Developer explains FFXV's "pre-beta" state: Playable start to finish, half polished

I was in college when Vs XIII was announced. Damn. I'm an old family man now.

It took me 3 months to beat Witcher 3 and it's 3.5 months now and I still have 3 or 4 more missions to go in MGSV. This game will take me a full year to beat.

It's funny, I planned to buy a ps3 for Versus XIII and now I will buy a PS4 for XV. A whole generation went by. I could probably say the same about The Last Guardian.

I miss the big dumb in world UI that faced the camera instead of Noctis. Those face time windows were so rad!
I also thought the real time face ui was an interesting idea.

But I can definitely see why they decided to redesign it to what they have now.

The one thing I'd love is to have a UI toggle. I hate playing open world games with a minimap in my face.

That's why the E3 map was so awesome. You seemingly could toggle it on when you needed it, and because you CHOSE to enable it, it was fine if it was a bit larger than the typical mini map. So it was simultaneously unobtrusive (because it was only there when you actually wanted it to be there) and more useful than the typical minimap (because it wasn't exactly "mini").

I feel like we haven't seen anything of what this game really has to offer.

Hope they manage to keep everything under wraps until its ready to be shown properly in march's blowout.

I agree. Mini maps tend to be annoying in games. They seem like a crutch for bad level design. Even in MGS1 you sometimes end up playing the game just by looking at the minimap. I prefer maps to be used to orient myself, not something that constantly provides feedback.

Not a really big fan of the party UI (preferred the minimalistic style of the previous one), but thank god for the minimap.

Also location looks good, i'm sure this game will be huge.

UI looks loads better, honestly.

Having a slanted design with the MP bar just adds character to it all. FFXV's HUD has been minimalistic, and that's great, but it lacked something with it looking having right-angles everywhere. The new UI adds a bit of style while retaining the minimalism. It's cool.

Maldives town is looking great. FFXV's art direction is great as always. Want to see it all come together in a trailer.

My faith has never shaken despite their PR fumbling during this year, and I feel we'll see some amazing shit in March.

Looks like Luna in the midst of the party in the new ones :> She's with them in their car goofing around with Noct on the right one.
Tweet is gone?

Dayyum. This is absolutely gorgeous. Not sure about UI as I can't see it clearly. The mini-map should be helpful. Thankfully this isn't as cluttered mess as Witcher 3.

I'm hoping for a big crow-serving in March :p

Despite all the shit I said about the game, I hope I'll be one to eat a big plate of crows. Show me the customizable party A.I system, the newly updated combat that includes manual targeting of enemy body part and magic spells, new beautiful environment, some towns, dungeons, etc.

Heh, Uncle Cor. When not busting heads on the battlefield he leads impromptu family outings to the park.

Looks like Ignis on the right is walking the dog from the trailer too.

I like the Luna-goofing-with-the-guys thing too.

Preach! I've been lurking around for a while and finally decided to join. There have been countless things I've been wanting to discuss and argue about, find ways to defend decisions taken by Tabata and SE, including the whole Dawn 2.0 fiasco.

Tabata's statements about the close-knit development team and how things are running are more than reassuring. I've never followed the development of a game for this long, and for all it's worth it's been an exciting ride. I liked everything about the March demo and have no doubt that the final game will deliver. I'm in gaf now and can safely say I BELIEVE.

I apologize about the late response. I didn't see that this thread was recently bumped. But, welcome to NeoGAF! Is nice to see another lurker got their account approved. :)

I completely agree with you. I can understand why some people have been skeptical about XV, but well, I never lost hope. The game looks like everything I imagined it to be. Especially with the interactions between Noctis and the bros.

Nice icon, by the way! Female Ignis is beautiful. :)

Beautiful screenshot. I like the beach hut. I'm curious where that's located.

As for the latest artwork, I do like Luna hanging out with the bros. She's been growing on me ever since the Dawn 1.0 trailer.

I was just starting middle school when Versus got announced and now I'm halfway through college lol.

I think we've seen this place before...

Oh dope! Looks very heavily inspired by the Pacific Islands. I really dig that look, Sonic Unleashed had a similar level that was one of my favorites in the game.

Glad to Lunas left, Ignis and Prompto are in front of her and it looks like Cor is driving.

My guess because Noctis and Lunas marriage atm is mostly for political reason, either at some parade or peace thing.

Okay, this post from the official forum pointed out that it's probably some kind of rollercoaster and not a car they're all sitting in:

I can see it, too, now.

Honestly im excited but i dont care until I can play the whole game, we were strung along for 8 years before the game was reannounced and since then its been 2 years with out a whisper of a release date, you really expect me to be excited by the prospect of you announcing the release date in march? Fuck off. Wake me up when the game is done. Square has to realize that this isnt how you market a game, and if this were a lesser franchise the world would have forgotten. They need to get in the habbit of announcing games when they know they can launch in a timely manner.

It's the car shot from above. Noctis, Luna and Gladiolus are sitting in the back. Luna is messing with Noctis, giving the impression that he should scoot over because there is not enough room in the back. In the front, Prompto is looking back like an idiot, and Ignis is driving.

A key point to understanding what's going on is that this is clearly an older artwork as it is before they mirrored the side of the road the cars drive on, so everyone is in the opposite place they would normally be in.

No worries bro. Just pretend the first time you heard of it is in March, and the marketing will live up to your expectations. Beyond that, at the end of the day. Who cares how it's marketed? The bumbling marketing they've had has zero impact on the development of the game. After the game is out, no matter how poorly they were at messaging, none of this will matter. In fact, the exact reason the marketing has been so bad this year is specifically because they were focusing 100% on development, and in the process kinda screwed over the marketing team.(they were working on every aspect of the game simultaneously instead of, one piece at a time, as a result there was never enough content in a polished state to show off. It's a better workflow for development, but it killed their marketing push this year.)

I was a senior in highschool telling people the Killzone 2 trailer was definitely in realtime, because why would Sony lie?

that puzzling face
That's a picture from Sun Siyam Iru Fushi resort, in Maldives, quite a distance away from South East Asia.

Haz's team is in charge of fleshing out the locales though, so regardless he probably had a hand in the aesthetic of that dev screenshot, regardless of whether it was influenced by Maldives or SEA or otherwise.
