Stephen Colbert to be replaced by Byron Allen

Don't know him. He funny?
Not especially. Also understand theyre not making allen the host of a new late show theyre taking allen's shows which already exist and moving them into the void left by the late show. I think. I didnt actually read the article.

"But it ceased producing new material for years, instead relying on regular syndication of old tapes. "Comics Unleashed" began producing new episodes again for the 2025-26 season, when it was added to CBS' nightly lineup in the 12:35 a.m. slot."

If he gets good comics this could even be decent.

Late-night could regain traction by leaning into bold, reaction-driven content built for clips on TikTok and YouTube, but for it to actually work, it can't feel tied to any one political side or demographic, it has to hit everyone equally, making people laugh and catch a stray at the same time, so no one feels like it's preaching and everyone feels like it's worth tuning in for.

Damn, that was a run-on. What I meant is: it needs a host like Dave Chappelle, just not literally Dave Chappelle. Not because I don't think he'd pull it of, I just don't think he'd be interested unless the money bag is something ridiculous.

I agree with all this. That being said, I don't know if you've seen Byron Allen, but he ain't Dave Chappelle. Not by quite a measure.

As Norm McDonald once said about his show, "the comics couldn't be more leashed". Dude is just a corny fucker. He owns The Weather Channel, I mean why's he even lookin for work at all?

As a comic, you suck Byron, you always did, but you somehow made it anyway! Chill and enjoy your cash bro.

Again, the late show is ending. Byron Allen will not be hosting the late show. Theyre taking his low-rent, paid programming comedy showcase and moving it from 1235 up to 1135.

Just like his current show that nobody watches, this will just move up its time slot and nobody will watch it. It's just a show where comedians sit in a circle and tell the safest jokes on the planet that probably wouldn't even make a grandmother laugh, but also won't offend anybody.
The main reason for the move is his show is insanely low cost, as opposed to the fortune the network was losing with Colbert. Even if the ratings are a fraction of what the Late Show was getting, they are likely to be profitable with advertisers.

'The watch random low budget nattering when it's late and you're tired and not feeling all that highbrow' concept got et by YouTube.

My interest died with the departure of Craig Ferguson.

I think the late night format needs to be, well, reformatted. Monologue, guest, skit, guest, etc. It can't compete with on demand podcasts and other content. Also, the time slot. Who the hell wants to stay up that late to watch lukewarm at best material WITH commercial breaks? I don't.

Was Colbert the one who started off his late night show trying to break the mold a bit? Like he had the No Man's Sky guy on one of his first episodes to talk about the game. Pretty sure he did a bunch of non-traditional stuff at first but then it faded into the usual format. Then it got too political in a cynical way.

"Famous person is here to promote movie/show/book/album and have a pre-planned conversation" just does not do it for me.

I think the late night show concept is obsolete. What celeb wants to show up for a 5 minute canned response? They can just do that in their insta from their home in Malibu. Running the entire studio, all the cameras, the band, finding that audience, it's a TON of work when some couple can make a funny relationship video in their house and get 10x the views. Shit, half the crap I get in insta these days s just some yahoo putting their "reaction face" in the corner of someone elses video, basically what late night has turned into.

no one watches the show anymore anyway. there are really no good late night shows left. Netflix and lack of anyone thats left being actually entertaining have killed them all off.

Hey youse took a fat cunt from England that everyone over here thought was a cunt and made him a late night superstar that also made him even more of a cunt

Byron doesn't make any sense. He used to do a show called Made in Hollywood was just another press junket interview type show with movie trailer footage.

Somehow he becomes a billionaire.

Replacing Colbert like this feels like 4D chess, I think they were ready to make a big fuss over what happens but now I think they are just perplexed.

I'm so out of touch with this and don't care.

I stopped watching late night TV when Letterman retired.

People have moved on to youtube. Even Conan is there these days doing his podcast. People who watch scheduled shows are more likely to watch streamers like Asmongold or livestreams of Nerdrotic/Critical Drinker.
