How IMDb Ratings Work

While IMDb is primarily a website dedicated to movies, it is also a massive database where video games are rated and ranked by millions of users. The system uses a weighted average to ensure fairness:

1. Regular Voters: Only votes from frequent users are counted for the Top 250 to prevent "score bombing."
2. Minimum Threshold: A game must reach a specific number of total votes to qualify for the ranking.
3. The Balance: The final score balances the average rating against the total volume of votes, keeping legendary titles at the top.

What a garbage list. I don't know how their voting algorithm works, but it's trash. But p that most of the top games are more "cinematic" in nature, as opposed to being, ya know, actually great games.

But some of this is just baffling. Like, Astro Bot is higher than literally every other Mario game. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Astro Bot. It was my GOTY in 2024. But it still doesn't hold a candle to most 3D Mario games.

E33 belongs nowhere near the top 5. Top 5 should only be reserved for groundbreaking games that raised the bar and pushed the medium forward. Super Mario 64, Half-Life 2, BG3, GTA III, Thief, MGS, ALTTP, FF VII, those sorts of games. E33 is a good game but among the greatest ever? Not even close.

Perhaps you could also reorder the list so re-releases and compilations count towards the base game? E.g. TLOU and TLOU Part 1 are the same thing, same goes for the likes of MGS and the re-releases and HD versions being split, etc.

E33 belongs nowhere near the top 5. Top 5 should only be reserved for groundbreaking games that raised the bar and pushed the medium forward. Super Mario 64, Half-Life 2, BG3, GTA III, Thief, MGS, ALTTP, FF VII, those sorts of games. E33 is a good game but among the greatest ever? Not even close.

I think they added "what would sony fanboy think?" in the algorithm because some of those games are in ridiculous positions.

In top 10 only truly great games here are TW3, Zelda and BG3, I can maybe agree with TLOU1 being somewhere close but why it's polluting two places on the list (same fucking game)? RDR2 is good but not top 10 material...
