Twinsen's Odyssey (aka Little Big Adventure 2) questions

1. Were there separate Windows and DOS releases? Here, it's listed as a DOS game, but the requirements list Windows as well. In other words, will the version I linked to run on Windows XP?
2. Is playing the first game a prerequisite? I doubt it, but I'm just asking...

I don't know about 1, but 2 is a no. It really doesn't make a difference. I personally never played the first, but felt Twinsen's Odyssey was one of the greatest, most engrossing games of all time.

On a tangent, I read a while ago that the creator of Twinsen's Odyssey -- I suddenly forgot his name -- is working on a game that's in the same vein as the Little Big Adventure series. Beyond that, I haven't the slightest clue what's going on with that, or what that is going to be. If anyone can give me information regarding that supposed game, please do.

In other words, will the version I linked to run on Windows XP?
Both DOS and Windows version are included on the same CD. However, the game does not work under XP and with latest video cards, out of the box. The good news is that there's an unofficial patch that makes it work!

Here's the ReadMe file from the patch:

What is this?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a patch for the game Little Big Adventure 2 (also known as Twinsen's
Odyssey). It fixes a bug that causes incorrect display with certain video cards:
the image is small, unrecognizable and placed at the top side of the screen.
Systems with GeForce 2 cards running Windows 2000 and XP, and some old laptops
are known to be affected.
This is an "unofficial" patch. It is neither made nor supported by Adeline
Software or Electronic Arts. All problem reports related to it should be sent
to sandijsr@mail.lv or posted on System problems forum of the Magic Ball Network
at www.magicball.net/forum.
This patch is provided free of charge and without warranties of any kind.
How to apply this patch?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Extract files from LBA2PATCH.ZIP to your Little Big Adventure 2 folder and
run PATCH.EXE once. After this, run the game as you always do.

What causes the display problem and how is it fixed?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
LBA2 doesn't query display driver for pitch value (the difference between
addresses of the first pixels of two consecutive lines of image) at the right
time. It apparently uses the value returned by IDirectDraw.EnumDisplayModes
method, which may be incorrect with some drivers. The patch changes the code to
read the pitch value after each call to IDirectDrawSurface.Lock.
I've had the problem running the game, but this patch fixed the problem. Get it here:
Playing the first game is definitely not a pre-requsite. I've played the sequel first and enjoyed it immensely. Later, I've tried playing the first one, but it felt so much clumsier and just not as immersive or good (IMO)
