Fraternity chanting the n-word

20 years is more than old enough to know that singing a chant laden with racial slurs and references to lynching under the name of your fraternity is a bad idea. This isn't like those high schoolers who were referencing some dumb Drake song. There's not an ounce of subtlety here. Seeing that this something that happens in multiple chapters its clear something completely fucked is going on with the SAE.

While I'm by no means saying this is an isolated incident? I don't think that's the only reason the hammer was swift. International boards are usually pretty swift to shut anything that negatively effects the fraternity down.

Fair enough, they would have gotten swatted fast either way because this looks so bad.

Just below your comment a month prior in Texas same fraternity and same lyrics .

Sorry but not at you. But I have a hard time believing

Its your right to believe what you want. That's fine. I can only speak of my time with the Ohio Nu chapter of SAE that we've never heard of this gross "chant" let alone participated in something remotely like it.

This chapter deserves harsh punishment along with and other chapter participating in this chant.

Students of OU protested this morning. The head of the fraternity at the national level called an emergency board meeting Sunday night and they have closed the entire frat at OU. The president of OU said all students at that frat have to leave campus by midnight tonight.

That was some swift-ass justice.

"Don't harm these poor, innocent white children. They didn't know any better and surely didn't mean any harm by it all. Just boys being boys."

Or did I misread?

Apparently you misread, because I didn't say any of those things.

I just don't think you kick someone out of school for this.

Ex-fucking-splusion.

...

[Edit:]

Oh. Welp, that's good.

That and some whites consider the word "nigger" (and its variants) fun to say, especially loud and enthusiastically. I remember a story about some girls volleyball club in Buffalo saying "1,23, NIGGER!!!" as a pre game chant. I mean, apart from the overt racism, some white folks just have a weird and awkward as fuck fascination with blurting out the word "nigger".

It's because it's taboo to say. Yelling something like that provides a cheap thrill because you're doing something you shouldn't be doing.

It's still racist and unbelievably ignorant of the fact it might and almost always does really hurt people.

Some rocket thrusters on the foot that went up that frat's ass. Expulsions too? Sheeeit.
Looks like that university isnt buying into the "boys will be boys" apologetics tossed around in here.

How are they gonna prove who was singing this?

There was one kid on video shown, and while there were others singing, how can they prove who specifically?

Nothing is going to happen to these kids except losing their privilege of wearing their frat colors.

Because this:

Yeah, something tells me that joking about hanging someone on a tree isn't exactly the same thing as actually wanting to do it.

You have people in this thread who want to wreck these kids lives because they said some racist shit at age 19? 20? And as if something like this is really indicative of the kind of person you will end up being. People mature, people change.

I am all for punishing behavior like this if it crosses into the realm of being physical or menacing. This? This is not something that I'm going to kick some kid out of school for, or to make it impossible for him to get into school anywhere else.

Their frat should and did get suspended form campus, and it shouldn't come back for a long long time.

Even if you did want to punish these kids on an individual level, how would you even go about identifying them other than the one or two prominently featured in the video? Kick them all out?

Is how America feels about these sort of things.

I mean, who cares if we've been harboring a legacy racist organization perpetuating generation after generation of hate and social disparity into some of the highest levels of power? They're just crazy mixed up kids!

If we look the other way long enough, we can pretend to be surprised when these future leaders of America don't hire minorities. And if we call this an isolated incident, we can avoid asking the ugly question of where and when these kids were indoctrinated with this theme song. Was it at home? Their first day on campus? During rush? National chapter meeting? Even with the U Texas leak, I doubt anyone asks this question for very long.

Edit: Huh, the expulsion happened while I was typing this response. I stand corrected.

I'm glad retribution is happening, but I can't help but think it's for more for PR reasons than reasons pertaining to racism.

If these allegations had been without video evidence, I don't think the outcome would have been the same.

Excellent news.

They haven't expelled anyone. The deadline to leave campus is for them to vacate the fraternity house since the chapter has been closed.

Well, if there was no evidence then I see no reason this same outcome would occur, at least not this quickly. Innocent until proven guilty, which thankfully in this case was really damn quickly.

Couldn't the same be said for anything involving/not involving video evidence though?

Which is why its strange how they're calling for every student in the frat to leave campus. What if they weren't all on that bus? I wouldn't be surprised if they all acted this way, and if some don't feel the same way I don't know why in the world you would associate with these people. but this is gonna be a sticky situation.

That was unexpectedly fast. Good.

Baby steps, baby steps.

I know. Sometimes I do wish for a major catalyst, though.

Don't get me wrong, I agree. But, if they had indeed chanted and someone hadn't gotten it on video, I think an "extensive investigation" would have turned up as these kids not being racists.

Couldn't the same be said for anything involving/not involving video evidence though?

You have a point. I just feel like the PR disaster, if handled incorrectly, took precedence over the actual racism. Maybe its because I work in the field.

Founded before the civil war the fraternity was almost defunct after all 400 active members joined the fight for the confederacy.
In 2013 wash u's chapter was suspended for racist pledge processes. In 2014 Clemsons chapter was suspended for a crip inspired party....not new...at all. The history of racist practices by fraternities like this is not hard to find. I'm not outraged. This is what I expect from orgs like this

So far, OU has only disavowed any association with the SAE chapter and told the me to remove everything from the house by midnight. They are asking residents of the chapter to contact the Dean of Students if they need accommodations.

One nice thing is that since they have an on-campus house, the university can kick them out as soon as they lose their recognition from the national organization, which they have done. Most on-campus Greek houses are public-private partnerships. University owns and leases the land to the housing corporation and the housing corporation owns the actual structure. Generally in the land leases, there are provisions in the event the chapter is closed or suspended.

Good. sucks for the people not filmed or implicated. But generally impressed with the frat leadership and college. Love to be a fly on the wall at the parents houses, even the racist parents.

Mobile, but here is the statement.

TO: All Students, Faculty, and Staff

To those who have misused their free speech in such a reprehensible way, I have a message for you. You are disgraceful. You have violated all that we stand for. You should not have the privilege of calling yourselves "Sooners." Real Sooners are not racist. Real Sooners are not bigots. Real Sooners believe in equal opportunity. Real Sooners treat all people with respect. Real Sooners love each other and take care of each other like family members.

Effective immediately, all ties and affiliations between this University and the local SAE chapter are hereby severed. I direct that the house be closed and that members will remove their personal belongings from the house by midnight tomorrow. Those needing to make special arrangements for positions shall contact the Dean of Students.

All of us will redouble our efforts to create the strongest sense of family and community. We vow that we will be an example to the entire country of how to deal with this issue. There must be zero tolerance for racism everywhere in our nation.

U seem quite invested in all this

I keep responding to posters who quote me and I have issues with the characterization of my posts by others - apparently thinking that these dumbasses shouldn't get kicked out of school for this stupid racist chant means that I am some kind of racist asshole.

People are reacting to your inference that a 20 year old doesnt know any better. I reacted to it too. I would expel the men pictured, delete the chapter and make other frats think long and hard about what they teach their pledges. Otherwise much of what you said is uncontroversial.

I did not say that a 20 year old doesn't know any better - I said that a 20 year old does a lot of stupid shit and shouldn't be barred from going to school (or, as some other posters on the first page or two mentioned, "be removed from society") because they are a dumbass.

Shit, sometimes the system does work.

I think what the people are criticizing you are trying to convey is that this goes far beyond dumbassery. Throwing pieces of cake at a car is a dumbass move. Chucking water balloons at people on the street stopping to pick up a decoy dollar is a dumbass move.

An organized, racist chant by a group of 20 year old white people isn't dumbass. If they made it into college, they know the ramifications of what they were saying. It wasn't a dumbass stunt, it was calculated.

As dumb, white-trash as these kids are, I also don't think it's grounds for expulsion. If they were targeting a student/s specifically, then yes. If they're just being racist dickheads among each other, that's on them.

Fuck those guys. No tolerance for that idiotic racist bullshit.

As someone who's in minority in a fraternity at a Greek life dominated university, I think fraternities are dumb and definitely moved away from whatever their original intention was.

Most social fraternities do a philanthropy once a semester to build a resume of "yeah we do good things for the community!" But the rest of the semester it's partying off parents money, hazing kids, and being a pretentious/condescending asshole to whoever isn't in your house or isn't in Greek life. It's nothing more than a glorified college clique with letters to represent who you party with and what kind of clique you're in. Obviously this doesn't apply to all fraternities but....most have lived up to the stereotype.

The only benefits I've made from the fraternity are a few good friends I've and some connections that could potentially be useful in the future (business/career outlooks). However most of it just not necessary. I should of joined a fraternity with a purpose (academics/business), not a social one.

They shouldn't be barred from going to school, just from going to THAT school. Expulsion is completely appropriate punishment for adults who make these decisions from themselves.

Would you think the same if someone was fired from their job over something like this?
