LTTP: Resident Evil 2 R—Braaains, Bullets & Butt-Clenching Terror

I wouldn't classify this game as Metroidvania.

Also, they didn't remake the spiders, which was my biggest gripe. Also some assets, like the blood splats, looked like generic pngs from google images.

Other than that, it's solid 8/10 for me.
I keep forgetting about the lack of spiders, it is one of the few issues with the game, removing those.

But while I see some people throw shade on RE2 remake or remakes in general, little things like seeing the gas station clerk gripping his bloody, bitten neck, update things in such a brilliant way and add such a cool "you are there" feeling that, as atmospheric and as much as I love the pre-rendered backgrounds of the original, make the remake a worthy update.

The series still isn't where I'd expect it to be graphically, considering how good the RE-Remake looks and how old it is.
I disagree completely. The game looks phenomenal as is. Spending dev money on unnecessary GFX is an absolute sinkhole. I think graphics peaked ~2016 and everything after is diminishing returns not worth the effort.

I really don't get the complaints about Mr X, I thought it was super cool the way for the first time a "stalker" enemy was actually a constant presence in a game than something that just teleports in and out.

This game has like 5 enemy types.
Maybe I'm not seeing your perspective but thats not really an issue; this is survival horror game with a rather short runtime and tight hallways/map design. How would you add more enemy types while maintaining balance and not encumbering the loose believability and without sacrificing the horror element?

some people are just retarded

RE2 remake is incredible.

But the randomized for this game is just out of this world.
Completely change every run, with every route being completely different, drops new enemies in the campaign, plenty of completely new items placements…
It even streamlines the tedious parts like the orphanage so it takes 30 seconds to do it.

Truly a Masterpiece.

I can't wait for RE1 next remake to get a randomizer.

2R is rightfully lauded. I think if you aren't a fan of the original then there isn't much wrong with it (although the 2nd scenarios are barely different after a point and that's clear for all to see).

The devs missed some opportunities to really enhance things from the original (zapping system, enemy types, etc), but instead pulled back and that's a shame. So the game's biggest problems are relative to the original as a remake.

NeverYouMind NeverYouMind I look forward to our falling out in the next thread

It's fantastic. It got me absolutely hooked in 2019, and I was really pissed when Sekiro stole its thunder and its GOTY (even if I finally accepted Sekiro's greatness five years later).
The game's sound design is a masterpiece, all right.

I think the only gripes I had with it were 1) no true B-scenarios like in the original, 2) enemies take way too much punishment, and the battles with Birkin especially were more tedious than tense because of this, 3) Claire going commando on Birkin in the lab instead of running away is a bit too much even for her.

Did you take 13 hours for just one campaign, or both? 13 seems way more than necessary for one campaign, unless you're playing on Hard. I remember needing between 6 and 7 hours for my first run with each character.
I played it once on Hard, but that was a bit too much. The game is pretty well balanced on Normal with enemies that can take some obscene amounts of bullets to go down for good. Hard basically requires planning most things in advance, or just resigning yourself to having to redo large portions of the game because most enemies must be kept alive if you want to have enough ammo for the mandatory fights.
Took 13 for both. Played the game on Normal for Leone then assisted for Claire. I heavily utilized the focused leg shots.

How anyone can enjoy this is beyond me. Trial & error section where you have to do everything in a specific way. It may be a bit scary on a first playthrough, but its just slow and annoying overall. Worst section of the whole game.

I loved the boss fights, but not how Zombies would behave in this game. They are absolute bullet sponges in this one. I didn't realize on my first playthrough that you had to let your crosshair focus in order to have a higher chance of crits (why does the game never tell this), so I got really frustrated when Zombies would drop after 4-5 bullets to the head, then get up after a while, then drop after another 3-4 bullets to the head, then get up another time. It would often take 10-13 headshots until a zombie would finally stay dead. So my strategy would become pretty much all game through: make the zombie drop to the ground, position behind him and then knife him to death. And since zombies are by far the most common enemies, this would get super exhausting. Sure you could also just run past them after knocking them down, but this was by far the most logical way when you are on your first playthrough and want to explore.
Another thing thats super annoying about zombies are the animations when they manage to grab you. Especially when they are on ground, it feels so long and its always the same animation. I heavily prefer it when you could just smash or kick their heads off in the OG when they are grabbing you.
I find it amusing that my experience playing as Sherry was completely opposite to yours; I did it all in one go without a single fail state. Maybe I just got lucky or had good intuition.

As for zombies, I agree with you that the RNG bullets (not really but you know what I mean) are rather frustrating. I got luvky with watching a random yt short explaining the crit system just before playing the game, so I made sure that every shot was a crit, and left about ~30% zombies crawling around.

While I loved this version of Mr X, I can see some people not liking the stalker mechanic in these games precisely because being a constant presence. It feels being more exhausting than scary for them. Some people think horror works better when it's not about stressing you almost all of the time. Horror doesn't work in the same way for every person.

About this remake in general, I loved it and it's still my favourite entry of the RE Engine era. In comparison with the original, I would say the remake is better in survival mechanics (the original was a little too easy to my taste after the first game), but the og RE2 is a better package (more enemy types, better use of both campaigns, better story, better music, etc). Both are great games in its own merits anyway.
