathan Tropper and executive producer/director Greg Yaitanes are partnering with Grey’s Anatomy alum Patrick Dempsey for a new crime thriller drama project at Cinemax.

Micronesian Blues, written by Tropper and to be directed by Yaitanes, is based on the true story of Los Angeles cop Bryan Vila, a former Marine who had served in Vietnam, who took a job training local police in Micronesia in the early 1990s, expecting a paid vacation.

The series tells the story of a burned out LA cop who accepts a teaching job in Micronesia, only to find himself caught up in a bloody war between tribal gangsters, lawless mercenaries, and crooked CIA agents.

Diamond Trade Drama ‘Ice’ From Antoine Fuqua Ordered To Series By Audience

AT&T’s Audience Network has given a formal series green light to Ice, handing a 10-episode order to the project from Antoine Fuqua’s Fuqua Films and Entertainment One about the world of diamond traders in downtown Los Angeles. Fuqua will direct the first episode and serve as executive producer on the show, which begins production this month for a premiere later this year.

Ice, named after the slang word for diamonds, is written and executive produced by Robert Munic (Fighting). It is described as a high-impact, serialized crime drama that follows the Green family as they plunge into the underbelly of the L.A. diamond trade.

Freeform has put in development Stuff, a single-camera comedy series from The C Word creator Darlene Hunt and producer Aaron Kaplan (Friends With Better Lives) of Kapital Entertainment, I have learned. Sony Pictures TV is the studio.

Written by Hunt, Stuff is about the family of women who own and run a consignment shop in Kentucky called Been There Wore That.

Written by Leight and to be directed by Haggis, Salvation begins on Fourth of July weekend. A summer storm unexpectedly intensifies and changes track to New York Harbor. Power goes out. Flood waters rise. Most Brooklyn hospitals are forced to evacuate. With few doctors on call, and without any warning, the recently downsized Our Lady of Salvation now becomes the borough’s last viable trauma center. NCIS producer Charles F. Johnson has teamed with French producer-director-writer Joy Fleury and producer Karen Gordy to develop Amazons, a multi-episode live-action TV series about African female warriors. A network is not yet attached.

Co-created by showrunner Didier Lacoste (L’ecole du Pouvoir) and writer-director Armand Bernardi, the series tells the story of Amazons, an army of 6,000 female soldiers who fiercely fought against the French Colonial army and other enemies of the Dahomey Kingdom. The kingdom was the last non-colonized West African empire which existed from 1600-1894 and was unique in that men and women had societal parity and shared ruling authority over the government.

None of the shows I posted before the edit sounded interesting, and the entire initial reason for posting was the show added in the edit. I really should not do late night posting.

NBC’s developing a sexier Cruel Intentions pilot for streaming services

The Cruel Intentions series is not part of the network’s fall schedule because, as NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke put it, the “soapy spot” in the lineup where it could have fit instead went to This Is Us (or, as it’s known among trailer enthusiasts, This Is Ass). But according to Salke, NBC’s not quite giving up the retelling ship, and is now entertaining the idea of developing the series for an online platform.

I think there would be two versions of the show. If it ends up on some alternative platform, we would have more leeway, but it is designed to be dishy and fun and push the envelope as far as sexuality. It’s not something we’re inviting kids in to watch.

- Deadline: HBO Orders Duplass Brothers Anthology Comedy Series ‘Room 104’

HBO has picked up Room 104, an anthology comedy series from brothers Jay and Mark Duplass. Set in a single room of an average American hotel, Room 104 tells a different story of the assorted characters who pass through it in each episode. It will begin production in Los Angeles later this year for 2017 debut.

“Jay and Mark Duplass are two of the most inventive talents in TV today,” said HBO president of programming Casey Bloys. “We’re excited to see what they do with this unique concept.”

The project stems from filmmaking brothers Jay and Mark Duplass’ overall deal with HBO. The duo (along with Steve Zissis) also created the HBO comedy series Togetherness, which ran for two seasons, and executive produce HBO’s adult animated comedy series Animals, which returns for its second season in 2017.

“We’ve all seen stories set in seedy motels and high-class international resorts, but for years we’ve been fascinated by the funny, weird, sad, scary, absurd things going down in that corporate chain hotel near the airport. That’s what Room 104 is after… finding some magic in the seemingly mundane,” said Jay and Mark Duplass.

‘Black Flags’ Miniseries About Rise Of ISIS From Bradley Cooper & Todd Phillips In Works At HBO

Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS, the 2016 Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Joby Warrick, is headed to the small screen. HBO has put in development a miniseries based on the nonfiction book. The project is being developed by Bradley Cooper, who executive produces with with Todd Phillips via the duo’s Joint Effort production banner.

Bestselling author Gregg Hurwitz (Orphan X, Wolverine) is writing the adaptation and executive producing. Helmer Tim Van Patten (Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire) executive produces and will direct.

Black Flags tells the story of the rise of ISIS, from its origins in a remote Jordanian prison to its stunning success in Syria. The book tracks the group’s unlikely roots and transformation into the world’s most feared terrorist organization – as well as the small band of American and international agents tasked with shutting it down.

After reading Black Flags, Cooper immediately envisioned it as a limited series and sought out the author, Warrick. He and Phillips then traveled to Warrick’s hometown to meet with him. The duo pitched the idea for the mini and discussed collaborating together on the project.

Marta Kauffman Sets Miniseries At HBO Starring Natalie Portman

Marta Kauffman, whose Grace and Frankie is wrapping production on its third season, is ramping up the slate of her Okay Goodnight, which is behind the popular Netflix comedy series starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

Kauffman and Okay Goodnight have miniseries We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves in development at HBO. Natalie Portman is attached to star in and executive produce the project, based on Karen Joy Fowler’s award-winning novel of the same name.

We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves is a twisty tale centered on university student Rosemary Cooke (Portman), whose complex and unusual upbringing is marred by the unexpected disappearance of a “twin sister” at the age of 5. Christopher Monger, the Emmy nominated co-writer of HBO’s Temple Grandin, is penning the TV adaptation, with Homeland and Tyrant co-creator Gideon Raff on board as executive producer.

Okay Goodnight is developing an American version of the hit Israeli TV family drama Shtisel. The adaptation, titled Emmis, has been sold to Amazon.

Emmis is an intricate and authentic family drama that offers a rare glimpse into the insular world of the ultra-orthodox community. Etan Cohen is writing, directing and executive producing the adaptation.

Showtime Developing Medical Drama From Antoine Fuqua & Amy Holden Jones

Showtime has put in development The City, a dark medical drama project executive produced by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) and Amy Holden Jones (Mystic Pizza).

The City centers on an idealistic young doctor who begins his first day of residency under the supervision of a senior resident who appears tough and brilliant, but turns out to be a cunning and deadly psychopath. The project’s take on the medical drama genre is being compared to what The Shield did for police procedurals.

It's hard to get A-list, Oscar winning actors to settle down for series regular roles on a multi-season series. Easier to just go the mini/limited/anthology route.

“Development will begin immediately on what we hope will be the first of several interlocking series,” he wrote.

The TV series could be “coming to your home screens in the next year or two,” Martin wrote, adding that he himself won’t be working on the show. “(M)y own development deal is exclusive to HBO, and I am writing The Winds of Winter, as I believe most of you will recall… but I have every confidence in Melinda Snodgrass and Gregory Noveck. They know and love the Wild Cards universe almost as well as I do, and I think they will do a terrific job.”

Wild Cards is a 22-volume (to date) book series – the first volume published in 1986 – set in an alternate world. Martin’s blog describes Wild Cards thusly: “The shared world of the Wild Cards diverged from our own on September 15, 1946 when an alien virus was released in the skies over Manhattan, and spread across an unsuspecting Earth. Of those infected, 90% died horribly, drawing the black queen, 9% were twisted and deformed into jokers, while a lucky 1% became blessed with extraordinary and unpredictable powers and became aces. The world was never the same.”

Translations and reprints of Wild Cards books and stories have been published around the globe, with comic books, graphic novels, and role-playing games also chronicling the adventures of the aces and jokers of the Wild Card universe.

Robert De Niro & Julianne Moore To Topline David O. Russell TV Series

This is a hot TV package that is yet to hit the marketplace but already has the town buzzing. I’ve learned that David O. Russell is behind a drama series project, which has Oscar winners Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore attached to star.

Details about the show are sketchy, but I hear it is a crime/cop thriller that might be set in the 1990s. It is unclear whether it would be a regular or limited series, but I hear it is designed to run multiple seasons. I hear the show is targeting cable networks and streaming services. With the auspices involved, it is expected to net a series order. In fact, I hear that offers for big commitments are being solicited prior to the pitch going out, which is very rare for a TV series. It underscores just how competitive the current television landscape is, especially when A-list feature talent is involved.

Oh Nellie, you just can't help yourself from writing things in the vaguest (and grammatically worst) way imaginable.

- Grant Morrison & Brian Taylor Board ‘Brave New World’ Project At Syfy

Batman vs. Robin scribe Grant Morrison and Brian Taylor (Crank) have been tapped to adapt Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave New World for Syfy, Universal Cable Productions and Amblin TV. They will also executive produce, along with Amblin TV’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey.

Syfy announced last year it was developing the novel for TV. Considered one of the most influential genre classics of all time and named fifth among the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th Century by Modern Library, the 1931 novel looks 632 years into the future and anticipates new developments in reproductive technology, sleep-learning, psychological manipulation and classical conditioning that combine to profoundly change society.

UCP is also developing Happy! for Syfy, an adaptation of a graphic novel originally written by Morrison and co-created with artist Darick Robertson. Morrison and Taylor are set as executive producers and co-wrote the pilot; Taylor is attached to direct. This grimy crime black comedy features Nick Sax, a corrupt, intoxicated, ex-cop turned hit-man adrift in a twilight world of casual murder, soulless sex and betrayal. After a hit goes wrong, Nick finds a bullet in his side, the cops and the mob on his tail and a monstrous killer in a Santa suit on the loose. But his world is about to be changed forever by Happy, a tiny (imaginary) blue winged horse with a relentlessly positive attitude.

Showtime has given a pilot order to SMILF, a comedy based on Frankie Shaw’s Sundance Short Film Jury Award-winning short film. Shaw is writing, directing, producing and starring in the semi-autobiographical project, which was originally bought by Showtime for development in spring 2015. Lee Eisenberg & Gene Stupnitsky and Michael London executive produce.

Developed by Shaw and Eisenberg & Stupnitsky through ABC Signature, SMILF is set in Boston and takes a raw look at a single, 20-something (Shaw) whose desires for relationships, sex, and a career collide with the realities of young, single motherhood.

Robert Downey Jr., Nic Pizzolatto Eyeing TV Project at HBO

Nic Pizzolatto and Robert Downey Jr. are in talks for a drama project, with the “True Detective” creator attached to write and the “Iron Man” actor attached to star, sources tell Variety.

Plot details are scarce, but insiders say the project is based on Downey Jr.’s “Perry Mason” reboot, which he had been developing as a feature film at Warner Bros. for several years. Pizzolatto, Downey Jr., and his producing partner and wife, Susan Downey, of Team Downey will serve as exec producers.

Sources indicate the project will be a series, rather than a TV film, and that the project has been gestating at HBO since as early as May.

Lifetime has ordered a scripted pilot for hourlong psychological thriller A Midsummer’s Nightmare, a take on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, from A+E Studios, and The Firm’s Jeff Kwatinez (Royal Pains), and Josh Barry (Salem).
