NX Controller Rumor [Up5: Original was fake, and thus this is too]

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
Someone on that Reddit thread posted the NES handbook for reference. Can someone open that? I'm on mobile.

I did. It looks nothing like it. It is structured completely differently.

What kind of shit TOC formatting is that?! No way it is an official document.

I've read an article which described a theory that no console manufacturer enables folders on consoles until there will be enough games to store at them in general, because using folders with small amount of games makes the system's library look barren
Here's another one.

I'm calling BS, but interesting that it mentions both Handheld & Console in the handbook (if we humor the rumor).

I've asked a few times and got no answer. No one seems to really care about the reality of all this.

They just keep throwing out fantasy features like it doesn't cost anything. All of which is super pricey. Cutting edge screens with cutting edge haptic feedback and or tactus like buttons can't possibly be cheap, even at scale. It just seems way too expensive. The Wii U Gamepad alone cost upwards of nearly 1/3 to 1/2 of the Wii U price point and people are coming up with all sorts of stuff for this NX controller that could be significantly more advanced than that.

I can't imagine what something like this would cost. Seems way too expensive. Unless it's also a fully functioning handheld on its own then the pricing is going to be high or the console itself is going to be very limited power wise again, which I don't have a big problem with but possibly not the smartest move on their part.

Certainly an under-discussed element in this thread. Somebody brings it up every now and then but it generally doesn't last.

Because we don't know shit about the pricing, so all anyone can say is "It's probably really expensive" or "It's probably not as expensive as people think it is."

We don't know anything about anything, but that hasn't stopped tree speculation or countless other things.

Really? This is a discussion forum lol.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
What the hell is Nintendo waiting on anyway? Announce this damn shit already!

The more you make people wait, the higher their expectations will be and the higher the chances of the end product disappointing people. There are 9 more months left to go in 2016 and I'm expected to believe this will launch this year? If they're waiting till the last minute to do everything expect another barren launch lineup with nothing for the next 6-12 months afterwards.

Well, game developers ?

And 1080p is possible with 21:9 since it refers to the number of vertical pixels. From what we know of 21:9 PC gaming it isn't that bad performance-wise and here you have less space that on a 21:9 rectangle. Also nothing says that the screen would be 1080p, it could be a lower resolution.

That's exactly my point. Computers can only render images in rectangular or square shapes. These Moto360-or-whatever watches have a circular-shaped screen but the rendering is still performed where you can't see the corners. Their guidelines even specify a "safe margin" where you shouldn't place UI elements 'cause they'd be cropped by the screen's shape.

Maybe game developers can render the unseen part of the screen shape at a much lower res or whatever, but you'd still be seeing just a portion of what is actually being rendered. PC monitors at 21:9 and 16:9 are still rectangular, they show all the pixels they render.

This is Sharp's new freeform technology. This is exactly what sets it apart from traditional displays. At least it doesn't look like a donut.

This is a lot better holy crap

This will never work as the standard for the system, because it means you can't play the game while looking at the tv. With no physical buttons you wouldn't know whether you are pressing the right button or not unless you are looking down at the controller. Imagine if the Wii U controller had no physical buttons and you were looking at the tv while playing. It would be impossible.

As someone who was hired to do document formatting for a fairly large medical equipment manufacturer, some of the documents I saw had SHOCKINGLY bad table of content formatting.

But most of those are internal documents and they USUALLY put in a little more effort into the externally facing documents.

Yeah, they waited too long. This is a disaster for them. Mass shipment of dev kits before you announce even the system concept? Big mistake.

Really? This is a discussion forum lol.

Every other thing in the discussion as some basis ("I don't like the lack of buttons" "That tree looks like another tree"). We literally have nothing to base price on other than the custom shaped LCDs are new... We have no idea if that technology is even expensive at all.

The Tactus thing requires a big bezel around to pump the liquid in, no? I think that tech is pointless for this case, of course nobody wants to watch a video on tablet with half the screen covered in bubbles, but here? the default buttons might as well be permanent blobs or at least textured glass instead of inflating and deflating the screen full of gel in a pattern that can't ever be reconfigured.

I am interested in the alternatives that suit programmable buttons and surfaces, which are physically bending the screen with actuators very slightly, controlling the feel of the screen electrostatically, or vibrating the screen at ultrasonic frequencies, but I have no idea of cost or feasability of those.

I don't think Nintendo's ever said it would launch this year.

Well, If I could make a guess I'd say this is just another technology that developers won't care about because it's not a standard and leave Nintendo with no games again. Unless this Sharp screen and its attached GPU can do magic, I don't think this will be a "just port it" thing. I truly hope it's not the case! And I'm not even mentioning all the touch controls floating over the game's action everyone's talking about.

Wouldn't an appropriate basis be the cost of the Wii U tablet which uses older and less advanced technology?

I don't understand why cost discussion is apparently too absurd given what's gone in this thread.

I lied, I do understand. It's less fun and gets in the way of more random speculation.

That's what I was thinking. I'm one who likes the Wii U Gamepad but I also realize it handicapped Nintendo in a lot of ways. Maybe the cost didn't affect the power as much as we think and instead it was the small form factor?

I'd like to hear more thoughts on whether a device like this will force them into a high launch price. It needs to be affordable but if the NX controller is close to the leaked images I can't imagine it would be cheaper than the Wii U was at launch.

Some random thoughts. If the leaked photos would be the handheld, maybe you can press the analog sticks in so it's easier to put in your pocket?

Wait, hang on. About 12-24 hours ago many or most people were still considering this a well-done fake. What's going on now to make it convincing? What did I miss?

No this is more like the offscreen mode.

"Button Images" sounds like a goofy label to put on a table of contents. You could be talking about how to set up buttons, the preset arrangements and how to use them, but nope. It's just going to tell you where the image folder is.

I believe they're already meant to click like L3 and R3 on PS4, so it would be a matter of time before you push them down to the "pocket" position while playing :p

Wait, hang on. About 12-24 hours ago many or most people were still considering this a well-done fake. What's going on now to make it convincing? What did I miss?

We're not talking about these "leaks" but announcing the NX in general.

I don't think Nintendo's ever said it would launch this year.

Then Nintendo is absolutely fucked, especially if they're launching the console first.

It's going to be a non-issue when they actually announce the thing.

Perhaps. But all this "no buttons" nonsense would be greatly mitigated by a proper explanation and some good 'ol Nintendo games.

Hmm. Sean Noonan's moon landing image? ShockingAlberto's saying he heard the last leak was legit way back at the start of the thread? McNamara in the OP? Maybe I'm missing another insider wink or two, but this all smells very real by my analysis even if the dev kit isn't quite a consumer quality build.
