Zach Snyder reveals anime that influenced Man of Steel climax(not the one you think)

That anime looks pretty good. So much so that I'm not going to watch any more of it since I'm considering checking it out and don't want to spoil it all. The slide into the window was more than enough.

Somewhat related. Snyder describes his rationale for the background violence in Man of Steel.

"Man of Steel" opens across Japan tomorrow, and director Zack Snyder spoke to the Japan Times about the film, discussing the criticisms directed at the death and destruction portrayed in the movie.

Snyder has gotten a lot of flack from U.S. critics about the movie's incredibly high collateral damage. An analyst quoted by BuzzFeed.com pegs the body count in the fictional city of Metropolis at 129,000 innocent bystanders, as skyscrapers crumble to the ground causing an estimated $2 billion cleanup bill.
On this, Snyder remarks, "I wanted the movie to have a mythological feeling. In ancient mythology, mass deaths are used to symbolize disasters. In other countries like Greece and Japan, myths were recounted through the generations, partly to answer unanswerable questions about death and violence. In America, we don't have that legacy of ancient mythology. Superman (who first appeared in 'Action Comics' in 1938) is probably the closest we get. It's a way of recounting the myth."

Looking at Birdy now, it's so obvious, but it's one of those things you'd never think to draw a line to unless specifically stated like this. Pretty cool.

The fights in MoS were ace too. Snyder studied well.

This will provide useful for all the MoS fanboys who claim the buildings and stuff were empty.
Superman and Zod were two Godzilla monsters in human form. That's the only point the fight sequence was trying to achieve. That kind of destruction is a lot of both Japanese and Western cartoons/comics/manga/TV/etc.

They can't have epic battles if they tiptoe around every skyscraper in a densely-packed city. That kind of writing is too convenient, even if the results are morbid.

Hopefully any fights in MoS2 will be more thoughtful since Superman's opponents will be easily outclassed.

Wow, that animation clip is pretty spot on with the Superman/Zod fight scene. Pretty fucking rad and now, I will have to watch this anime.

Interesting I'll have to look this anime up. I used to think the Neo vs Mr Smith fight scene was modeled after DBZ.

I guessed Birdy the Mighty before clicking into the thread. :) Birdy is one of my all-time anime favorites. I'm still waiting for Kazuki Akane's next series because did such a great job with Birdy the Mighty. The original Birdy OVAs are superb too, which the series basically remade then added with season 2.

My second guess would have been Project A-Ko. :)

well not really...yet

Birdy: Decode was the shit. Surprised that Snyder even knew about it. That would explain why MoS had some fantastic fights (and that's pretty much it).

Does this series always have this sort of animation? I know Naruto had something similar for a few episodes. I really like it and want more of this style.

No, only during that fight and maybe a couple of other moments during both seasons. The rest of the action isn't bad, but they obviously spunked their budget on the finale.

Still worth checking out though.

This might explain why I have zero interesting in ever watching MoS, then. Not a big fan of anime, except for Studio Ghibli movies or Bebop.

Huh.

I guess that kind of makes sense...?

I wasn't the type of guy to bemoan the collateral damage

If they shot a scene where Supes was helping a few people or trying to get away from the city and Zod pulls him back into the city, would people be as mad?
Probably not. You only need one or two scenes of the hero saving people for everyone to get over the destruction.

That explains a lot, Birdy the mighty decoded is narratively a piece of awful garbage, I can see why the movie turned out the way it did, zack snyder should stop watching animu or we're going get more "Sucker punch" like poison in the form of Superman/batman movie his directing next.

Didn't like the TV series, preferred the older OVA series.

Yeah, the original OVA and the manga are more interesting overall (though Yuuki Masami can be somewhat of a snooze-writer) but Decode is pretty solid.

I didn't see MoS so I couldn't guess, heh.

Birdy had a 33 volume manga series though, super long.

Huh?? Because Snyder took inspiration from one anime's fight scenes you figured it explains why you're not interested in MoS because you're not a fan of anime? What????

That's just silly

I like the Superman vs Captain Marvel fight more.

All that destruction porn with no need for incomprehensible shakycam.

omgg look at all the people who died!!!111 Why doesn't Superman cares!?
Well for starters, it was clearly shown in the episode that there was no one in those buildings.

However, other episodes that have shown rampant building destruction don't do the same haha

Proudly debt free. If you need a couple bucks, just ask.
I started watching it, I'm only 3 eps in but I dig it so far. Can someone explain to me the mechanics behind Birdy and Tsutomu? Tsutomu is living in a dream world basically? Nothing that happens to him is real?

I don't remember if they explained it yet but
they're both sharing the same body while they use their science/magic to build Tsutomu a new body.
