No, they weren't "correct." They claimed it couldn't be done and that it couldn't be made an option. That wasn't true.

Technically was true. In terms of practicality, no. The only way to maintain cross-version compatibility would have been to ship a massive 6GB shim DLC so that when playing the TU, you'd load the new data, and when playing 1.0, you'd play using the old data. That's a pretty big piece of DLC to send out and Reach was compiled with the older SDK that only allowed ~4MB updates anyway.

LAN compatibility is a whole different issue and hardly an excuse with how easy it is to pull down a title update.

Over half of Halos customers never connected their copies to the internet. They were considering their entire userbase, not just a minority of it. The average user does know how to manually acquire 360 title updates and shouldn't be required to know how. Part of the point of shipping Megalo is that future Reaches could have new gametypes scripted that work with previous Reaches without having to ship a title update.

Bungie was stubborn, made excuses, and misled the community in an effort to stand behind the mistake that was bloom. It should have never existed or at the very least been a custom gametype selectable option, but Bungie insisted on shoving it down the throats of unhappy players.

Mislead? What?

Bloom itself is subjective. Some people liked it or did fine with it, some didn't. The answer wasn't to come in, title update the game, and remove and reduce bloom on the DMR without changing it's Rate of Fire or rebalancing the rest of the sandbox to account for the now overpowered DMR. And then carry that DMR over to Halo 4.

Not only that, but 343 torched LAN compatibility over changing one gun, and didn't use the advantage of breaking LAN to fix vehicle bugs (the Gauss can fire right through Forge World objects), or balance vehicles like the Banshee. Then they took all the feedback that the Banshee was broken and included it by default in a DLC map, which they finally deleted months later in a playlist update. In fact, they introduced a bug with healthpacks in the title update where they didn't really heal you, and tried to force bleedthrough into the entirety of Reach after telling us they'd beta test all TU features first. And didn't add any feedback mechanism for bleedthrough, so it felt like you were just randomly dying. They never came back and title updated that bug, so they just backed out the bleedthrough flag in the TU gametypes. If you're going to break functionality users have expected for an entire decade, make it worth breaking.

The only one I'm iffy on is Headlong. I could see that one not making the cut for the super-six if only because it just seems like a middle ground... it's rarely the map people mention when I ask them what their favorite maps of the old days were. Although forging on Headlong would be the shit.
It's definitely one of my favorites. And really one of the best BTB maps we've gotten in the series. Shame there's been little amount of those 1-flag and 1-bomb types. After Halo 2 they kind of stopped doing it. In fact, quality went downhill overall.

What are the odds pre-loading available for this, Then what are the odds it wont be tied to PST/PDT?

That'll be more up to an XB1 update. They've stated that they are looking at pre-loading, and I would expect they could implement it before November. I would wait an see what other (if any/or if the feature happens) games do about timezones and such.

Headlong's also one of my favorites. That and Containment.

Halo 3 sadly went with mostly symmetrical BTB maps. A couple of them (like Avalanche) worked well with 1-flag/1-bomb (and it featured a few small 1-sided maps like High Ground). But yeah, then Reach's 1-sided big team stuff was all Invasion, and none of those maps were designed quite well enough to really double well as good BTB maps. And Boardwalk's really the only map I can think of that worked kinda well one-sided. It kinda felt like that aspect of Reach's development time was crunched. Bungie responded to certain feedback from how the beta went with Powerhouse and Sword Base, but the changes themselves weren't quite ideal (versus, say, how Epic had the luxury of taking a lot more time after the Gears 3 beta and altered the geometry of maps in order to improve gameplay). And then of course Halo 4's CoD-ified gameplay only played toward symmetrical design since map movement and respawns were way too fast for one-sided gametypes.

I think part of the problem is that varying the map pool with "specialized" maps for one-sided gametypes requires more maps. It stretches it a bit thinner so that basically every map needs to be a hit (which wasn't an issue for Halo 2; since Backwash was basically the only "dud"). Symmetrical map design is "easier" since you can be sure that every map can be used in pretty much every mode, which has taken greater importance since then, as the introduction of Forge has eaten into the map count, and then Reach was stretched very thin by Invasion, etc.

343i really outdid themselves on this one. The wait is gonna be killer. Frankie if you need a QA tester just let me know!

Haha someone asked to be a tester to balance Smash Bros and that's what Sakurai responded with.

Haha that good. I have never made a video game but I do have some knowledge in various programming languages, QA testing, and project management from my day job.

I am really curious to see if this brings the original Halo population back or if they play it for a couple weeks and migrate back to COD etc. Hopefully we will see a revival of the Halo fanbase and strong population numbers rolling into Halo 5.

This is going to be so great, words can't even describe.
I wonder how Halo 3 is gonna feel in 1080/60fps with some tweaked gfx.
wish they could widen the fov tho

60fps yes. I expect the game currently runs at 900p, but they will try hard to get it to 1080p according to Frankie.

What? When did Frankie say this? All he said was that the collection was still in development and nothing was finalized. The games are confirmed at 60fps and that 1080p was already achieved on H4 and 3. Why would you say it wasn't on 2.

What in the fuck..

Xbone is the biggest letdown of the decade.

Calm your shit. It's a video-game. If you require more 1080p in life look outside and you will find everything in 1080p. Also, nothing we've seen is final code of the remastered version. So relax, and wait till 343 or Frankie says something.

I'm strangely excited for this collection. As in: I want to play it SO BAD. And I don't even have an X-Bone! And probably won't buy one for a year or two!

IIRC they suggested they might still be trying to get it perfect before confirming 1080p for Halo 2. Actually, the screenshots from E3 look like they were only rendering at ~810p (3/4 res on each axis).

It's probable that this doesn't mean much, though.

No. Halo 1 was 90 degrees too. H3 is correct.
Neither CE nor Halo 3 use an FoV of 90 degrees for their single-player view. CE's original 4:3 and Halo 3's default 16:9 both use 70 degrees horizontally. This winds up making Halo 3's feel smaller, since you get less vertical view; Halo 3's 4:3 view gives you only 55 degrees horizontally.

Even in top-bottom split-screen, Halo 3 is barely over 90 degrees.

That would be the biggest joke ever and I would boycott the shit out of this game.
This comment. Just ... Wow.
With a comment like this I don't even know if you deserve the game anyway. However, in the end I am pretty sure they will deliver 1080p - even maybe at the cost of other effects-, just because of guys like you.

They need to run 2 engines at the same time. One of them is pretty new and powerful. The game still has 4 months.

I think it's probably going to be 720p in all honesty. Less effects, too. I doubt it hits 60fps. 343i will just have to make too many sacrifices.

I would rather a 900p game with solid 60fps, than a 1080p with unlocked 35-40 screen tearing hell. All said and done, XBO is not that powerful, and would probably require a lot of wizardry to get 1080P/60fps from the Anniversary edition. I expect such wizardry from 343 studios (Halo 4 was a technical marvel), but I'm more than sceptical with Saber Studios (their Halo AE had bad framerate).

Resolution is less important than getting the true feel of the games. After stating the games will play at 1080p would be good if they hit it though.

Lol resolution whiners smh.

Also an FOV slider or a set up for vertical sensitivity would be so awesome.. for Halo 5 or the collection..

And the other one is 10 years old and was designed to run on 64mb of RAM, being emulated on a machine with 128 times that. What was your point again?

New generation hardware running a game from 2 generations ago on an engine from the previous generation at a sub-1080p resoution and this is the excuse?

Seriously..

I played around 2000 hours of Halo in my life. I deserve to criticise my favourite IP of all time.

I want 1080p/60fps and I don't care if they have to reduce some effects. Halo 2 Remastered looks like Halo 4 anway.

Missing out on the remake of one of the biggest fps of all times because of a 10% or so lower resolution than you expected?

Okay then. It's still much higher than the original version, you know.

This discussion is pretty much senseless right now, because the final resolution is not set in stone. Their target is 1080p. They will hit that - I am pretty sure. And even if not, you probably won't notice it on your own ... Well, until that DF article comes up of course.

This attitude is every bit as bad as the "you can't notice higher than 30fps" bullshit. I have eyes and standards, stop presuming what I or anyone else can tell or not, thank you.

When you think about it, there's gonna be 6 games on the disc.

Halo CE: A
Halo 2: A
Halo 2: A/4 Hybrid MP with the 6 maps.
Halo 3
Halo 4
Halo 5 beta

Bananas. I hope the Halo 2A: MP is good.

ugh. Like 1080p or 900p fucking matters when millions of people are now gaming in four times that resolution. Like with PS4 games, resolution and framerate is a trade off, not a guarantee in anything.

Wat? Millions of people playing in 4k?

Doubtful. According to the monthly Steam survey 34% percent of PC gamers use 1080p with a select few playing in higher resolutions. Hell even 24% of people are playing in 1,366x768.

I never made that comparison and your statement is just wrong based on simple math.

900p -- 1080p = 44% difference
30fps -- 60fps = 100% difference

I also never said it is a fact you won't notice a difference. I said probably.

However, this resolution shit is already goofy enough. I will enjoy the game at 900p as I will at 1080p.

The game will probably end up 1080p anyway, which you will be happy about. For me I am looking forward much more to content news like maps or the ranking system.

If you tell me 1080p is important for you - okay, go for it. Your opinion. If you tell me you will not buy the game because of less rendered pixels, then for me, this is just foolish. My opinion.

This thread does not deserve to be shit on with this resolution hogwash.
