According to Plaion, NeoGeo AES+ will come with "discrete" quality of life upgrades, such as low-latency HDMI output, 1080p output, and on-screen BIOS and DIP Switches located on the bottom of the console, allowing for instant switching of language selection, overclocking the hardware, or choosing different display modes.

The console also offers low power consumption and permanently saves gamers' High Score saves for each game.

Ten NeoGeo games will launch alongside the console, with more to follow, as well as a selection of accessories. On day one, it will offer:

  • Metal Slug
  • The King of Fighters 2002
  • Garou: Mark of the Wolves
  • Big Tournament Golf
  • Shock Troopers
  • Samurai Shodown V Special
  • Pulstar
  • Twinkle Star Sprites
  • Magician Lord
  • Over Top
The following accessories will also be available to purchase at launch:

  • NEOGEO AES+ Arcade Stick: "A 1:1 replica of the original classic controller, now updated to offer both wired and wireless capability"
  • NEOGEO AES+ Memory Card: "A 1:1 replica of the original, performing in the exact same fashion as the original but now updated to no longer require a cell battery"
  • NEOGEO AES+ Gamepad: "A 1:1 replica of the original"

This look incredible I am thinking about slapping down the 1000 dollar edition for it I already have a NEO GEO ROM cartridge with hundreds of games on it!

the console is powered by its legacy ASIC chips, re-engineered by modern standards to accurately replicate the original machine's hardware and software. [...] Not emulation, not FPGA approximation, but true console reincarnation etched back into silicon.
"re-engineered" hmm... it'll be interesting to see how accurate everything is.

Holy shit, this is actually REALLY cool. So they're sourcing original chip ISAs and designs into modern ASICs that function 1:1? Was not expecting that at all.

Depending on the price, I will consider picking one up.

"re-engineered" hmm... it'll be interesting to see how accurate everything is.

There are companies that still make modern versions of the Z80 and 8086 CPU under license, 1:1 with the ISA of the old chips too, but able to clock faster and with modern peripheral interface support etc.

I imagine that SNK are doing something similar here, I'd just be interested in knowing what particular companies they are working with on the ASICs. Either way, this is really interesting stuff.

I'd love for SEGA to do something like this with the Saturn in particular, but then again they have "genius" people there who said they don't want to be seen as a "retro game company".

Meanwhile they launched an initiative to revive classic IP years ago because try as SEGA might, that's the side of the company most gamers care a lot more about by a considerable margin no matter how hard it seems SEGA tries running away from it.

Does it support sd slot roms?
Because fucking lol i will not in a million fucking years pay 70 dollar for a single cartridge.

I will CONSUME

(ultimate edition is $1000)

Still have some snk mult-slot* arcade cabinets but my neogeo cd is dead. Will make a nice shelf piece....still wish it was MVS though I could use all my arcade carts.

No thanks, I'd rather keep enjoying my original one....🤷😍

Yeah because original Neo Geo AES systems are easily obtainable and in readily available supply 🙄

If you're already got an AES, great! But if you don't, or you want something that does native HDMI output without costly upscalers, then this could be an option worth considering.

Steam switch plenty of places that have neogeo roms.. all dirt cheap.

I own the AES and NEOGEO CDZ
This is just new overpriced shit.

Some people want actual authentic experiences and are willing to pay a price to get it.

Especially if this can lead to something more in the future.

Go fpga based with SNAC and rgb scart out on a good CRT
Looks the same

This aint the old thing

It's still closer to the old thing than the FPGA you're suggesting. In fact since it's ASIC-based it's as close to the real deal as you can get both legally and realistically considering certain processors (i.e classic 68000 CPUs) are not really manufactured at all anymore by their parent companies (who in some cases don't exist now or have been acquired/merged by/into others).

Dunno why you're so hung up over other people being interested in this or excited about what opportunities it could open up for future reissues of old retro systems.

Original AV output for CRT enthusiasts? Hooooo boy.

I'm seriously tempted to get one just for a cool dedicated Metal Slug and Garou machine.

no emulation and not an FPGA.

I think this is the first retro console that actually fully recreates the original hardware, and doesn't use salvaged parts either

They have flash carts so I would recommend doing that

I am strongly considering this thing and will decide later today.

Nice, I feel a lot more comfortable ordering on amazon than I do from this website I've never heard of before.
Will we be able to buy them at-will after launch? Or is it preorders only and then once they sell out then they're gone? Would like to see reviews before I buy...

Also, does anyone know which of the 10 games actually uses the memory card? KOF, SamSho, and Metal Slug are the ones I'm interested in but is there anything to save beside your high score?

This is so fucking cool. I mean real cartridges too! I hope this is successful and starts a trend with other companies releasing their old consoles.

the flashcarts are bad (the old multi ones with glitches) reason i got the neogeo cdz , AES is insanely expensive.
The only recent flashcart i know is an overpriced terraonion the one for the AES but that creator is a fucking asshole. Just look it up.

Hopefully by av output that includes component since I really don't have space for it in my mini arcade setup as much as I would like to put it there.

$90 games?

mark-cuban-shark.gif

I remember them being 150 bucks back in the day. Funny thing is people will soon be paying that kind of money for AAA games on any platform. We already at 80 bucks……

I never new anybody who owned one but we all used to go Gaga over the screen shots of the games in CVG back in the day. Really was the arcade at home. And no one of us could afford one! 😅😅

Nah, you're right... I was just seeing an opportunity to show off my beloved original Neo Geo 🤭😝😅

Whatever the case, any new product that helps "revive" the development and improvement of Neo Geo games should be celebrated.

PS. I usually prefer to play my retro consoles on a CRT TV, but I also have a scaler that cost me €65 to use my retro consoles on modern screens.

I wonder what AV out cable it uses. They are not showing RGB cables in the accessories section. Do we have any back-shots of the ports?

Need to know more:

What do they mean by "no emulation"? Is this a FPGA?
Does it output RGB over Scart?

EDIT:

Original AV output for CRT enthusiasts
No emulation - Powered by re-engineered ASIC chips

HOLY SHIT!!

This is basically an ORIGINAL Neo Geo Console from SNK with all new parts, additional HDMI output and additional wireless play (in addition to the original wired play).

ASIC isn't any more accurate than FPGA. An FPGA can just be rewired which an ASIC is fixed logic.

The MiSTer NeoGeo core was created to get cycle accurate implementations of the various NeoGeo chips to be able to create new versions. I have to wonder if that was involved in creating the ASIC. As FPGA logic can be used to do the design of an ASIC.
