Asha Sharma: Next Xbox Project Name: "Helix" - Will 'lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games'

Wouldn't that be a huge, HUGE gap between both machines?

yeah, but since the PS6P will effectively be the baseline anyway... it can't really hurt 🤷

they could use the same amount of shaders and CPU cores of course, and just clock it way higher, since it doesn't need to run on a battery and can have a decent heatsink in it. and then get a decent performance boost over the PS6P, while having around the same cost for the parts on the mainboard.

play your Xbox and PC games

I guess that makes my man adam a PC gamer too.

It will almost certainly be the Windows PC store. Which means they wont get many PC gamers buying one.
They'll have to compete with Steam Machine. Basically DOA unless they get back in the fight with Sony and distinguish themselves somehow. They mentioned going back to exclusives. I don't see how that works financially but we'll see.

I'm really curious how they plan on doing that without any sort of virtualization but I am guessing it's something to do with the AMD chip
Yeah, the custom AMD chip is the key for full BC functionality. I wonder if AMD will offer something for PC builds too? Probably not but that would be cool to bring all my games to PC.

I think the portable is going to be more akin to a SteamDeck to a PC spec.

And less like what Nintendo is doing.

The part that I don't get the most. It basically kills XGP/XBL revenue stream for good.

Some big AI brain moves here.

I don't get it either. Seems like stupid decision.

They're going to be losing money, unless they do something like lock access to third party stores behind GP.

It will run all the stores

I have said for about 2 years the next gen "console" would run Steam but this thing sounds more and more like a PC with Xbox BC baked in

Yes, I know you've said that. We've discussed it plenty of times. I'm just reacting to what she is saying here.

the Steam Machine is not even in the race dude... it's a system that is worse than current gen consoles... and it can't run some of the most popular games without installing a separate OS.

Play pc games purchased through Xbox store only or support for other storefronts too?

That's the big question
Be pretty disingenuous to say it plays your pc games but only mean those bought from MSFT's store when she knows Steam is the big fish in pcgaming.

but what I'm saying is that having a low end system will not be an issue in terms of game compatibility, because every dev will also already ship on the PS6P anyway, so it won't change anything for the high end system, which also would get games that run on PS6P, no matter if Microsoft also has a low end machine or not.

Already passed.
Their vision is dead and i can get their exclusives elsewhere. When good exclusives get locked behind their console - i will reconsider.

I think they will be stupid if they dont include a years sub to Gamepass Ulitmate with this, especially its a very high price.

Interesting. How much could it be this MS pc hybrid? Will it also be release by different brand using the name, like Asus or Dell?

I'm really curious to see how this will work, how it performs and what the cost will be.
Helix would need a full Xbox/Windows OS revamp on the software side, this can't be just a console version of the Xbox Full Screen Experience the ROG uses. While that kinda works, it's not completely streamlined and not that friendly to use.

It's also a really interesting time now... SteamOS/Steam Machine would be there direct competition. SteamOS "just works", and is completely gaming focused first. However, depending on the user - it could be confusing for the average normie when they want to install games from other libraries/launchers. This is where Project Helix may be the "easier" option... But also, that's where the cost would come into play. We assume the Steam Machine would be cheaper than Helix, but this is all way too early to tell.

What do you mean?
What I mean is, I don't think the handheld is just a low powered PS6 and the console is the same has the handheld, just higher frequencies.

It's more akin to having a SteamDeck (but more powerful since newer tech) next to your 9070XT/5070Ti. Not a portable inside the console with higher clocks (like what Nintendo does plugged in).

Microsoft has something that not every other company, not even Sony, has.

They can fire off as many shots as they want to see which one works.

But as Steve Jobs, may he rest in peace, said...

It has always been a company without talent and without people who truly believe in their product.

We still don't know what they mean by "Xbox games" since Xbox doesn't mean anything anymore.

We know pretty well it will have BC with past consoles, but will it have a real next-gen console "mode" or is that just going to be Windows?

I'll die on this semantic hill if it's the latter. It's a PC that can also play old XBox games, not a console that lets you play PC games. Calling it a hybrid is fair, but if it's only last-gen console games then it's just going to be playing.. Windows games lol

What?, outside of the odd Indie game or RTS game (and even RTS games sometimes have controller support) pretty much every PC games have controller support.

Its not 2005 anymore.
What world are you living in?? A vast majority only have partial controller support. Shit a bunch don't even have steam deck support

They mean Xbox Games for the "backwards compatibility chip" inside

It's a PC for anything else

Is my drunk prediction coming true?!?? Magnus announcement in November for da 25th anniversary?@?!!??

NOSTRODRUNKUS FOR DA WIN!!!

Or they know what Sony wants them to know....

Sony and MS both work with AMD, and both know AMD's roadmap. it's hard to keep stuff secret from the public in this day and age when developing hardware like that, and even harder to keep that info from other parties working with the same company.

the craziest twist Sony pulled was their 8GB of DDR5 memory back in the PS4.
Microsoft (and the public) heard Sony will use 4GB, so MS thought they have an ace up their sleeves by betting on a larger 8GB RAM pool plus esRAM. the big upset was Sony swapping to 8GB DDR5 basically last minute.

something like that isn't really possible anymore. big changes like that would be predictable now. console design is way more streamlined and predictable in general now, while leaks are far more common and more precise as well.

so, nah, Microsoft knows exactly what hardware Sony will use, and Sony knows exactly what Microsoft will use. the only real variable that can change last minute these days are clock speeds.

That's what I suspect but we have a couple of insiders here convinced that's not true and that there's a real closed-platform next-gen console "mode" or something like that.

So is it a PC that I can or can't upgrade that is a question I need to know
I'm pretty sure it will be partly upgradable (RAM, SSD) PC made by multiple vendors like Asus and Lenovo. With huge if: if this thing even survives until it's proper reveal lol.
