Sony hikes up PS5 pricing in April: PS5 – $649.99, PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99 PS5 Pro – $899.99, Portal $249.99

There weren't planning on releasing next year anyway. No chance. I didn't trust that Kepler2 rumor from the start. He doubled down on it too. And the Gerstmann quote was pure speculation, or him just parroting the other report.

Anyway, this is crazy. NINE HUNDRED U.S. DOLLARS 🤯. Helix is a lock for $1200 next year.

Even if things improve somewhat by Fall 2028, the PS6 is probably still gonna be around $800. Remember that once this price range has been conditioned into the consumer's minds, they're not gonna suddenly abandon that and have a lower price for PS6. It's what happens with inflation. Covid and the Ukraine war caused inflation to skyrocket but it's come down since then… guess what? Prices are still considerably higher than before those times. Companies have no incentive to lower them when consumers have been conditioned to accept them as normal now.

They designed this console two years ago and you say they didn't plan to release it in 2027? Give me a break...

If they delay it, it will be 6-12 months, not to fucking 2030 lol.

But if they can sell 60 million consoles at a profit to the people who also spend big on subscriptions and software they may end up better off financially.

Man NO WAY LOL!!!! Sony would be 100x better if they could sell 120 million consoles at $600 or less and getting those 30% rips, than selling 60 million at $900. Or were you just trolling us?

Excluding portal don't most people here already have at least one of those?

U are right, kinda, if we look at that price hike in a vacuum, otherwise we gotta admit its a trend and price of future brand new ps6 gonna be even above that new ps5pr0 price.
Not saying its a problem for hc gamers like here on gaf, since we most likely gonna buy it anyways, but for overall health of industry cheapest next gen console being 999$ is defo not a good sign.

Back when they designed it years ago, sure it was probably planned for 2027. But that plan was obviously canceled a while ago. Anyone even casually following this stuff could figure that out. Fall 2028 is my guess.

I bought every Playstation Day 1 since 2007

Never understood the reason to wait for a price drop that might never happen
Every console ever got a price drop. I guess the Switch was the first to not have, then came the others, but still was expected to drop

When ps5 came out the base model was the same price as the ps4 pro

If that repeats the base ps6 will be 900
That's still out of most consumers budgets possibly, but yeah, console gaming is becoming something else. Ps plus prices also are steadily going up and by the time next gen comes along it'll be more expensive I'm sure.

Lockstep accelerationism. This is the beginning of the end of user-side compute. You will own nothing.

For once my fomo and living in Oregon paid off(no sales tax). Got my Pro new for $674 and a 2TB NVMe for it for $88. Just ordered a $450 PS5 1TB Fortnite bundle from Sony as a backup. Says preparing to ship.

PS6 is supposed to have 30GB of RAM, 2TB SSD(?) and be twice as powerful as PS5 Pro? That shit will be $1200, easy.
You spent 1200 dollars on PS5s? Could've got a solid prebuilt PC.

Considering the time of release, and the pattern seen here, Sony should re-release the PS1.

The console is 30 years old, so that would make it around 1700$.

but do gamers really care?

PS is the definition of a hardcore gamers console. there is no alternative as was shown by gamers ignoring what Xbox had to offer.

are we expecting less sold PS now?

If that $600 console is sold at say a $150 loss then that means $500 worth of software to get to break even. There are possibly 10's of millions of users where they would never make that money back.

They have even more reason to make their games exclusive now. $1,000 ps5 pro is already an incredibly tough. For double the price you could have a 5080 PC that does way more than play games. And they are ignoring the part where their games kept flopping over and over on PC for the whole world to see.

Buying a Pro for slightly under a grand just to have games come out exclusively for PS6. I would hate to be that person. It's great and all, but your PC does a better job. I hate this whole scenario. I have a Pro too. I feel sorry for the future consumer they're hiking these prices up for.

I don't get the question....

Hardcore gamers on console ALREADY have had a PS5 for years

No real gamer waits 6 years to buy a console

Next gen is going to be something else. Come on guys it's only one mortgage payment for PS6 2027 including next gen exclusives coming in 2030. Gaming is in a hell of a state.

"PS5 is for consumers who think to themselves 'I will work more hours to buy one'. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else."

Sony is pricing themselves out of their own market.

Anyone who could afford at those prices already purchased one by now, and all those still gaming on a PS4 and were hoping for this generation to get cheaper are just screwed.

This is not how you get people to jump on PS5 now who haven't yet. They are just going to continue to stick with their PS4 consoles.

I stocked up on games like I was preparing for the apocalypse after hearing myrient was shutting down. I don't get as excited about new games as I used to anyway. Maybe the ps6 will change my mind, but for now I'm not thinking about getting a new console. I'll just keep using my 3060 ti, ps4, miyoo mini plus, android phone and switch for as long as they last. Stuff like this just makes me feel more confident about my decision, thanks.

I wonder how 3rd party devs/pubs feel about that price hike since it will directly reduce their future customer base, hopefully not by some 20m+ units if we get ps6 holidays 2027 but i still think it could be 5 to 10m ps5s less sold total worldwide vs if we kept launch prices instead(i dont even dream of substantially lowering the prices like all previous gens, just keeping them the same).

Nothing, nothing will ever beat value that a 60GB Launch PS3 delivered for us back in 06/07.

Gaming is finished. Strap in. Cause this will be far worse than the 80s crash. The industry semi-caused this to itself with AAAA $300m budgets, voting for tyrants and dictators, GaaS shite, AI being rolled out globally etc.

Half the kids on my sons hockey team have 300 dollar hockey sticks..

People need to start recognizing the value of money is not what it was.

Everything is 50% more than it was a few years ago. Cars.. houses.. food.

Electronics are one of the things that was actually coming down in price over the last few decades. Especially when adjusted for inflation. TV's, Computers, Video games.

A PS1 in 1995 was 299USD. Inflation adjusted that is $640

A Sega Saturn was $399... or $850 now.

A Sega CD was equivalent to $690usd today. For a console add on.
It's true. I just recently found out that the prices I'm paying for my BJJ class went up like 50% since I signed up. Which I guess makes sense. I've been at the school for a decade already.

Remember when people here on GAF said RAM price increases wouldn't affect console sales because the manufacturers bought in such bulk and in advanced? Good times. 😂

Ten years of BJ classes should be able to earn yourself a ps5 pro fairly quickly on the street..... :)

Yea with 1 year ps plus when you buy ps6 might as well be 1,000 same for ps5 pro

It wasn't obviously cancelled in any way. Last year Cerny even had "next gen" video about PS6 with AMD.

Do we actually think the video game market will crash? Serious question as well.

You're forgetting a big war that is causing energy prices to skyrocket, which therefore causes manufacturing costs to rise exponentially.
And you can add in a healthy dose of corporate greed to add in some margin on top of all those rising costs.

Maybe they could financially account for the added cost of RAM. But now that everything else is going up? You'd have to be dreaming for them to absorb that cost too.
Don't forget about tarrifs. It's not just one thing but several reasons why the price of EVERYTHING is increasing, even more so for gaming due to the Memory shortage/A.I. push.

It's Insane how one person could cause so much chaos and turmoil around the world.

Y'all act like gaming PC prices haven't skyrocketed. My buddy has a PC that's tripled in price at this point… a couple years old, ridiculous.
The point is that at these prices, fewer people are willing to own multiple platforms.

For example, I have a PC and I might eventually buy a PS6 if it has good exclusives, but for a thousand dollars just to play a few exclusives? No way.

Looking forward to that Nintendo Switch price increase thread soon.
