Nioh Thread: Defy Death

Made it up to the first boss for now. He 2 shot me and I quit because it was getting late haha. Can't wait to try to beat him tomorrow, I really like this game so far. How many stages are there in the beta? Also, what do those little frog things do that you can guide to the shrine?

Just beat all in the Beta, here are my thoughts:

+ Love that they aren't dumping the loot as much as the alpha gave.
+ Loot management is cool (talking about the use of the blacksmith and familiarity).
+ Build variety. I rolled mainly the katana (esp. my lightning raikiri for twilight missions) and used a hammer for various encounters, but I saw the spear and dual blades as useful too.

? Do the weapon grades increase? I never noticed any of that if so (aside from the weapon getting more dmg and skills from familiarity).

- Currency system seemed....kind of pointless. I mean aside from buying some items, but they could've just tied it to Amrita.
- A lot of items felt pretty useless to me. Granted, that's the same for most RPGs, so not so much a negative as "standard fare"
- High stance became pretty OP, low stance got nerfed. Really not that balanced. In fact, I found high stance hammer to be like BB's "spin-to-win" axe. Changed it up so I wouldn't get bored.
- Nightmare bosses SUCKED. Period. I would've loved to see different versions of these bosses (think MH or Furi), not just some grunts with the same boss moveset.

Two main stages, two bonus stages, and one tutorial stage.

The green guys are called Kodama, they allow you to unlock certain perks at the shrine such as bonus to Elixir drops or bonus to weapon/armor drops. But they also serves as a means to up your base elixir count. Every 5 you find the number of elixirs that get replenished at the shrine increased by one.

Eg. Find 5 of them and you'll get 4 elixirs. Find 10of them and you'll get 5 elixir etc

Did he finally parry you or something? Learning to perfect dodge his whole moveset almost showed me everything xD

The parry one shot my ass hard

He just seems to have random super armor sometimes, its why when uploading weapons on bosses i just skipped him, he is super boring to fight!
The most interesting thing about him is punishing his wake up with ee...

I really hope they just give you all skills unlocked in full game, and you just choose which ones to use. It was irritating playing without them, was switching weapon to katana and trying to ee pulse at once, completely forgot that came from a skill.

Ah the lightning enhanced double down swing, the combo, and I think the dash have super armor I believe.

I fight him very passively til he does the more telegraphed stuff to proc my attack up then get hyper agressive, the dual sword just frame combo is too good haha takes 2 or 3 to pop the Stam then I just infinite him lol that video has dislikes now xD

Seriously though why does dual swords have evasion+1, its already broken as fuck without it.
Who knows but it's hilarious, in a sense they are more risky to use than the spear for range reasons so I could see what they were going for as you typically gotta be up in their face . Still ends up being a little too much though

Are the twilight missions easier than samurai guy? Because I feel I'm never going to beat him at this point. He kills me in two hits every time.

I think so. As for the samurai, for me I found it easier to dodge and then attack. No more than 2 or 3 attacks at a time.

It's so dumb. I feel the fight allows you to make one mistake and that's it.

It shouldn't require perfect execution.

Watch a couple of YouTube videos to learn him, that's what I always do against a tough boss I have problems with.

Can someone explain why the samurai's horizontal charge slash sometimes can be blocked and sometimes can not? Full stamina both times.

Anyone else have it where the visit another person's game to help out, only to watch that person fight .... nothing? Quite a few times today that happened to me, and I felt bad (especially if the host died to said enemy) because there's a cost to summoning.

Yeah, this is dumb. I got the boss down to 25% a couple of tries but then choked and quit. I've probably died like 40 times to this samurai dude now.

I feel like there's skill involved but also a lot of luck since you depend on what attacks he decides to use and whether he wants to chain them. Sometimes he'll fight fair. Sometimes he'll combo after a stun attack and that's it, you're fucked, maybe five seconds into the battle.

The stupid charged slash drains almost all of your stamina if blocked, so unless you're on full stamina when he does it, it's a tradeoff between getting 70% of your HP gone in one hit, or getting stunned so he can follow with a 70% riposte. And sometimes he does it twice in a row, because fuck you.

I know, I know, "here's a video of a guy killing him while naked and playing with his toes." I don't care. Just because someone is extra good at hard games doesn't make it less hard, that just means that person is crazy skilled. This fight is just stupid hard for the sake of being hard.

There's a cheese method if you really want to know:

Use the boulder at the back of the arena and just keep going around it. Stay in high stance. KEEP YOUR DISTANCE! This will make him use his charge slash, and when he does just dip a little out of reach behind the rock and the hit the charge attack. Immediately get out of there and repeat.

The only thing that annoyed me in that fight is that he would still attack me when it indicated he had no stamina.

a lot of my threads involve me fucking up somehow. Perhaps I'm a moron?
Ugh. Started a new game going for a Dual build and Onryoki is just wrecking me. Took me maybe 5-10 tries with my axe the first go-round, but I've probably fought him 20 times now with my dual set-up and I can't do it.

SO frustrating haha.

It's really not even close. My interest in FFXV is in the negative zeroes infinity, haha.

I know that's not a thing. Shut up
Basically. It's funny looking back at the first trailer where it was announced. I was super interested in that game. What it became, this road trip with your boy band friends hanging a "no gurls allowed" sign on their transforming car... The only thing that holds interest for me now is the cool city environments and creature design... But I think nioh will deliver a better experience with that

I was about to have a "fuck! how the fuck do you beat this guy!" post in this thread when on my second to last try for the night I figured out that the second boss
on the boat
is trying to teach me to use stances and stab in back.

Cuz I was doing pisspoor damage and dying a lot and now I can get to the second phase reasonably easily.

really enjoying this game, just need a better handle on some of the finer points.

Let's say that the full game would have character customisation for co-op and/or PvP, how would they handle the progression for this multiplayer character?

Night 2- Boss 1 is still kicking my ass. Called in a coop partner, was doing okay and then I rolled under one of the boss's boulders. :(

I really like this game... but it's sooooooo frustrating for me :\

And I got the Platinum in Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1 and 2 and finished Bloodborne's DLC in NG+3.

But the frustration in this game it's just too much for me to handle.

Wishing the best for the game and the team, it's really a good game but sadly not for me.

Im only quoting you as an example so don't take this as me personally referring to you.

I've been seeing this statement a lot. Experienced Souls players being crushed by Nioh. I'm not going to say something edgy like Souls is actually easy but Souls never requires player to learn complex executions- You just need to learn to use 4 buttons - "Attack, Block, Dodge, Heal".

Nioh is part Souls, but it's also has the DNA of a Character Action game.... Particularly the hardest of the Character Action games lol.

That's not totally true. Parry, riposte and backstabs are huge aspects of mastering the Souls games.

Having said that, Nioh is definitely kicking my ass in the boss department.

He's got two of them. One involves him running forward, and the other is in place (both dash forward just before the slash). I think the blockable one has a silver slice and the unblockable one is gold?

As good as any thread to ask but, does this new beta hint towards other playable characters or character customization? I remember people telling me that it looked like there might be more than one playable character from the first beta.

Game looks great, but Discount Geralt is a massive buzzkill and a dealbreaker for me.

Yeah I'd really appreciate the option to play as a female character, but whatever. By the time you get a few items of gear you can't really see the face anyway.

Not sure I'd want to play a female character designed by Team Ninja ;) and of course I play with the Hide Helmet option on anyway!

Seriously, I would greatly prefer a character creator too, in a game like this, but I've come to terms with Samurai Geralt I guess.

Yeah this game is as much Ninja Gaiden as it is Dark Souls, I still don't really have much of the combat down but just running around and getting pot-shots in on the bosses has managed to net me the DLCs still. Will get deeper into learning combat and the whole stance-swapping with the actual release.

Well, it certainly is true that where previous gaming experience is concerned, having played both Souls and something like DMC4 using Uncle Dante is a major boost in learning Nioh. Having only Souls under ones belt gives one only a part of the equation, and since one expects to do well because of the Souls-DNA in Nioh, the impact of still being curb-stomped will be all the greater. I think character-action gamers might have easier time adjusting to the Souls-DNA than the other way around.

I personally find Nioh very refreshing, as it is both new and familiar at the same time. Much like Bloodborne was in its own way, but even more so.

Awhile ago there was a thread about game mechanics people never use, I think Dark Souls' parry would be my pick lol (but I use Bloodborne's parry all the time)

Point is though, I'm not saying Souls doesn't have the depth, it just doesn't have the complexity in execution- all those three things require only the push of a single button so mastery is only in the timing.

That's true enough. I'd say the skill barrier isn't necessarily lower because of it, though. It's usually lower in Souls games for other reasons (game is actually more forgiving than you'd think, you can take a few hits, partial invincibility while knocked down, etc.). Games can be mechanically simple but have a high skill barrier, a good example would be Ys games especially on nightmare modes, and of course the hardest parts of Soulsborne (Orphan of Kos, Defiled Watchdog, Fume Knight, twin tigers, etc.).

But yeah I guess if you mix a super high skill ceiling with complex mechanics you'd have one hell of a beast. I don't think Nioh is that, though, since I manage. Whereas I rage quit a Ninja Gaiden game on the 360 really early on. xD

That's kind of the unfortunate thing about this game. The first definitively female character we have is Hina-enmo and she is basically a succubus...which, in fairness, is true to the mythology and also is pretty tame relative to a lot of Team Ninja female characters. There are other female japanese mythical figures they could have went with that didn't necessarily have to be sexualized. Amazake-babaa, Harionago, Jorogumo, Kiyohime....

But still, I'd have appreciated something more tasteful. At first, I thought the blacksmith was female, and thought that was pretty cool, you barely ever see a female blacksmith, but apparently no one is sure thanks to that good old friend androgyny that comes up in so many japanese products.

So yeah, I'm with you. I would like a female playable character that isn't overly sexualized.
