Sony XDev - Studio that collaborates with external studios (Stella Blade, Death Stranding 2) removed PC ports from its description

I know a load of people left after uncharted 4, and more staff left when Evan Wells left in 2023, but yes theres quite a lot of staff who were then promoted into rolls in 2023 who were on the Last of us 2 development team. I think post uncharted 4 they lost over 70 percent of their staff.

Not accurate. Folks have been parroting the mass exodus from Naughty Dog ever since Jason Schrierer wrote his Kotaku article a few years ago. In that article, he said 70 percent of the design team left after TLOU 2. That was talking about a mere 14 people but folks presented it as if 70 percent of the studio left. So I'd suggest checking your info because you are repeating the same bad data that others have.

Well, their GaaS, like Marathon, and the upcoming Marvel fighter, will be developed for both PC and PS from the get-go, not "ported" to PC. So not really sure what's next for Nixxes.
Nixxes has been doing PC versions of multiplatform games launching on the same date for years.
It's Sony who told them to do "ports" post release after they bought them.

asking AI - "Did 70 percent of naughty dogs staff leave the studio after uncharted 4?"

Yes, reports indicated that roughly 70% of non-lead designers from the Uncharted 4 team left Naughty Dog following the game's 2016 release. This high turnover, linked to intense "crunch" culture and unsustainable work conditions, led to a surge in junior staff, though it did not mean 70% of the entire studio's staff departed.
Reddit +2
Key Details Regarding the Staff Turnover:
  • Targeted Data: According to reports corroborated by Kotaku and former employees, 14 out of 20 non-lead designers from Uncharted 4 departed before or during the development of The Last of Us Part II.
  • Cause - "Crunch" Culture: The departures were largely attributed to severe, sustained overtime (crunch) that made the work environment difficult for employees.
  • Impact on Talent: The exodus led to a significantly less experienced workforce, with many key roles filled by junior staff and contractors.
  • Contextualization: While the 70% figure is often cited regarding the design team, some discussions suggest this was heavily driven by the end of contracts for temporary staff, combined with, but not entirely due to, burnout.
    Reddit +7
Note: While some official comments at the time implied turnover was not abnormal, independent reports and developer accounts highlighted that the attrition rate was exceptionally high.

Seems like you are right in your main point! :)

Good to see PC ports still coming!

Oh....it was Uncharted 4 and not TLOU. So I was not quite accurate myself.

Edit - broke your quote, apologies - I input the same question as google.

Grok does a much better job of adding some clarification. Same input from me :)

No, 70% of Naughty Dog's overall staff did not leave after Uncharted 4 (released in 2016). The figure specifically refers to non-lead designers credited on that game: out of about 20 non-lead designers, 14 (70%) had left the studio by around 2018–2020.

This detail comes primarily from a March 2020 Kotaku report by Jason Schreier on crunch culture at Naughty Dog during The Last of Us Part II's development. It highlighted high turnover linked to intense crunch (long hours, including up to 12+ hour days and weekends) on Uncharted 4 and subsequent projects. Many veterans, including co-director Bruce Straley (who left in 2017 after feeling burnt out), departed, leading to a design team for TLOU Part II that was reportedly ~70% new to the studio. A significant number of artists also left.

Key Context and Clarifications

  • Not the whole studio: Naughty Dog had hundreds of employees (estimates around 200–400+ in that era, growing to 400+ by 2023). The 70% applied narrowly to a subset of the design team, not the entire staff, leads, or other departments. One Reddit discussion even noted it equated to roughly 3–4% of total employees when viewed broadly.
  • Turnover was an issue, but not unprecedented for the studio: Naughty Dog has a history of post-project attrition due to its demanding "crunch" culture (well-documented across The Last of Us, Uncharted 4, and The Lost Legacy). Studio leaders downplayed similar exits earlier (e.g., in 2014 after Amy Hennig and others left during Uncharted 4's troubled development). Industry-wide game dev turnover is often high (~15% or more annually in some reports), but Naughty Dog's was notably elevated in the design area.
  • Causes: Reports pointed to burnout from extreme schedules on Uncharted 4 (described by some as the "worst crunch" they'd experienced), with the studio then relying more on less experienced hires and contractors for the next project—which reportedly worsened the cycle.
  • Later developments: There were additional exits, contract non-renewals (e.g., ~25 contractors, mostly QA, in 2023), and broader PlayStation layoffs affecting Naughty Dog in 2024. However, the studio continued shipping major titles and maintained a large team.

In short, the "70%" claim is a real and often-cited statistic—but it's frequently overstated online as "70% of the studio" or "most staff" leaving en masse right after Uncharted 4. It was a serious (and department-specific) turnover rate tied to working conditions, not a near-total exodus of the entire company. Naughty Dog has faced ongoing criticism for crunch and retention issues over the years.

I love sensational percentages that are used by businesses and news sites.

Yeah, I think I've had this conversation about that 70% number about a dozen times or so the last few years. Schrierer knew what he was doing when he wrote it.

You assume that I don't already have one. I just like to call out shitty anti-consumer practices when I see them.
Ok so when you said: "Sony locking titles behind their $900 console and people are happy lmao it's insane."

1. Are there games exclusive to ps5 pro?

2. Anyone in this thread celebrating the price increase?

1. I'm being hyperbolic, you understand

2. Where did i imply anyone was celebrating the increase?

It is the damnedest thing. Exclusives only benefit the console maker to make their console more appealing. It is anti-consumer since it locks some consumers behind a very expensive paywall. Yet we have most of GAF siding with Sony on this one. Holy fucking Sony shills. I do not see any downside to releasing a Sony console exclusive one year later on PC. Some will double dip, some will get to enjoy the game for the first time. Sony makes money. All I see is win-win with PC ports, yet the amount of bitching that goes on around here you would think that a PC port directly hurts some of you somehow. The only thing I see is Sony fanboys jumping for joy that future titles can only be enjoyed on their console of choice. As a gamer, I want game released on as many platforms as possible. Good games in particular.

Most on Gaf got a PS1 or PS2 as kids. Makes sense there. Just emotions.

You did see how it killed Xbox right?
Many on GAF were even saying they're moving to PC due to PlayStation games being released there.

The cope in this thread is real 😂

All im gonna say is with how expensive consoles are gonna be the ps6 is gonna be in it trouble if it dont have real exclusives

NIXXES:

Netherlands-based studio with engineering teams specialized in high quality PC ports, and art and design teams co-developing games with PlayStation Studios worldwide. Looks like they aren't shifting its just Nixxes will be handling all the PC ports.

XDEV works with second party studio, Jason only said first party single player won't be on PC, so like Wolverine which I doubt and the last PC port from Valkyrie Entertainment was Concord so yeah it makes sense.

God of War 2018 was Jetpack, Ragnarok was Nixxes

wait you mean Xbox who released FH5 on PS5 AND was top of the sales charts for like a month? that Hurt Xbox? mate. Your plastic box is just a vehicle for a corporation to lock you into their subscription services and screw you over with no refunds on digital purchases, inflated prices for games and hardware from half a decade ago.

I have a ps5 pro since launch been a Sony guy for most my life one day you wake up from the shilling and realise it served no one.

wake up.

Yes totally killed Xbox... who were barely releasing ANY games, and no good games, for years during the downturn in console sales lol (and don't forget the absolute PR disaster that was the Xbox One launch)

Meanwhile year or 2 late PC ports for Playstation and their console sales have been doing great.

They're scrambling. It seems like they thought Marathon would right the ship with $ billions coming in. Hundreds of thousands per month doesn't pay for commercial real estate leases in the most expensive cities in the world. They can't keep the lights on.

"we can wait PC port", "how can you stop PC port", "it's no harm"

Sony has data to make strategies. How many leave PlayStation after PC ports or stop buy 1st party game on release? What's the PC ports results: do pc owners create PSN new register, boast sequel sales, buy console hardware; Even Sony don't reveal these numbers, in the Internet you can have it: how the PC revenue consists of and compared to console, for example the Spider man 2 is often 20k sale weekly on console, while PC port (the fastest 1st party port) sell poorly, people argue day one, than what the result of Xbox day one strategy, and use capcom as example to argue when SIE is a platform holder; and the PC revenue mainly come from their Multiple-player games; how PC ports impact their market: port begging, wait port in YouTube/X/Instagram comments

Just check does the hypothesis of Sony's previous PC ports move works: attract PC player to buy consoles? As an entertainment company, the IP management method is more efficient: make their PlayStudios IPs to film, tv shows, anime and e.t.c. Is more consistent and valuable for their ecosystem.

I thought Jason Schrier reported only the single player games from internal studios were to be exclusive. And they would let the 2nd party games they publish, be dependant upon the studios to decide which platforms.

So will Sony make all future China Hero project games PS6 exclusive too? No wonder Pearl Abyss turned them down for Crimson Desert and handled publishing themselves.

Biggest myth in gaming. Xbox one launch killed Xbox. They did PC ports one year after STOPPING REPORTING SALES NUMBERS.
PC ports didn't kill Xbox and you've been repeatedly debunked over this.

Maybe not the only reason but certainly a huge contributor. Xbox One could have been turned around if the person in charge had focused on games, similar to how Sony fixed the PS3 situation.

Ding ding ding! That's the reason; a lack of good games. You'll notice the sales going in a downward spiral started years before the PC ports. Porting subpar games to PC didn't do anything to the Xbox brand.

Daayymn, PCMR and Platform loons just getting to throw pies back and forth at this point. So tell me, should silk song have been a $70 game everywhere??? 🫠

I think people will jump on the fact that it wasn't just the one thing that did permanent damage to xbox, but it was clearly a factor. one of the other major problems with xbox also had a lot of support from these same people. a lot of people were shilling gamepass as "the best deal in gaming" - and good luck trying to explain to them how it was actually damaging the xbox brand a few years ago.

And you are obviously right about that second part too. It's not hard to find posts from people saying they don't see a need to buy the next playstation or wait out a game because it will come to pc eventually. but we all have to act like that has no effect on the long-run health of the console.

Don't worry this is a positive move and we should all celebrate.

Now they can focus on what really has been successful like

Concord
Marathon
Hunters Gathering
Closed bluepoint
Closed Fire sprite
Closed Japan Studios
Re releasing TLOU 1+2
Raising prices of online services
Raising prices of 5 year old hardware
Fairgame$
Deviation Games
Cancelling Days Gone 2
Cancelling what replaced Days Gone 2
Releasing a broken Upscaler
Spider man 2 deaf girl missions
Spider man 2 Mary Jane missions
Marvels Ragnarok Avengers
Naughty Dogs Intergalactic short back and sides

If you are too blind to see how important all these things are you can't be helped and you simply don't understand the industry like us Sony specialists do.

300m is pittance in terms of profit for Sony and they don't care nor do we. I know because every morning before kissing my wife I kiss my spare PS5 PRO good morning and every day smile to myself that you neckbeard nerds on pc can't play my games MINE.

I know you probably have Ps5s already but fuck me as long as you know it's not on PC that will make me happy.

Everybody knows this, even those who pretend otherwise...

They just hoped Sony would follow Xbox in total failure, and now they are angry because the dream is over. It's "back to reality" time

Precisely Sony gave them a taste like a good dealer lol now if they wanna play they gotta pay..or go back to their old product. Why dont they bug Nintendo? Nintendo won't even let them kiss the tip 🤣

Warning to all Steamhuffing Pirates,

The PlayStation Supreme Port (PSP) has revoked the PeeSea Charter. Your deportation has been scheduled.

Now all that's left is to remove the PS games from Steam and Epic and pretend like it never happened.

Iconera is in your future, brother
If it isn't clear, I'm mostly joking here.

Mostly. I actually think it's good for the old competitive attitude to come back. It's not by accident that the times, games and IP that people most love and play to this day still come from that stretch of time when the console wars were most intense. But people are loathe to make that connection.

No big loss really. All the important Sony games have already been ported over like God of War and TLoU. Their future exclusive games are a barren wasteland; at most, you're getting 1-2 exclusives a year. There is Wolverine and Intergalactic coming up which will play like every other Sony 3rd person cinematic action adventure game and not worth buying a PS5, which they have raised the price.

Day 1 on PC any day now....

LOL
Well, regarding PC after their recently released Death Stranding 2, the next XDEV releases on PC will be day one (Marvel Tokon, Kena 2, Convallaria, 4loop, Start Wars KOTOR remake). Same goes with non-XDEV upcoming GaaS: Horizon Hunters Gathering, Horizon Steel Frontiers (also in mobile), Fairgame$, gummy bears (also in mobile)...

And PC ports killed PS5? They were releasing them before PS5 launched.

"Record profits"
"Fastest selling console"
"James Sawyer Ford jizzed in his pants"

etc.

Looks like exclusives have no real impact on this (PS5 has the lowest amount of them anyway). And Sony releasing games 1-2 years later wasn't really hurting anything other than hearts of the most die hard fanboys.

Oh such a shame.
PC gamers will not be able to enjoy such gems as Spiderwoke 3, Ghost of Wokei, Horizon Zero Dawn Lesbian Simulator, Dad of War and Woke Wolverine.
They don't give a shit already, they voted with their wallets hence Sony is pulling back.

Sony clearly dosent want to do day 1 games on pc (only gaas) , the only reason plausible for this is brand devaluation, there's no low sales justification because they simply didnt try any Day 1 game to see what happens, they have sales data from second party games like DS2 to evaluate, its not day 1 games but its not 2 years later also, and they have a lot of data from third party games split (pc vs ps) ...

So all in all no matter what we say, Sony dosent think its good business to do so, and I dont think this is a PS5 decision, it is a PS6 decision, now we are basing our opinions on this godawful gen with lower output and quality and thinking "meh, why?", but in a "what if" scenario were Sony got their shit together and start pumping out good exclusives from their studios and partners like ps3/ps4 era , the scenario can be very different. Specially with a new line of "Pc consoles" flooding the market nextgen.

Ps5 is a well established and successful console, so what ? Now they have to sell ps6 and ps6 handhelds in a very different market than the ps5 launched, so exclusives will matter even more to push the new consoles.
