Sony game division generates more revenue and profit and growth. MS had to spend $80B on acquisitions to be closer to Sony, will have to make more big acquisitions to have more revenue than them. And profit.. well, let's avoid that and hope that somewhere in the very long term they turn all this into profit.
Sony's game division is more successful than them mostly because the software sales on their console. Their catalog is the main selling point to sell a record amount of consoles and to have their users buying a record amount of games per console. So having their own games selling great and winning a ton of awards helps here. So having these monster numbers coming from console they also expand to and grow in VR, subs, mobile, PC or movies/tv shows but as secondary support channels that provide extra profit and fans. Sony is growing in all these areas, so even if some of them fail they will continue growing.
And these software sales of their console are spread between many games. Losing a few top ones would have a tiny impact on their total userbase and revenue, which would be compensated by their growth. Plus MS acquired Mojang, Zenimax and ABK and decided to continue supporting their (at least existing) top IPs on PS, so won't lose them. Same goes with Bungie. Both Sony and MS benefit from keeping them multi. They may keep other games exclusive, but the age of console platform holders having all their 1st party games full exclusive for their consoles is gone (outside Nintendo).

Those two sites break down activity for Destiny 2. Not sure how accurate it is but I also didn't realize how popular it is as a game. I only ever played the first game on PS3 for a bit, I thought it was great but I don't really play MMOs too much.
Sony can get 20 bungies for what MS paid, over a couple of years and Than Sony can also call them selves publisher .

Ok . Would you like to inform me what does publishing rights mean ? If bungie develop and publish the game it self, how is Sony getting all the money ?
From my understanding. Publishing the game means everyone from planning to marketing to funding to profit they get from the game after release . Am I wrong ?

From a financial perspective, yes absolutely.
This would be like saying "if Mojang, a subsidiary of MS, publish minecraft how does MS get the money?"
They are owned by the parent company. The revenue, profits, etc are part of the parent company profits and revenue.

If Sony acquired SE they'd get IPs like Final Fantasy (that includes the biggest MMO in the market), IP's that do well in Japan like Dragon Quest, story-driven IP's like Tomb Raider, they'd get Deus Ex, Life Is Strange, they have other businesses Sony is also a part of like manga / anime. It would also mean Sony would get 100% of all studios making marvel games as far as i know.
It's the perfect fit. And they could also do something about how mismanaged the old Eidos studios are.
Nothing dumb about this one, honestly.

err...why didn't Sony buy everything they did so far until the day they actually just did?
1. Square-Enix might not want to sell
2. Sony wasn't spending a lot on acquisitions before, now they are.
3. MS started acquiring everything and Sony doesn't want to lose IPs that have always been connected to PlayStation.
4. Other players are entering this business and Sony wants to secure their position.
Things change. Just because you don't buy a studio / publisher in 2020 doesn't mean you won't be interested in 2022. Sony was paying them for timed exclusive games...they know now that's not enough.
I could keep writing reasons but you get the picture.

Destiny has a large user base and has recurring revenue. They're also talented at what they do and sharing that knowledge with other Sony studios is a benefit. The recurring revenue from Destiny will help Sony's bottom line. Why would you take an MMO shooter and remove a large portion of its userbase (XBOX)? That doesn't make any sense. People aren't going to buy a Sony console because it has Destiny and current PS owners aren't going to jump on Destiny if it turned exclusive. MS is taking a disruption approach with their purchases but there is no guarantee that people will ditch playstation and go to XBOX for COD. I'm sure some will but it could be negligible in the long run. Sony is likely just trying to gain more assets and revenue. 1st party single player experiences make sense to have exclusivity. An MMO being exclusive would be a dumb move.
This Bungie purchase isn't a response to MS buying Activision, deals like this don't happen so quickly and Sony/Bungie confirmed as much. Sony likely just wants Bungie's knowledge and recurring revenue.

If this is Sony's plan going forward, they really might be preparing themselves for a future where they're a large 3rd party publisher (that might also have a hardware platform of their own, but stuff won't be exclusively released on it).
A lot of stuff they've been doing lately (this acquisition which seems to give them zero exclusive games, all the PC releases, etc) makes it seem like they're not all that concerned with having people play specifically on PlayStation hardware anymore.
The PS5 might be the last PlayStation.

People dont realize just how much gaming exploded since last gen and especially since the pandemic. The big boys are paying attention and you just have to see what Tencent has been upto to realize how the time is now to buy up whatever you can or you will be the one getting acquired.
To show how much times have changed, the PS2, Sony's most successful console made a total of $2 billion in profit for the entire generation. The PS division made $3 billion in profit in the last fiscal year alone. PS+ has 46 million subscribers. That thing alone is worth almost $3 billion and looking at how trash the games have been over the last few months, it is pretty much all profit. Add in 30% MTX from Fortnite, warzone and Genshin and sony is making $2 billion from those games alone.
We are in a crazy economic boom. Everyone is spending money. Robolox has 50 million active users and that is a platform for kids who need their dad's credit card to buy stuff on there. Companies are sitting on record cash. Even sony has $25 billion in cash reserves when they were in debt when the PS4 gen started. If they sit on that cash, and dont go out make big purchases, take on debt, they will lose. I always looked at Amazon and Netflix growing out of their ass taking on debt, not giving a shit about profits and wondered why Sony never did it. Well, they should have. Because now they are going to overpay and get into bidding wars.
Good thing is investors now realize that Sony will have to take on debt to get bigger, and they might just treat their stock like Amazon and Netflix. Sony just has to sell their vision.

I don't know that much, I'm just providing hot takes based on the info available.
Sony clearly saw some value in buying Bungie and I'm assuming the recurring revenue and talent/knowledge were aspects of why they wanted to buy Bungie. It makes sense to me, I'm mostly just trying to get people clamoring for exclusivity to see the bigger picture.

Yeah, multiplatform means PS and PC, the exact same as how MS use that term.
Some wishy washy statement like 'we want Destiny on all platforms' doesn't mean literally every console under the sun, IOS and Android. It just means it'll be available on A console and PCs.
Not sure why people are seriously expecting future Xbox releases. All of this PR is exactly the same as the Bathesda and Activision press releases.

They are preparing to build their live service empire.
Destiny is one of the most popular live service games out there which Bungie have been managing basically solo.
Call them in and/or use their backend tech for whatever your next live service game is and you are pretty much golden.
We know Sony is preparing some multiplayer shit, i dont think its even particularly hidden anymore.
Capcom/Square/Sega will keep making "PS" exclusives and there being outside the US doesnt help when you need to call them to help make that "COD/BR/Live service game" from that studio that you know is in the US...(face it Sony Computer Entertainment is in the west)
No they are not. Mojang AB is the publisher on every other platform. They are subsidiaries of MS.

Bungie were looking to sell/investment because right now it's really hard for studios to hire and expand their resources.

I tried to search online to see who is the publisher ( specially for the newer content after they have been bought ) and I can't find anything outside that Xbox live account is required to play Minecraft now.
Meaning all the money from server hosting to skins or whatever Mta money goes to MS .
Again though . What doesn bungie benefit from self publishing the game and all the extra cost of the rewards go to Sony ?

Their games will remain multiplatform but maybe we will see some exclusives co-developed with them? Like Killzone reboot for example, co-developed by Guerilla and Bungie. Who knows.
