Sony hikes up PS5 pricing in April: PS5 – $649.99, PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99 PS5 Pro – $899.99, Portal $249.99

Edit: adamsapple adamsapple @Bondo @Kacho If you think this is funny, wait until you see the price of the Playstation 6! You'll really fall of your chair :lollipop_grinning:

I'm at a point where I can't afford such luxuries anymore. And with next gen coming up, the 1.000€ barrier will break for sure. I'm glad I built a PC last year, at least that way I can still play the modern stuff for a while. The state of gaming rn is absolute embarrassment imo.

Sony should cancel any launch plans for ps6 for next year, if they haven't already

I highly doubt it would be less than 1000$ in the current environment and goodbye to sales if they launch at that price.

Wonder when Xbox and nintendo will announce their price increase
There is a lot of nuance to these things. If Sony is far along on the development of PS6, they will not cancel it. even if it means they come in at $1000. I personally have always pegged the price of the PS6 to be whatever the PS5pro cost at launch, so if a PS5pro is going to be $900, then unless something changes between now and fall next year, the PS6 will be at least that much.

But yh, sony wouldn't cancel, because it doesnt matter, nor is there any gurantee that doing so means that prices comes down in 2026... what of if they go up again? Sony would be better off selling the PS6 as a premium $1000 console, and just settling for the fact that they still have PS5s in circulation. When or if prices start to drop, then they drop the PS6 price accordingly.

There is also the fact that by now, Sony may have already made an advanced contract agreement for RAM and storage for the PS6. Those usually happen 6 - 18months before they are needed, its actually a business requirement these days to lock in prices.

As weird as it may sound, these price hikes may even be to offset what they know they would be paying for RAM in 12 months in an attempt to keep PS6 launch prices.... "not crazy".

And didn't Xbox already have their price increase?

Gabe is not even sure his hardware can muster RAM, let alone settle on release window or prices.

My bet is that it's vaporware and Valve will simply stop mentioning it just like they did with their "previous" console. But I can also see them selling it without RAM, just use your computer RAM instead.

Even with all these console price increase, the second hand market on xbox and ps consoles doesn't seem to be going up. Still pretty easy to get one cheaper then they were at launch.

Sony is gouging prices and nVidia is out here gaslighting us that the future of gaming requires a $3000 GPU. Hopefully developers and publishers properly read the room and stop forcing specs higher and higher for now reason. We are well past diminishing returns.

Generally, I never get an electronic item second hand cause even if they shine it up on the outside, it's hard to predict the wear and tear the device might have had on the inside, any previous RROD/YLOD equivalent issues etc.

You're also foregoing the generous 1 to 3 year manufacturer's warranty.

Glad I got my Pros at launch. I do think that it would be generational suicide to put out a PS6 console next year if the prices don't come down. Most people can't afford to live let alone spend $1000 on a console.

Let's not forget the stimulus checks and extra unemployment people were getting when this gen launched (at least in the states).

Sony GAF has repeatedly assured me this will sell more than the PS4. How are they holding up right now?

Surely they will keep winning the NPD right Sony fans ? Them selling more the past few months surely had nothing to do with the Black Friday bundles being available through March.

How do you increase the price of old technology.
Make you wonder what they'll want for new tech
Wafer cost went up. RAM cost went up. SSD cost went up. Inflation drove up materials, labor and manufacturing cost in general.

it's a shit show all around. I also can't help but think that Sony is using this opportunity to make the hardware a bit more profitable as well.

Not really most great games now are under 30$ and can run on a low-mid tier 10yo gpu.

I know I can play till I die with my 53 years old man backlog but just cause I'm ok I can't be happy to see that gaming industry is all suffering from AI bubble and international tensions.

I feel like some of you are completely blind to the world around you and what's been happening.
When the answer is to raise the price and do a "fuck you got mine" response to economic affairs, they deserve the ire. The excuse for a price hike due to economic factors is just coprorations passing the cost along to us and never feeling the financial ramifications for themselves. You need to see right through it. Let me remind you, they keep raising prices in the face of record profits every single year.

Nothing that was done back then to reduce costs works in the current landscape.
according to the internets Sony has a 16% profit margin already on the PS5.
Add in 70% profit on software and PS Plus.
They are doing just fine.
At the very least they shouldnt be raising prices.

Yep, throw in taxes and stand and it's a cool $1000 in US. Add 3 years of PSN on top and PC doesn't seem that bad of a deal.
Back during the summer I was trying to warn people. You could build a 5060ti 16GB system for ~$950. That was the original price of a PS5 Pro and three years of base PS+. But the PC was more powerful.

Americans now paying the price Canadians have been paying all gen long. Chaos ensues.

Yall gotta learn to buy things off Facebook marketplace lol.

I just got a brand new Pro for 700 a week ago. It retails or 1000 + Tax in Canada. BEFORE this price hike.

What a STEAL that was.

MSRP doesnt exist to me, its 100% marketplace for all gaming hardware. fuck paying these greedy companies.

I saw an article recently about gaming becoming a rich man's hobby, and these pricing changes seem to lend credence to that claim.

I'm glad I got my PS5 and Switch 2 when I did. This is insane.

I don't see how the PS6 comes out next year if the market is like this. Also the AshaBox is going to be more like $2000. And the Steam Machine is probably canceled at this point.

That's exactly what it is, they are out to make a profit so extra costs are passed to the consumers so they can continue making a profit. Not exactly a novel concept, this is how the economy operates. If companies are not making a profit then they don't have any reason to do business. As much as I would like them to be a charity and eat all the costs, it's unrealistic to expect them to do so especially when living under such uncertain and unprecedented conditions. It boggles my mind how People can attribute changes in electronic prices to just greed, it's like they haven't watched the news in months or haven't been to a grocery store to see how even basic necessities have skyrocketed in price.

This price is too high. I just can't see PS5 | PS5 Pro at this level of pricing working. Consoles are supposed to make up for being a limited purpose device by having a lower entry point for the mainstream. 649$ entry for a PS5 is just too god damn expensive. And if they feel the need to go that far on a 16 x 1GB GDDR6-14Gbps console, it's hard to imagine how hard they'd go on the rumored PS6.

Sony should pivot trying to provide value through hardware to providing value through software. More games, etc.
