This is an absolutely ridiculous achievement. I'm sure Nintendo will put out an official press release once they've confirmed the data for themselves.

Unconfirmed sales numbers put Wii Fit at selling over 20 million units worldwide. Just to show you how insane that is, the PS3 current sits at a 22 million worldwide install base. That means that Wii Fit alone has almost caught up with global PS3 sales. I can't even fathom that amount of success! - RMC

Wii Fit continues to sell strongly a year after its release in western markets. As a result, the game has topped 20 million units in sell-through worldwide. Only 9 other titles have sold over 20m.

As of the week ending June 14, 2009 over 20 million Wii users have purchased Nintendo’s hit exercise title Wii Fit. The game has sold almost 3.5 million units in Japan since launching in December 2007 as of June 7. This is in addition to nearly 8.3m units in the Americas as of May 30, 2009 after launching in the third week of May 2008. Through the first week of June, the game has sold another 8.1m units in ‘Others’ (mostly Europe) since launching in April 2008. With the title still selling nearly 200,000 units per week worldwide, the game is assuredly over 20 million units worldwide through June 14, 2009.

At a price of 70 Pounds ($115) in the UK, 80 Euros ($112) in the European Union, $90 in the United States and 8800 Yen ($91) in Japan for most of its shelf life, the game has grossed roughly $1.9 billion dollars in revenue. Throw in sales for Australia and other small markets and the game is even closer to earning $2 billion.

With sales for the game likely to remain at 100,000 to 200,000 per week for the next several months, bringing in roughly ~$20 million per week on a worldwide basis, Wii Fit should become the first game ever not bundled with video game hardware to top $2 billion in revenue. The game should cross the $2 billion revenue threshold sometime in the next two weeks.

Wii Fit is the tenth video game to be purchased new by over 20 million gamers. Since 2005, Nintendo has released at least one title to eventually sell over 20 million units lifetime every year. Nintendogs started the trend, sitting comfortably over 23 million today . For 2006, Nintendo released Wii Sports which topped 20 million months ago already. For cynics opposed to including bundles of any kind, New Super Mario Brothers on DS will also top 20 million units and it released in 2006. Wii Play released in Europe and Japan in December 2006 but it has sold over 20 million copies worldwide since 2007. Wii Fit also released at the tail end of 2007 in Japan and will easily clear through 20m counting only from 2008 onward. Mario Kart Wii also released in 2008 and has a fair shot at topping 20 million units eventually. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl and Mario Kart DS also have a shot at eventually topping 20m units. For Nintendo’s trend of releasing one 20 million caliber hit per year to continue in 2009, the title to watch is Wii Sports Resort.
