Fraternity chanting the n-word

As an alumni of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity this is appalling to me on so many levels as this is far beyond was is instilled in us when joining the fraternity. Especially coming from my own chapter that has African American members and welcomed a non Greek Africa American student to live in our house. Ryan was welcomed and treated as a brother from the day he moved in.

I'm happy Brad took action and closed down the chapter. There is no room for this in our organization.

Ryan was the non Greek African American student that lived in our house. He was always considered a member by the chapter even though he was not. Our chapter every rush would offer him a bid to join.

Would sound better if they are chanting.

1. Oklahoma isn't really "the South."
2. If you think racism is isolated to Southern Greek organizations you're sadly mistaken. America is a racist country, period.

I'm glad Boren is taking decisive action, and hopefully those allegations at UT-Austin are investigated as well.

I mean Greek life definitely isn't for everyone, but you realize you're insulting/grouping the Black/Hispanic frats and sororities that do the same kind of things, right?
 
I was in a fraternity in college, and overall, it was a positive experience, but I never bought into it to the degree where I ever feel the need to vigorously defend the community when shit like this happens and the entire Greek culture gets criticized.

The very nature and structure of fraternities and sororities contribute to nonsense like this. They're organizations with gender-exclusive membership that usually involve some element of secrecy. It's a breeding ground for shitty behavior.

1. that's debatable. I think you'd find more people saying that Oklahoma is the south vs. not
2. of course it's not but southern fraternities in particular have a strange habit of becoming extremely proud of their "southern heritage" and shoving it down people's throats. I put quotes there because they cherry pick the awful parts to be proud of, not to mention many members aren't from the south yet they embrace that "culture" anyway. I was born and raised in NC and went to college in Charleston, SC. this brand of fraternity and racism in particular bugs the fuck out of me probably because I've seen it all too much.

I think it is a breeding ground for like-minded behavior. So, if the membership is made up of racist assholes then that will be magnified through the fraternity. But, if the group is made up of people who want to help their community then that will be magnified as well. This particular group was made up of racist assholes.
 
I'm still confused as to what brought on the chant. Is it part of their pre game party ritual?

might have been bid day for the spring semester if this is recent. just to let all the other organizations know how proud they are that they don't let black people in their fraternity. smdh.

This is likely accurate. The chapter leadership and membership are the ones responsible for attracting people. If the leadership is strong and actually carrying out the stated principles, the recruitment will reflect that.

If the leadership doesn't actually care about the values and rules, they make crap like what happened at OU much more likely.

That's not an accurate assessment. Expulsion is being presented as an "in addition to" the closing of the chapter, as opposed to "instead of." The solution cannot be worse in that manner. They will not have a "bigger chip on their shoulder," because the closing of the frat is a given.

The idea behind what I'm saying is that we know that a mob mentality pushes people to do (or not do) certain things. The racist chant (which we established did not start with those people) is part of that particular negative culture. People participate in it because the rest of their fraternity brothers participate in it. The same concept applies to why hazing still happens year after year in many places. By shutting down the chapter, you send a message, and destroy the method by which this particular part racist culture is passed along.

The phase "it's 2015" bothers me for some reason. It's as if people truly believe society would change in their life time.

I don't believe expelling them solicits any change. Closing down the chapter is a good start as it seems to be the root of some of this racism (different chapters having similar chants and all). It's best overall to punish them but also make them work even harder and closer with minorities to keep their enrollment at the school (after the suspension of course). What good does expelling do? Give them the hard lesson and hope their racism will dissipate on its own? It may be 2015 but a hard lesson doesn't change a person over night.

Well I live here and I don't think many Oklahomans consider it to be in "the South." I've also been to every Southern state and found the culture to be much different than here.

The Southeastern part of the state is an exception, but there's no real Confederate heritage here. Oklahoma didn't even become a state until 1907.

There was one kid on video shown, and while there were others singing, how can they prove who specifically?

These kids probably think that the n-word is fun to use. I bet some of the ones singing don't even think of themselves as racist, but are edgy as hell and want to seem hard in front of their frat brothers. However, that doesn't make their hate any less destructive.

I would think, at the very least, tolerance would heightened and strides could be made. I echo all the sentiments in this thread. Who in their right and sane mind would think this is acceptable?

fair enough, although the culture varies greatly between states. NC isn't like SC isn't like GA isn't like MS isn't like northern FL.

I am all for punishing behavior like this if it crosses into the realm of being physical or menacing. This? This is not something that I'm going to kick some kid out of school for, or to make it impossible for him to get into school anywhere else.

Their frat should and did get suspended form campus, and it shouldn't come back for a long long time.

Even if you did want to punish these kids on an individual level, how would you even go about identifying them other than the one or two prominently featured in the video? Kick them all out?

The people need to be punished and it seems like the gears are in motion for that. Great to hear. Don't care about the reasons behind why the song was sung, it's racist regardless of the circumstances.

While I'm by no means saying this is an isolated incident? I don't think that's the only reason the hammer was swift. International boards are usually pretty swift to shut anything that negatively effects the fraternity down.
 
Disgusting. I hope it stays on their records for the ones who were chanting this garbage.

I wish universities had more co-ed, mixed race frats like the one I joined. We were a service fraternity that did work around the community (tutoring, homeless/animal shelters, etc). Of course, we were laughed at by the social frats for being lame since we hardly ever partied and never got in trouble.

That and some whites consider the word "nigger" (and its variants) fun to say, especially loud and enthusiastically. I remember a story about some girls volleyball club in Buffalo saying "1,23, NIGGER!!!" as a pre game chant. I mean, apart from the overt racism, some white folks just have a weird and awkward as fuck fascination with blurting out the word "nigger".
