if they're discussing anything related to compromise, settlement, resolution, etc. that shit should be treated as confidential and def not recorded

fuck just out of a sign of respect given you're talking to another leader of a country, don't record him

????

Are you serious?

Sure, that would be nice. But we have every reason to be concerned when it comes to Trump and Putin.
Don't get me wrong, there needs to be every shred of accountability possible for Trump and his administration, and if this actually did happen that's a big warning bell. But I'm just saying that they're probably smart enough to hide their shady dealings.

this is.... not surprising if true. You want to have a private conversation with someone? Do it in person. If it's a government phone call, record that shit.

Wouldn't want there to be evidence that treason is occuring. That would be a golden opportunity to impeach him.

I'll take a shower now.

peepee.

You think that countries don't all record their official State calls? A record of these calls needs to be kept for history. Respect doesn't enter into it.

Looking forward to the Trump tapes in 30 years after his impeachment.

There will be no 30 years with the way things are going. All records will be destroyed if there are any to be made.

Putin probably told him "Time to test NATO. Best believe you're with me, or I'm putting up that video".

I can imagine trump trying to get into some shady shit over the white house phone and Putin just being like "dude wtf are you doing not now"

You're on a roll with this pro-Trump, anti-knowing what you're talking about stuff huh?

Just following the leader

There is no clear guideline or indication as to whether or not it is policy to record all phone calls, particularly between world leaders. However, transcripts of phone calls have been released before to the public, up until as recently as 2008.

We also know that, at least up until 2012, all conversations in the Oval Office were recorded.

When phone calls between world leaders is publicised, a general transcript of the conversation is released to the media. The Russians in this instance, for example, released a detailed report on the content of the discussion. This means the Kremlin recorded the conversation with Trump in order to create a report discussing the content of that call.

The White House, however, released only a brief statement about the call.

It's also possible that Russias report was BS

I can't find anything concrete about a law requiring phone calls to be recorded. It seems that calls do not have to be recorded or transcribed, just logged.

The closest I can find is this PC World article from 2009 about Obama's BlackBerry

http://www.pcworld.com/article/157907/obama_blackberry.html
Records are typically deemed "open" 12 years after the president leaves office, but can be opened by presidential consent, by the Freedom of Information Act or subpoena before then, he adds.

However, current law doesn't require presidential phone calls to be recorded, though they have to be logged.

Presidential Records Act
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_Records_Act
Specifically, the Presidential Records Act:
  • Defines and states public ownership of the records.
  • Places the responsibility for the custody and management of incumbent Presidential records with the President.
  • Allows the incumbent President to dispose of records that no longer have administrative, historical, informational, or evidentiary value, once he has obtained the views of the Archivist of the United States on the proposed disposal.
  • Requires that the President and his staff take all practical steps to file personal records separately from Presidential records.
  • Establishes a process for restriction and public access to these records. Specifically, the PRA allows for public access to Presidential records through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) beginning five years after the end of the Administration, but allows the President to invoke as many as six specific restrictions to public access for up to twelve years. The PRA also establishes procedures for Congress, courts, and subsequent administrations to obtain special access to records that remain closed to the public, following a 30‑day notice period to the former and current Presidents.
  • Requires that Vice-Presidential records are to be treated in the same way as Presidential records.

The fact that Russia recorded it and Trump didn't is hilarious.

You HAVE to record all conversations with other world leaders, lest you get lured into blackmail with no means to defend yourself.

These recordings usually stay secret for several years until they are declassified for public historical distribution (or are unsealed in some sort of lawsuit/scandal), unless they are not deemed any threat to national security.

I'm sure they were discussing top secret info.

During a Wednesday forum on Russian-Turkish relations at the Bipartisan Policy Center, Berman suggested that the White House could not provide additional details about the call because staff had disabled recording equipment, according to Turkish journalist Ilhan Tanir.

Wait, this is the evidence? Was Berman in the room or something? Otherwise the way the article is worded it sounds like he's just speculating about the reason there was a paragraph instead of a readout, which is hardly a smoking gun.

Putin has to consent to being recorded. If a world leader refuses to speak on a recorded line, you shouldn't shut down the conversation. You just don't record the damn call.

Why the fuck would it be recorded in the first place?

Are you high? This isn't a private conservation. This is state-to-state communication at the highest levels. It is standard procedure and absolutely important to have a record of what was discussed or agreed to.

Based on this article:

It doesn't sound like there's a current policy in place that presidents *must* record all telephone conversations. It even sounds like there was a gap between Nixon and Reagan so who knows? Might be something that is done purely at the discretion of the president.

This article:

https://selfishcitizenship.com/2013...-conversations-presidential-taping-continues/

Suggests that Obama was recording all conversations in the Oval Office due to a desire to be transparent. But again doesn't sound like it's something he's doing because Congress or the Judicial branch says he has to.

Trump makes an off-the-record phone call with Putin, a leader of a sanctioned country. No big deal.

Hillary deletes emails. Throw her in jail.

Great system we got here.
