New World of Warcraft Expansion reveal confirmed for Gamescom

Well, the game is sort of B2P now that the tokens exist. There are folks who have a sub paid up for over a year because they had millions of gold.

That's underselling it too (for NA realms anyway, other regions are all sorts of fucked). 1 million gold at current token prices can get you 2 years of game time easy. Millions of gold is entering 5+ year territory.

I subbed until 2017 when the token prices dipped down to 19k a pop. No regrets at all despite the fact I think this is the worst expansion they've put out by a long shot. It's hard to be mad when my garrisons are still pumping out more gold than I can use despite the fact they nerfed the gold you could get from it (which just goes to show how insane it was before the nerf.)

If anything they made it easier on me too, less gold missions seems to have lead to less missions overall. I only log in once a day now compared to the 3-4 times I was logging in to do missions before the patch.

They have to remove one or two raid modes, it's so boring to play the same raid four times a week.

How many people actually do this? Why would you do LFR if you are doing Heroic/Mythic?

Wonder how many reskinned wolf mounts they can stuff into the next expansion.

Or how bad the raid armor will look this time (how many cyber clown suits can they design?).

Or how they'll shaft professions this time.

Or how many knee-jerk nerfs they'll dogpile into the first few weeks of release because of babies.

Or how big of a clusterfuck their next open world pvp experiment will be.

Or how they'll make heroics absolutely pointless. Again.

So many questions.

I came back game last month and played Highmaul and Blackrock Foundry three times a week (LFR, NHC, HC) and stopped playing yesterday. The game is so monotonous if you haven't played the old content.

I'm interested to see where the next expansion will take place, but I've been done with World of WarCraft since Mists of Pandaria and MMORPGs just aren't appealing or worth the time anymore.

Hopefully Blizzard will make WoW free to play in the near future...

Not f2p but you can buy game time using in game currency now at least

Whoa, that's crazy. One of my buddies has 5.5 million gold and said he'd split it with me if we ever played again. Pretty temping now, but I think I'll wait till the next expansion since apparently WoD wasn't too hot.

They've talked about how much time it takes to do the art assets for dungeons and raids. Although each dungeon is incredibly unique these days, I'd certainly welcome them reusing some assets when needed.

Wrath did a good job of asset usage and number of dungeons. Except Oculus, fuck that dungeon. But Utgarde Keep/Pinnacle, Azjol'Nerub+Ankahet, Halls of Stone/Lightning, Nexus. I knew these were all similar aesthetically, but they were just different enough it didn't feel as bad as BC was.

I do wish they would have multiple difficulties of raid content going at once. With the catch-up mechanics they've done in MoP and WoD, they pretty much wipe out the prior raid tiers. Not cool. Someone echoed above that vanilla was cool because you knew you had so much left to accomplish.

I have a bit over 200K gold. I would use it for free months but I dont wanna pay for the expansion. I have the money, I just dont feel like paying anything for it.

I just play a bit when they give me free trials.

We need a new ranged class, another class to take advantage of bows guns etc.
I really liked BRF and HFC, but highmaul was crud imo :/

The only thing that makes WoW fresh and new again would be a transformation into a Starcraft MMO and you all know it ;P

You can easily fund your game time from just soloing old raids each week, supplemented by garrison income. Tokens cost more than twice as much gold on EU realms though, and Asian ones are exponentially higher. The correlation seems to be the amount of gold farming presence in the regions, and Russia has a heavy gold farming presence which inflates the rest of the European market.

I haven't played this in a long time, but wow, millions of gold? When did this game hit such massive inflation? I remember when scrapping together 1000 gold for an epic mount and 5k for a epic flying was like climbing Mt Everest.

Eh keep in mind it's not everyone. People posting on a hardcore gaming forum about a 10 year old video game are not exactly the main demographic actually playing the game. The thing people seem to forget is that the WoW token thing goes both ways. There are tons of people out there who have no gold, hence why they are selling WoW tokens in the first place.

There was a poll on mmo-champion a few months back asking how much gold people had and the majority of players on a supposedly hardcore WoW website were still in the <100k range.

Most people with millions of gold have been building up their fortune for years.

It's no surprise they have been scanning the auction house as their daily activities on WoW and have also began hording piles of crap in real life.

Whatever the "skin" of this next expansion, the focus has simply got to be on revitalizing the social elements of the game. Garrisons really dealt the deathblow to any kind of player interaction, and now the atmospher of the game is almost eerily solitary and quiet.

It's a lot more addictive to log and see what your friends are up to then it is to just grind out currencies. Group quests and such need to make a return, as do cities. Hopeful that they can deliever on this, it's really just a question of if WoW's slow moving development machine is able to notice and adapt their strategy in time for the next expansion. The solitude of playing is really what makes the game so short-lived.

I leveled through Draenor and have no interest in returning because I didn't meet a single person that whole time, and the pull of loot really doesn't interest me after 10 years of loot-treadmilling.

The best/worst part is Blizzard claimed they have the largest team in their history ever working on WoD. Which is currently considered the worst expansion in WoW history, with less content than others but was more expensive than others.

Hopefully Blizzard delivers with an expansion focused more on present day BL.

Word. This expansion truly has to have one or the other.

BC = BElfs/Draenei (plus no more faction exclusive classes - felt like a new class if you were only playing on one faction like most people)

Wrath = New (hero class)

Cata = Worgen/Goblins plus tons of new class combos

Pandaria = New race AND class (Pandaren/Monk)

Warlords = Nothing, unless I'm mistaken. The Level 90 boost prompted a lot of returning players to try a new class or race (or both) out that they hadn't before...I suppose.

It's time for some new shit!

tbh some specs still play like shit despite being mechanically viable (e.g. Affliction) and not everybody was hit equally with the ability prune, so I'd rather they spend the manpower getting everybody's spec in a good place before introducing another one. And even then, I think I'd rather see each class get a new spec (which would benefit everybody) before I see an entire class entirely (which would benefit the relative few that would bother rolling that class).

4 trees would probably be a nightmare to balance.

PvE? Nah, not really. Blizzard has given up on mechanical balance and have been content to band-aid deficiencies with percentage changes to various modifiers for an entire expansion.

PvP? iirc disregarding the fact that the PvP scene has evaporated, not all specs are viable for PvP anyway.

...and druids have 4.

I wonder what the original idea for garrisons was like, remember that they were originally going to use the huge bases at Black Temple for alliance and somewhere else for Horde which would be like the MoP shrines but confusingly decided to make it different and just some base out in the sticks

I agree, I left mid-way through Cata and Orgrimmar/Dala was thriving. It's just fun to walk around whilst everyone's hanging out etc.

I'm back trialling WoD and I hardly ever see another player besides dungeons.

Man Naga would be so dope as the new race. Probably won't happen, but still hoping!

I've been wanting them as a race for years now. People say it wouldn't work lore wise, all I say is look at what Blizzard has done with the lore, they could make it work.

Man naga race might actually make me come back lol.

They could do it, naga were originally elves, make it so there's some faction of good naga BAM.

Yeah, if they do it, I hope they don't give them legs just because. Keep them snake like. I don't care if they can't use mounts. Just let them slither on the ground as fast as a mount. Their flying mount could be a glider or something.

Yeah I mean half of what I used to do was just log on so I could hop around in Ironforge / Orgrimmar / Shattrath / Dalaran inspecting people and waiting for my guildmates to coalesce into a group to go do something. People might complain about downtime, but its important - just like how you don't want music to be full on all the time, or movies to be only 100% action.

All the time spent doing "nothing" is actually pretty important to just establishing a sense of place and community. WoW feels dead right now, even if millions are still playing, because everyone is in their own private world doing tons of menial little tasks.

No more wasted or orcquish themed lands, love MoP because was so colorful and not so depressing

MoP also had weather. I go there from time to time and when the clouds roll across the sky from Halfhill and the rains begin to fall...just fantastic.

On the other hand, I don't think they bothered with any weather effects in WoD outside of the Horde starting zone.

I stopped somewhere between Burning Crusade and Lich King...judging by comments here, I experienced the best of WoW. Good to see they are continually adding more content though

Its simply hilarious to me they're actually going ahead with charging $60 for leveling content that every single player is tired of and what used to be contained in a regular content patch.

So is a new playable race viable for the universe? I don't know the lore amazingly well but I know the races.

Gnomes were made up for WoW, and Worgen weren't very important/completely rewritten for Cata. Worgen weren't even in any game prior to WoW I think.

New races are possible. It would be Ogres for the Horde. Alliance would probably be Naga, but dunno how since Naga despise Night Elves.

What WoD got right - fun leveling, interesting garrison mechanics, and some nifty content (MC for a brief weekend) early.

What it got wrong? Terrible dailies and very little to the end game. Take the amazing leveling experience and combine it with a great end game, and I'm sold.

I wouldn't mind Tuskarr race, might be too close to Dwarf - I dunno. What's the race of whale/seal like humanoids whose names end with '-ggan' ?

I am actually really excited to see what this expansion is... If it is more raiding based, I might get sucked back in.

(Haven't played since Wrath)

Gnomes were in before WC3, I think. Only made-up race not part of the established lore are "draenei".

And even then they're just a blue version of the demons we've been fighting with forever, so they're more of an offshoot than a totally made up race.

Did this all the time in Vanilla running around Ironforge and getting the group together and going to the dungeon and PvPing along the way.

This is on point.

I just want Alliance High Elves, Blizz. This is one thing you can do to get my good will back.

Literally the worst of all possible race options that could happen.

Just like with WoD I may be tempted and even plan on playing again. But I won't most likely. Interested in what it is though, and especially can't wait for the cinematic!
