Of course, I assume she's going to turn out to be worth shit in future episodes, but she is just grating on every last nerve in this first one. This shit is like Sykler all over again, complete with the husband having a fatal disease.

you see over the next few episodes that she also functioned as Lucius' producer and had a hand in most of his early music. She was basically the Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to Lucius' Janet

Ah okay, I knew they weren't going to leave her case for the empire being as weak as it is now. Maybe I'll change teams as things progress, Lucius did just straight up murder somebody, so...

I'm surprised how much my wife and I are liking this show.

I love the show but one complaint:

1. Entire first episode is about telling us rappers are not thugs.
2. Episode ends with the main character shooting a guy.
 
Feel like only person who prefers Jamal's song to Drip Drop.

And also pulling in some giant names for the rest of the season.

And seeing the promo pic again, Terrence's haircut was something...
 
Lol, Drip Drop is terrible, especially the hook, but that doesn't mean it can't take up residence in your dome for a while.

Drip Drop is a terrible song but it's also catchy. IRL I can see that being real popular.

I need to rewatch the pilot, but I swore it changed in like every scene he was in

I was hoping they stuck with that in the series.

Also, what the hell made the Drip Drop video go over budget? It was mostly green screen and him dancing on a single set?

I just started watching episode 1, and I'm digging the singing so far. Hopefully it's a show worth watching, I'll at least give it 3 episodes before I judge.

Wasn't that why they used green screen? His crew mentioned they thought they were going to be filming on location in Miami...cheating with green screen and using some of Tiana's budget by featuring her in the video keeps it in budget.
 
Watched all five eps last night and knew there was a thread for it here somewhere.

Holy shit at how good this is and the twists that happen. This is how you do a TV show.

I thought this show was going to be lame....How wrong I was. WOW this shit is too much! Empire is alot of fun I only cringed during the first episode because I was not feeling the type of show it was. I kept watching and I'm so glad. Me and my girlfriend finally have a show we can watch together other than murder porn on ID network!

P.S Jamal and Cookie FTW!

Oh, no, yeah, he's completely corrupt. Kills his friend while preaching how the poetry of rap can get kids out of that life. Asking Anika to marry him simply so he can get a clean medical slate for the IPO. Using Cookie's money to start the company, but not telling his investors or board. There have even been strong hints that he cheats on Anika.

Lucius is not a good person. I am almost done with anti-hero main characters, the only thing saving me from hating the characterization of Lucius is:

1) Morally, he's pitch-black and there's a certain safety in that as a viewer.
2) The show is extremely transparent in how comfortable it is as a straight-up soap.

OH. My dumbass didn't even figure that one out. That's pretty cold.

So I watched the newest episode again (I NEVER do this) DEAD at Porche trying to snatch her phone back from Hakeem. Such a pointless and miniscule moment but godamn it had me rolling.
 
I think my favorite thing about this shit is the battle going on between the writers and the producers. Writers say, "We got them performing at the Kid's Choice Awards for the climax!" and the producers go "uhhhhh we spent all our budget on Cuba Gooding Jr just have them lil' kids gather around them on a high school theater stage or some shit in the back". Writers say "we're doing a multi-million dollar music video!", producers like "my dude Britney Spears 'Work Bitch' video cost about a million dollars, and that shit had Spears dancing in the middle of a man-made lake with fake sharks circling her, and a Lamborghini doing doughnuts in the desert for no reason. How bout just a green screen we borrowed from Sleepy Hollow set next door tho"

Next episode should have Terrence Howard meeting with the President at the white house, and it ends with the president maybe just leaving him a note on the phone, and its one of the Empire producers doing an Obama vocal impression.

Well, doing a scene at the actual Kid's Choice Awards would be rather expensive and time-consuming.

As for the music video's budget.... that was the entire point.
