I've been getting my consoles at launch for several years now because I see it as a way of maximizing their value by maximizing the amount of time I own and use them.

However, I almost skipped the PS5 launch because my Steam and PS4 backlogs were so big, I didn't feel like there was a need to rush. Ultimately, the real deciding factor in my buying a PS5 at launch was the inclusion of Demon's Souls in the lineup (the PS3 version is one of my favorite games).

But now, I still feel like this generation has barely even started, even though we're over five years in. And with Sony's recent announcement of huge PlayStation console price hikes, I'm concerned about what that implies for next-gen pricing in general. My backlog is also getting insane.

So, is anyone else who typically buys consoles at launch thinking about pumping the brakes on next-gen?

For me, it's not as much a money thing as a value issue. I just don't see where they can take console gaming that's going to justify the cost of an expensive new console. And their game output volume and variety this gen are the worst they've ever been.

PS6 is going to have some great exclusives at launch for me to jump in as well as the price. If it's a 1000 dollars or close to it that's where I tap out.

If WE sit out the start of next gen...you realize it's over, right? We're the hardcore, day 1 buyers the hardware manufacturers rely on to pick their wares up; if they have to rely on the casuals, they're cooked.

I not even got my PS5 at launch. Got a really price discount. Last year in Brazil a phone company TIM was selling PS5 DE for R$1999,90. Was a good deal after all.

I'll be buying a PS6 day one. Why wait? You'll probably be able to play all the PS4/PS5 games on the PS6 anyway if you have a huge backlog.

Nope.

What's the point of waiting? We have full backwards compatibility and hardware prices are going UP over time rather than down.

You might as well get that console on day one.

Yeah unless the PS6 launches with GOTY level exclusives I don't see any reality where I jump on board until 2029/2030. Most of the games I play are AA JRPGs anyway.

I didn't jump onboard with PS5 until summer 2024, then I sold it Xmas 2025 and just hopped on the Pro for $500 about a month ago. I honestly feel like I'm good with hardware for the immediate/not so immediate future. Nintendo hasn't convinced me I need to upgrade my Switch OLED yet.

95% of my gaming nowadays is smaller scale indies and retro. Like I was using a Legion Go as my main system for like 2 years and I was perfectly good with it.

Depends on what's available at launch for me. Good games that are exclusive must-plays is first factor. Price is also a factor. Can't really justify another $1000 purchase.

Kinda sad really. I used to get both Playstation and Xbox consoles at launch as well. Later I would get Nintendo. This gen saw me forced into buying Xbox alone though I had the funds for both...which eventually led me to just doubling down on PC.

There is a magic about opening a brand new console that I feel may be lost now. Mainly because this generation felt more like a PC upgrade, rather than a generational shift as past generations have.

I will not blindly buy another console. It is on them to give me a good reason to buy and exclusivity isn't enough. I'm content with my PC and it's many games.

I dont have any current gen consoles, i play pc and previous consoles

For me it depends on games or exclusives, this gen is shit I dont knoeñw how Next gen Will be.

Not a chance. We are at that second-half moment in the generation where the games are starting to need more power.

And guess what...

I was going to skip it since Sony was doing PC ports, I can mostly wait to play their games due to my backlog. If they truly are not doing PC anymore...then maybe? Depends on if they are still gung-ho about GAAS rather than what made them great during the PS3 and PS4 eras.

The PS6 is supposed to be cheaper than the PS5 right (or almost the same price)? Not sure why anyone (looking to jump in) would skip it if so.

Honestly maybe, I don't want to buy another Sony console and Xbox seems like dead so unless something changes this might be it for me

If its a solid release lineup, BC, et. Wife and I are blessed financially, just comes down to the games tickling our rectum.

I would like to see an efficient, lean console with solid first party / exclusive day 1 releases.

I'm jumping to purchase my third generation of consoles where Fortnite, Minecraft, and COD#X are the most played games.

I can't wait to get remasters of 5 year old games that cost $70.

I can't wait for half baked rehashes of games that were just OK 15 years ago.

I can't wait for thus "industry" to finally die.

Depends on the games. Will there be exclusives? Like, any? Good ones, dare I ask?

I've become increasingly unimpressed with consoles over time, because the hardware just seems to lag further and further behind (and not just because generations are longer now) and the exclusives have basically evaporated outside of Nintendo. Even the really weird, niche Japanese games rarely stay on console anymore.

I can't and I won't since my PC is basically on the level of the next gen consoles. There's still a bunch of upcoming games I'm looking forward to like

Tides of Annihilation
Dawn of War 4
Grand Theft Auto VI
Resident Evil Code Veronica Remake
Resident Evil 0 Remake
Resident Evil 10
Resident Evil 1 ReRemake
Resident Evil whatever
Witcher 4
Elder Scrolls VI
Fallout 5
Half Life 3
Darksiders 4
Prototype 3
Stellar Blade 2
Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3
Upcoming big Starcraft game

I just bought a new PC and I am rocking games at max settings.

I will absolutely be sitting out the start of the next generation. Something I've never done before, and I've been gaming since the NES.

My backlog is YEARS long as a 46 year old man with a wife 2 kids and other hobbies - golf - college sports - etc

Dynamic pricing was IT for me. I'm blessed to have more than enough disposable income for the inflation price hikes but charging some one price and others another for a mass production product is IMMORAL and reprehensible

No. I'm not a broke boy. I make good money teaching piano, I've got rental income and dividends from bank shares.

We're going for the record of locked thread this week lol

On a serious note, probably not buying at launch. Will most likely wait and see what the non cross gen games are like.

It's not as sure of a thing now that I have a good PC.

Looking at Nintendo, I have exactly 3 Switch 2 games after 9 months. I had at least twice as many WiiU games after that much time.

For Sony, I've had my PS5 for 4 years now and have played 1 new Sucker Punch game, and 0 new Naughty Dog games. Naughty Dog potentially skipping an entire generation is a disaster.

The value of these machines is growing more and more reliant on quality first party software. Sony and Nintendo have to remember this or yeah I think a lot of us will skip / wait on the next gen.

There won't be enough new games for me to care about in many years to warrant a purchase of a new console, so I'll likely save my cash for PS7. I sat out the PS4 gen. Only got a Wii during the PS3 gen.

I'll probably get a Switch 2 once it has a better library and Mario/Zelda.

The thing is that we don't need new consoles. The current ones are largely powerful enough.

They are going to ask a premium price for changes that will be barely visible.

yes unless a ps6 exclusive and not a cross gen game makes me go day1 I'm sitting it out until physint is out.

I'm grateful I abandoned Xbox and PlayStation this generation and built a PC.

For me, consoles are only Nintendo now; at least they're more reasonably priced, have the exclusives I like, and offer portability in a hybrid model, unlike PlayStation and Xbox currently.

The last Sony console I bought was a used PS4 Pro. The seller even put in a 1TB SSD before he shipped it out, real nice of the guy.

I'm not even thinking about the next gen, and as for this generation, I'm still unsure if it's even started for me to sit it out.

I didn't get a PS5 at launch either but that's due to the supply strane of the pandemic.
I did pre-order a pro though

I've been day 1 one Xbox One, Xbox One X and Series X and it's a real possibility I'll be missing launch for Helix.

"Next Gen" is a much tougher sell than it used to be when you have little to no exclusives and diminishing returns on hardware advancement

It's impossible to make any kind of judgement until the systems, their pricing, and release dates are actually confirmed. At this point it's all pointless speculation based on rumors and leaks.
